62 ANGLO, Sydney, (ed.) Damned Art : Essays in the Literature of Witchcraft. First Edition in dustjacket
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1977, ISBN:0710085893
ANGLO, Sydney, (ed.). The Damned Art : Essays in the Literature of Witchcraft. London : Routledge & Kegan Paul, (1977). First Edition. Pp (4),v-viii,1-258,(2). Index. 8vo, black cloth, silver lettering to spine. "Learned demonological literature, though frequently cited, is little read; and facile generalisation about such material has preceded the detailed study of individual texts. The Damned Art seeks to reverse this process. Only indirectly concerned with the unanswerable problems of popular mentality which have largely occupied recent students of medieval and renaissance witch persecution, the book approaches witchcraft and demonology through literary records. The works discussed deal not with the inchoate prejudices of the multitude but rather with contemporary theories propounded by those who sought either to justify, or to refute, persecution. Eight scholars of differing interests, and with different approaches to their subject, examine a selection of important, representative witchcraft texts - published in England, France, Germany, Italy and America - setting them within their intellectual context, and analysing both their style and argument. Thus not only the emotionalis m, but also the methodology of witchcraft belief is set before the modern reader; and the latter is, perhaps, even more harrowing than the former." (from he dj). Contents : 1. Evident authority and authoritative evidence : The malleus maleficarum (by Sydney Anglo). 2. Witchcraft and magic in Renaissance Italy : Gianfrancesco Pico and his Strix (by Peter Burke). 3. Johann Weyer's De praestigiis daemonum : unsystematic psychopathology (by Christopher Baxter). 4. Jean Bodin's De la demonomanie des sorciers : the logic of persecution (by Christopher Baxter). 5. Reginald Scot's Discoverie of witchcraft : scepticism and Sadduceeism (by Sydney Anglo). 6. A Tudor anthropologist : George Gifford's Discourse and dialogue (by Alan Macfarlane). 7. KingJames's Daemonologie : witchcraft and kingship (by Stuart Clark). 8. Pierr e de Lancre's Tableau de l'inconstance des mauvais anges et demons : the sabbat sensationalised (by Margaret M. McGown). 9. 64 Anonymous) Nation's Pictures
Cassell and Co., London, 1903,
(Anonymous) The Nation's Pictures. London: Cassell and Company, Ltd, 1903. [Complete in four volumes.] The set containing 193 chromo-photographic process three-colour plates, the plates tipped to stiff olive-grey paper and interleaved with separate printed descriptions for each plate. Pp. viii + 48 plates + [4] (ads); vi + 48 plates + [4] (ads); [4] (col. frontis. and accompanying descriptive leaf) + iv + 48 plates (numbered 2 - 49) + [4] (ads); xvi + 48 plates + [4] (ads). Folio (15" x 11"). With brief biographical notes of the painters in vol. 4, pp. v - xvi. The set would more properly havebeen titled "The Nation's Nineteenth-Century Pictures", as Turner is the e arliest of the 131 artists whose work is reproduced in these volumes. The Pre-Raphaelites, and those influenced by the PRB movement, have a representation in the volumes consistent with their continuing popularity at the timeof publication; and in quality of colour reproduction the plates are the e quals of those in some hastily dished-up modern books, and the better for the exactness of their colour registration. Extremities lightly to moderately worn, fore-corners bumped, some scratching and spotting of cloth, water-marking to rear board of vol. 1. The hinges, although no longer by any meanstight, are still very serviceable as little shaking has been suffered by t he set over time. Cost of shipping will be extra due to the weight of the set. 450.00
