Cassell and Co., London, 1903,
(Anonymous) The Nation's Pictures. London: Cassell and Company, Ltd, 1903. [Complete in four volumes.] The set containing 193 chromo-photographic process three-colour plates, the plates tipped to stiff olive-grey paper and interleaved with separate printed descriptions for each plate. Pp. viii + 48 plates + [4] (ads); vi + 48 plates + [4] (ads); [4] (col. frontis. and accompanying descriptive leaf) + iv + 48 plates (numbered 2 - 49) + [4] (ads); xvi + 48 plates + [4] (ads). Folio (15" x 11"). With brief biographical notes of the painters in vol. 4, pp. v - xvi. The set would more properly havebeen titled "The Nation's Nineteenth-Century Pictures", as Turner is the e arliest of the 131 artists whose work is reproduced in these volumes. The Pre-Raphaelites, and those influenced by the PRB movement, have a representation in the volumes consistent with their continuing popularity at the timeof publication; and in quality of colour reproduction the plates are the e quals of those in some hastily dished-up modern books, and the better for the exactness of their colour registration. Extremities lightly to moderately worn, fore-corners bumped, some scratching and spotting of cloth, water-marking to rear board of vol. 1. The hinges, although no longer by any meanstight, are still very serviceable as little shaking has been suffered by t he set over time. Cost of shipping will be extra due to the weight of the set. 450.00

"Alphonse Mucha (July 24. 1860 - July 14 1939) was one of the most important decorative artists working in Paris at the turn of the century. His distinctive and original posters and his decorative panels in Le style Mucha became almost synonymous with French Art Nouveau. He became a trusted advisor admirer and designer to the actress Sarah Bernhardt, and was also well known as the creator of familiar advertisements and as a book illustrator. Yet there was much more toMucha's achievement than this. At the height of his career as a decorative artist, he became convinced that art should serve ideas: he became a devot ed contributor to the artistic activities of the interwar Czech government, and he completed a major and controversial cycle of monumental paintings c alled the Slav Epic, as well as portraits and large symbolic paintings. This book, a first full-scale treatment of Mucha's entire oeuvre, includes discussions and reproductions of paintings, posters, decorative panels, pastels, drawings, photographs, jewelry and illustrations from throughout his career. In addition, the authors provide essays on Mucha's Paris years; his association with Sarah Bernhardt; his acquaintance with Sarah Bernhardt, his career after the turn of the century including his years in America, his work as an illustrator, The Slav Epic, his photography, and the reconstruction of his design for the magnificent Fouquet Boutique in Paris". - from the dj. 34 BACNHER, Evan At Ease : Navy Men of World War II. First Edition in dustjacket
Harry N. Abrams, New York , 2004, ISBN:0810948052
BACNHER, Evan. At Ease : Navy Men of World War II. (New York) : Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, (2004). First Printing. Pp (4),5-160. 4to, blue boards, with lighter blue lettering. A large-format photography book. "In the years following World War II, images of comradeship, particularly of men being physically close, largely disappeared from the public record. But, as these stunning photographs attest, ordinary American men in the extraordinary circumstances of World War II were affectionate, winsome, and playful-disarmingly innocent in a time of cataclysmic peril. Led by photography giant Captain Edward J. Steichen, the U.S. Naval Aviation Photographic Unit was organized during the war to record the daily experiences of Navy men all over the world and provide newspapers and magazines with images to promote theAmerican cause. The Unit's photographers, who included Wayne Miller, Horac e Bristol, Victor Jorgensen, and Barrett Gallagher, among others, took thousands of pictures to document the lives of soldiers as they relaxed, trained, went about their lives, prepared for the next battle, and waited. When the tension of battle was over or yet to come, these photographers captured the moments when troops left behind their responsibilities as men for a little while and became boys again: roughhousing, wrestling, lounging, and showing off. This book brings together a selection of more than 150 of those [black & white] photographs, culled from the Still Pictures Branch of the National Archives, including many that have never before been published. While World War II imagery tends to be dominated by combat photography and monumental depictions of mechanized weaponry, these photographs offer a rare, intimate look at the Navy men themselves." - from the dj. 35 BACNHER, Evan. Men of WWII : Fighting Men at Ease. First Edition in dustjacket

BACNHER, Evan. Men of WWII : Fighting Men at Ease. (New York) : Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, (2007). First Printing. Pp (4),5-160. 4to, blue boards, with lighter blue lettering. A large-format photography book. "During the Second World War, the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit vividly capturedthe ordinary lives of soldiers during extraordinary circumstances, produci ng thousands of professional-quality photographs. These photographs reveal the human side of the war: the enlisted men are at turns playful, bored, relaxed, or on edge. In this follow-up to the revelatory 'At Ease', Evan Bachner once again culls the best images from the National Archives to illuminate these men at war. As in 'At Ease', the high level of artistry and composition in the photos is striking, due to the experience and craft of the menbehind the camera. The Naval Aviation Photographic Unit, formed to provide images for patriotic publications, was led by Edward Steichen, a master ph otographer. His team included such photography luminaries as Horace Bristol, Wayne Miller, Charles Fenno Jacobs, and Victor Jorgensen. In addition, this volume includes photographs from the Marine's, Army Air Corps, and Army collections, which have a style that is less polished but more intimate andcompelling. This book, which inclucldes many never-before- published image s, captures the servicemen in their daily routines—living in a war, but so often at rest or at play. Featuring more than 150 [black & white] photographs, from the Still Pictures branch of the National Archives, 'Men of WWII' focuses on the quieter and more personal side of the war. Rather than highlighting violent, iconic war imagery, these photographs bring a sense of humanity to the conflict that has shaped the modern world" - from the dj.
