206 DURRELL, Gerald. THOMPSON, Ralph. Drunken Forest. First Edition in dustjacket.
Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1956,
DURRELL, Gerald. The Drunken Forest. With illustrations by Ralph Thompson. London : Rupert Hart-Davis, 1956. First Edition. Pp. (6), 7-238, (2). 8vo, red cloth with silver spine titles. "Once again Mr. Durrell is in quest of the odder of the small birds and animals to be found in the Argentinian pampas and the little-explored Chaco territory of Paraguay. The specimens he collects, ranging from the world's smallest owl to some of its deadliest snakes (including a singularly unaggresive anaconda) are quite as bizarre, as amusing, endearing and cantankerously individual as anything that walked, crept or flew through the enchanting pages of Three Singles to Adventure or The Bafut Beagles. For good measure he throws in a remarkable collection ofhuman beings, including Paula who combines the role of domestic servant wi th that of headmistress of the local brothel, discharging both functions with a high tyrannical temper; in addition he depicts some of the most splendid landscape in the world. The world itself intrudes and somewhat spoils his climax by producing a local revolution which makes it necessary for him to release some of his pets in order to get himself and his wife back to Buenos Aires with the rest, in as frail an aeroplane as was ever tied togetherwith bits of twine, conducted by a Polish pilot who cannot take aviation s eriously. The refusal of the animals to depart when given their liberty mayprove as disconcerting to the sentimentalist as it proved to Mr. Durrell." -- from dust jacket. Very good in chipped with some loss, unclipped dust j acket. 30.00
