CARTER, Dyson. Fatherless Sons. A novel. Toronto: Progress Books, (July) 1955. First Canadian Edition. Special Advance Edition. Pp. (6),7-480. 8vo, decorated white cloth, red lettering to spine. Laugher, p. 93, Watters p.259."This book is one of a Special Advance Edition, of which only 320 copies h ave been printed." Herbert Dyson Carter, b. February 2, 1910, Saint John, NB. "'Fatherless Sons' was the first of his serious fictions to use an explicitly Canadian setting, and attempted to convey the political and personal experience of working-class Canadians in the early years of the Cold War. As the verbal echo in its title suggests, 'Fatherless Sons' may have been partly inspired by the Communist reaction against Hugh MacLennan's popular novel 'Each Man's Son' (1951). A reviewer in the Canadian Tribune complained that MacLennan ignored the poverty and strife-ridden labour conditions of industrial Cape Breton to concentrate on a sentimental and pseudopsychological scrutiny of the main character, 'Fatherless Sons', by contrast, portraysworking-class struggles for survival against capitalist exploitation and m ilitarism." - from James Doyle's article "Science, Literature and Revolution: The Life and Writings of Dyson Carter", pp. 19-20, from Left History, Vol. 5, No. 2. "You'll read in this book the story of a headstrong young miner, and the courageous woman whose love he never lost. This man's family, for genearations, has been shadowed by a terrible curse... the sons have never known their fathers. Came the day when Dave Nelson returned from war, to seek his love again, resolved to defy his family's fate. But life plunged him and his beloved into one of the strangest, most pathetic and tormenting situations that ever confronted two loves. 'Fatherless Sons' takes you farrbeyond one family and one town. It sweeps you across our magnificent count ry, into the lives of a host of Canadians, youthful and aged, the brave andthe defeated." - from the dustjacket. Small nick mid-spine (affecting "RT" in Carter's last name), a couple of small creases and nicks to first two l eaves, else a very good copy in lightly nicked, faintly spine-sunned, unclipped dustjacket. "The stories forming the major part of this book are taken from the series "Highways andByways" which Frank Hatheway published in the Saint John Globe sixty years ago. That series consisted of accounts of his holiday wanderings, mostly o n foot, in the lower Saint John and Kennebecasis river valleys, the Gaspé and Cape Breton. He described, often in minute detail and beautiful prose, the flora and scenery he encountered, none of which is of much interest to the general reader today [??]. Sometimes he retold folklore and local tales which had been passed on to him dring his travels. These I have abstracted, edited, and, in a few cases, where improvement seemed possible, rewritten.
