At the same time he was unwilling to fetter himself with the prepar ation of a regular bulletin. He finally adopted a record book, to be added to, a few pages at a time, at irregular intervals and to be called the Beinn Bhreagh Recorder. Initially, seven copies, marked A, B, C, etc., would betyped and distributed on loan to heads of departments of the estate, inclu ding the Laboratory and aerodrome company. All copies would remain Dr. Bell's property. The first pages of Volume I were dated 24 July 1909." - J.H. Parkin, Bell and Baldwin (1964), pp.279-280. "In July 1909, inspired by the recently discontinued Aerial Experiment Association Bulletin, Bell began issuing the Beinn Bhreagh Recorder, part research bulletin, part house organ, part news magazine, part court circular. As the years passed, the Recorder also incorporated more and more biographical material, Bell family history , and reprints of Bell's earlier writings. First issued in seven typed copies for the information of Baldwin and McCurdy during their absence on airplane trials, the Recorder came to be mimeographed in twenty copies for friends, family, the Volta Bureau, and the Smithsonian. Eventually the file lengthened to twenty-five bound volumes of four or five hundred pages each." - Robert V. Bruce, Bell (1973), p.480. A volume in the Images of our Past series.

"Breathtaking views of sky, sea, and land, the incredible saltwater Bras d'Or Lakes, and easy access to the Cabot Trail draw thousands to Baddeck every year. This magical area of Nova Scotia has enchanted visitors and resident s alike since the early settlements of the Mi'kmaq. From the moment inventor Alexander Graham Bell and his wife, Mabel, built their first home in Baddeck in 1889, the town has been well-known for its role in invention and creativity. With the Bells' arrival, Baddeck was flooded with inventors, scientists, and artists eager to create. Soon enough, the budding village garnered international attention. In February 1909, people flocked to Baddeck Bay to witness the momentous flight of the Silver Dart, which brought aviation to Canada with the country's first powered flight. During this time, Mabel Bell sought out equal rights for women, and established what became the longest-running women's club in Canada." - from the rear cover.

73 BIGGINS, John Two-Headed Eagle. First American Edition in dustjacket
St. Martin's Press, New York , 1996, ISBN:0312147511
BIGGINS, John. The Two-Headed Eagle. A novel. New York : St. Martin's Press, (October, 1996). First American Printing. Pp. (7),viii-ix,(5),1-367,(3). Illustrated with maps. 8vo, blue boards, silver lettering to spine. "Few historical novelists have ever embarked on a project as challenging as John Biggins's series of World War I adventure novels. And few have received sucheager accolades: Reviewers from The New York Times to Publishers Weekly ha ve praised this exciting writer as a vital and worthy successor to the mantles of Patrick O'Brian and C. S. Forester. "The Two-Headed Eagle is the breakout book in Biggins's series: a story of five months of hair-raising adventure on the Italian front in which young Otto Prohaska, the hero of A Sailor of Austria and The Emperor's Coloured Coat, entrusts his life to the nascent, unreliable, and terrifying Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian FlyingService. It is the summer of 1916, and Otto, joined by his self-willed aer ial chauffeur Sergeant-Pilot Toth, entrusts his life to a succession of flimsy biplanes in the sky above war-torn Alpine battlefields. On the ground, the rickety Habsburg empire has begun its final slide to disaster. And in the air is the unmistakable sense that history, poignant and ironic and always surprising, is erupting all around them. "Written with craft, style, andan astonishing breadth of emotion, The Two-Headed Eagle is the continuatio n of a remarkable series." from the dj.
