"What lay behind Charles de Gaulle's 'Vive le Québec libre!' speech in Montreal on 24 July 1967; Philippe Rossilon's activities in New Brunswick, Belgium and Africa; and the sinking of Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrir in New Zealand in 1985? J.F. Bosher argues that the motivation behind all these incidents was France's imperial ambition. He contends that behind the screen of teh harmless fraternizing of the international francophonie, French nationalists have been at work to stimulate French revolutionary nationalism in Quebec and elsewhere. He argues that the Gaullist ideology behind these attempts rests on a set of mythsabout past events, age-old resentment of the English-speaking nations, and a deep-rooted belief in the superiority of France, its language, and its c ulture." - from the dj. 207 BOURASSA, Henri Le Projet de Loi Navale : Sa nature, ses Conséquences: Discours prononcé auMonument National le 20 Janvier 1910
Devoir, 1910,
BOURASSA, Henri. Le Projet de Loi Navale: Sa nature, ses Conséquences: Discours prononcé au Monument National le 20 Janvier 1910. (N.p.): Devoir, 1910. Pp 37. 8vo, stapled printed wraps. An important document in the history of Canadian naval development. The text is a transcription of a speech givenby Bourassa simultaneous with Parliamentary debate on the country's first Naval Service Act, outlining his opposition to the measure with characteristic drive and eloquence. After a detailed refutation of the arguments of parliamentarians and editorialists clamoring for a Navy, and a closely-reasoned presentation of his own position, Bourassa makes his appeal to the people of Canada: "Cette assemblée déclare que le parlement n'a pas le droit d'engager le Canada dans une politique navale entièrement nouvelle sans avoir au préalable obtenu le consentement du peuple. En conséquence, cette assemblée demande a la Chambre des Communes et au Sénat de différer l'adoption duprojet de loi déposé le 12 janvier 1910 jusqu'à ce que le peuple ait manif esté sa volonté par un plébiscite." It was an approach he had taken earlier, with regards to the South African war; as in that instance, it failed. Very good. 70.00

Foreword by Donald Savoie.

"In 1969 the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism recommended bilingual districts as part of its federal language policy. Daniel Bourgeois traces the complex path that led to the 1976 demise, following pressure from the Treasury Board Secretariat, of the plan to create bilingual districts. Bourgeois argues for the reconsideration of this previously discarded 'cornerstone' of federal language policy, providing a nuanced analysis of social identity, sociolinguistic policies, nationalism, and minority rights and services. 'Canadian Bilingual Districts' also considers the Royal Commission's approach in this context of contemporary developments." - from the dustjacket.

What they discover is a rich pageant of folly and foliage, compost and courage, passion and perennials. Armed with a tape recorder and a camera, Elspeth and Judy travel from the newly planted lighthouse garden at Point Atkinson, British Columbia to the long-vanished survival garden at Gape Spear, Newfoundland. In between, they are entertained by more than eighty "ordiinary" gardeners who welcome them into private oases of greenery and imagination. They discover a vegetable plot on a boat and an alpine rockery in the mountains; a rose specialist on the prairies and a banana grower on a small island; a balcony arboretum in the and a flower patch in the forest. Above all, they discover the essential element in a real gardeen: the true gardener. Here are women, men and children from a multitude of backgrounds who garden for survival, for therapy, for community, for competition, for amusement, for solitude, for beauty and, simply, tor love of life.
