201 GRANT, James MacKay. MacKENZIE, A.A., foreword]. Merchant of Marshy Hope.
Lancelot, Hantsport, 1977, ISBN:0889990697
GRANT, James MacKay. The Merchant of Marshy Hope. [Foreword by A.A. Mackenzie]. (Hantsport, NS: Lancelot Press, 1977). Pp 112. 8vo, card covers, blackand blue lettering to front cover, black lettering to spine. Front cover a dds: "A humorous and affectionate look at a most unusual merchant." "Almostas a labor of love, the Author has chosen, from a stock of youthful impres sions recollected in maturity, to describe the latter years of a man who was at different periods in his life a miner, soldier, rural handyman, and country merchant. His character sketch is vivid, compassionate, and gently humorous. From its pages George Sweetman -- dead these thirty-odd years -- emerges as a likeable, cantakerous, militantly independent figure, with a fondness for good cheer, storytelling and travelling the woods. His place of abode, a hamnlet in Nova Scotia's Pictou County, was passing from the grim depression of the 1930's into the stormy years of the Hitler war. A storekeeper in his last decade of life, George was not a successful businesman. Fewrural or outport merchants were successful in those years, unless they dea lt in lumber, fish or rum as supplements to the credit-ridden business of purveying groceries and general merchandise to neighbors perennially short of cash." - from the foreword. Name to front cover, else very good. Due to its small size, shipping costs should be cheaper than quoted. 15.00
