"While there is an interesting continuation of many of the themes and techniques of Patrick Anderson's earlier work, the poetry in this volume represents significant new developments. Some of the poems have a formal elegance of structure not too common in Canadian poetry, others are moremusical and simple than one might have expected, while still others have a strong sensuous lyricism. The surface ease one notices on first reading mo st of the poems is deceptive: there are levels of meaning, paradoxes, and an underlying sense of conflict that makes this collectiong stimulating reading. In the world of Patrick Anderson's imagination there is not dividing waste of seas. One may step from the British coastlines of the poet's early years to a Canadian shore and Canadian moods no less vividly apprehended. It was certainly as a Canadian poet that Anderson was received and discussedon this continent in the forties, , and it is as a Canadian on leave of ab sence that he has been since regarded. Rights formerly guaranteed by our 'welfare state' are disappearing. Social spending has been cut drastically in an attempt to combat recession, globalization and restructuring, and the deficit. The decline of the welfare state poses special risks for women. The policies, benefits, and services of the welfare state are directly linked to women's basic freedoms. The welfare state employs women to deliver services such as childcare, home-help, nursing, and social work. In turn, these services have meant that women can enter the paid labour force, provide for dependants, and leave abusive relationships. Access to political resources have helped women to form solidarities, alliances, and organizations. In Women and the Canadian Welfare State, scholars from environmental studies, law, social work, sociology, and economics explore the changing relationship between women and the welfare state. They examine the transformation of the welfare state and itsimplications for women; key issues in welfare state debates such as social rights, family and dependency, and gender-neutral programs and inequality; women's work and the state; and the role of women as agents of change.Wome n and the Canadian Welfare State explains not only how women are affected by changes in policy and programming, but how they can take an active role in shaping these changes. It bridges an important gap for scholars and students who are interested in gender, public policy, and the welfare state." Very good. 40.00

April 23, 1697, Staffordshire - d.June 6, 1762, Moor Park, Hertfordshire). "The career of Admiral Lord Anson heralded the most glorious epoch in the history of the Royal Navy. He was the first of the great eighteenth century admirals, preceding Rodney, Howe,St. Vincent and finally Nelson, whose mighty victory at Trafalgar set the seal on a process which was based not only on those qualities of seamanship, command and heroism which they all, without exception, possessed, but equally important, on the reorganization of the navy itself. [...] Anson was asailor in the tradition of Drake and Hawkins and his early life reads like the saga of a successful buccaneer. When in 1740 he was sent to harry the Spanish American possessions, he achieved not only this specific objective, but came home, after an epic voyage of circumnavigation involving terrible losses and setbakcs surmounted through leadership and resolve, with the ri chest prize cargo in history. [...] Later he was appointed to the Admiralty, where he served, with only a short break, from 1745 until his death in 1762, eventually becoming First Lord. In this capacity he introduced many reforms, salvaging the Navy from its moribund state and earning for himself the title 'Father of the Navy'." - from the dustjacket.
