"Charles Mair was an ardent Canadian patriot in two spheres, literary and historical, but since his death his historical endeavours gave received greater attention and his literary importance diminished. However, as Norman Shrive observes in his introduction, Mair gave Canada a work which was regarded in 1868 as its first significant collection of verse and which is an ideal illustration of the strugle of post-Confederation letters for survival and recognition. A founding member of the Canada First movement, Mair went to the Red River settlemetn as paymaster to a road-building party and promtly became embroiled in the conflict with Riel and the Metis. It was at this time, ironically, that he was extolling national unity in his poetry. [...] This volume includes 'Dreamland and Other Poems' and most of the ill-fated collection of 1901, 'Tecumseh: A Drama and Canadian Poems'. The latter included many revisions of the original 'Dreamland' poems, but these revisions have been listed in an appendix rather than the whole volume reprinted." -from the dustjacket. Watters p. 344, Spdoni & Donnelly 1485. John Marlyn (b. April 2, 1912 – d. November 16, 2005). "Patience, honesty and humility are all very well, but they will not get you far in life—not if life has begun among ineffectual foreigners coopea up in their past and thieir poverty at the wrong end of town. So thought Sandor Hunyadi, the son of Hungarian immigrants. At twelve, he was torn between affection and contempt fora father who earned a meagre living for the family, ignored the squalor of their surroundings, and nourished his soul on philosophy. What Sandor want ed was not philosophy but success. At fourteen he had gained his toe-hold as a man of business. Winnipeg in the 1920's, as Sandor saw it, was a city in wmich the successful people were the business men and, above all, "the English." So far had he come, by the middle of the decade, that identification with these real Canadians was no longer a childish dream. He acquired at about that time a suitable name; he married; he moved to a better district;he began to associate, at last, with the hard-headed, soft-spoken opportun ists whose universe revolved around the stock market. And that is where Sandor was when the light went out and the financial heavens fell in 1929." (Abnstract).
