Illustrated. 8vo, blue clo th with gilt lettering to spine. "It was not glamorous, or beautiful, but for downed airmen adrift in the seas around the United Kingdom during the Second World War, the sight and sound of the Walrus seaplane were as preciousas the gift of life itself. As they were hoisted aboard and flown back to dry land, they knew that the 'Shagbat' and its crew had enabled them to live and fight another day. As the RAF and USAAF increasingly took the fight to the enemy, ranging far and wide over the Low Countries, France, and Germany itself, the need for an effective air-sea rescue force became paramount.[...] From 1941 to 1945, the men and machines of the UK-based Walrus ASR s quadrons rescued or helped to rescue more than 1,300 downed airmen, many ofwhom would otherwise have perished in the icy cold waters. The courage of the men who came to their rescue, often in atrocious weather and under a hail of enemy fire, and always in the race against time, were of the highest order." - from the dj. GALLICO, Paul. The Secret Front. Mew York : Alfred A. Knopf, 1940. First Edition. Pp (16),3-381,(5). 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine, top edge dyed blue. "He was an obscure copy-reader on a great metropolitan newspaper who let his romantic dreams run away with him, and as a result became invlved in some of the most bizarre and hair-raising experiences you've ever read about. Thousands of men and women are already Holliday fans, delighting in each of his romantic adventures. In this novel they will find him at his best, and they will find that his adventures have never been more strange, more exciting—yet they are right out of today's headlines. He is now an established correspondent on the fighting fronts of Europe. He witnesses the terrific drive of Germany's armed might, and sees the jealous bickerings and violence of those high in the Nazi leadership. Aboard a German submarine, he takes part in the daring invasion of a British naval base. He becomesinvolved in a dark mystery at the center of Nazi power—a mystery whose sol ution would go far to solving the problems of nations. Intrigue and danger follow him everywhere, and two women complicate his life; one an English girl who loves Hitler, the other a charming America whose life is threatened. Here indeed is a marvellous tale of modern derring-do, fast, dramatic, col orful. It you are among the unfortunate ones who are not yet acquainted with Hiram Holliday, you had better come aboard—but hold fast, because Gallicoobeys no speed laws." (from the dj). "At ten o ciock on me mgm ot January 14, 1942, a German U-boat, running on the surface, approached the opening to New York Harbor's Lower Bay. Althouqh the United States and Germany had been at war for more than a month, New York's skyline was not blacked out. On the contrary, it was so brilliantly lit that the crewmen on U- 123's conning tower, eager for their first glimpse of the world's largest city, could only gape in astonishment at the sight. Nor was there any U.S. Navy response to their presence - even though U-123 had sunk two ships on its way over from France, one the night before off Long Island; even though twenty-five U.S. destroyers were in position to defend the coast and its shipping; and even thouqh British cryptanalysts. having broken the German naval cipher, had tracked this U-boat and four others to American shores and had provided their day-by day positions and courses to U.S. Navy headquarters in Washington.

Operation Drumbeat was the code name of this first German assault against the United States in World War II. Author Michael Gannon focuses on U-123, the most successful U-boat in the assault torce, and on her commander, Reinhard Hardegen, who sank nineteen ships on two American patrols and twice received Germany's hiahest decoration, the Knight's Cross. Gannon's history includes the other Drumbeat U-boats, two of which operated in Canadian waters. " - from the dj.
