"The booming trans-Atlantic cotton trade created the need to cut a canal that would carry Southern cotton directly from the Ocean to Manchester's textile mill door. It cost $75,000,000, employed 17,000 men, occupied 173 locomotives hauling 6,300 wagons over 228 miles of temporary ltrack laid specially for the purpose. The canal was 365 feet wide and 120 feet deep, consideraably larger than the Suez Canal. On its completion it enabled the ocean-going vessels of the day to to travel 36 miles inland." - from the dust jacket.
