Law 0234.

"German submarines penetrated Canadian waters during the Second World War to within 172 miles of Quebec City They sank ships, landed spies, laid mines, built an automatic weather station, undertook forays to rescue escaped German POWs, and forced the Canadian government to close the St Lawrence River and Gulf to Allied shipping.

The U-boats constituted a serious threat to North American security and a major challenge to coastal and convoy defence. The deployment of minesweepers and escorts, the placement of harbour defences, and the planning of convoy routes were triggered by genuine fears that Halifax, St John's, and inland ports and convoys on the St Lawrence might be blockaded or even attacked by one of these most sinister of maritime weapons. German successes reveal the extent of Canada's unpreparedness.

Hadley focuses on the exploits of the U-boats and the Canadian response, setting them within the broad context of German and Canadian activity in the Battle of the Atlantic. He examines the impact of U-boat sorties on Canadian federal politics. His book is based on thorough analysis of U-boat War Diaries; the War Diaries of Admiral Dönitz and the German Naval War Office; the operational records of the Royal Canadian Navy and Air Force and those of the Royal Navy's Operational Intelligence Centre; and the espionage files of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

He covers all attacks on Allied warships and merchantmen in Canadian inshore waters and the contiguous Northwest Atlantic combat zone. The human dimensions in this story of ships and strategies emerge in excerpts from unpublished memoirs and wartime German and Canadian newspapers, and especially from correspondence and interviews with survivors from both sides." - from the dj.

HADLEY, Michael L. and Roger SARTY. Tin-Pots and Pirate Ships: Canadian Naval Forces and German Sea Raiders 1880-1918. Montreal / Kingston : McGill-Queen's University Press, (1991). First Edition. Pp [i]-viii,[1]-391,(1),+ 16pp plates & maps. Index. 8vo, red cloth, silver lettering to spine. "Micha el Hadley and Roger Sarty shed new light on Canadian and German history -- and on Canada's naval defences in particular -- by exploring the naval operations and politics of both nations between 1880 and 1918. Beginning with Canada's feeling of "Splendid Isolation" and Germany's imperial ambitions against North America, the authors' intriguing and graphic account takes us from the early turmoil of federal politics in Canada to the conflict of the Great War and the eventual mothballing of the Canadian fleet. Having conducted an exhaustive study of Canadian, German, American, and British sources -- many of which have not been examined before -- Hadley and Sarty evaluatesuch major issues as policies and practice; intelligence schemes and spy s cares; naval bills and the Dreadnought crisis; U-boats, commercial submarines, undersea cruisers, and surface raiders; and coastal patrols and convoy protection. Many factors that were believed to have been responsible for shaping -- and misshaping -- the Canadian Navy of 1939-45 are shown to have been in play during the First World War. Tin-Pots and Pirate Ships reveals the Canadian tradition of building a fleet only when needed, dismantling it once the conflict is over, and ultimately accepting terms dictated by alliance partners." - from the dj. Her Majesty's Stationery Office HMSO, London , 1994, ISBN:0117726036
(HESSLER, Gunter, Fregattenkapitan). German Naval History ; The U-Boat War in the Atlantic 1939-1945. Facsimile Edition with Introduction by Lieutenant Commander Andrew J. Withers. London : Her Majesty's Stationery Office, (1989). Pp [i]-x,1-119,(1),[i]-xii, 1-126,[i]-x,1-151, (3),+ separate wallet containing 5 large folding sheets incorporating diagrams 1-32 from the original volumes. 4to, navy cloth, gilt lettering to spine, text volume and wallet in a pictorial paper covered slipcase. "After the end of the Second World War, Fregattenkapitan Gunter Hessler (a son-in-law of Donitz) was given free access to the war diaries and other primary sources of the German Navyto write a history and analysis of the German U-Boat offensive in the Atla ntic. It covered many aspects, such as general strategy, signals intelligence, tactics and weapons, adopting a largely German viewpoint. It also investigated Allied countermeasures and the response of the U-Boat Command. Written at the request of the Admiralty, the three-volume work was classified material, never available to the general public. This facsimile edition of the volumes, with a fresh introduction by Lt Cdr Andrew Withers, is a valuable addition to the published history of the war, and contains information available nowhere else. Corrections and explanations have been added to the original text - incidents puzzling Hessler can be better understood, for example, now that we have the full story of British Intelligence Work in deciphering German Signals. For students of military, naval or intelligence history The U-Boat War in the Atlantic is a unique account, not least because the many charts and diagrams allow the record of each U-Boat to be traced, including its deployment on any particular day." - from the slipcase. Werner Hirschmann (b. in March 1923 in Dusseldorf, Germany).

"As a boy growing up in Germany, Werner Hirschmann was fascinated with stories of naval heroes. built ship models, and dreamed of going to sea. In 1940, he was accepted as an officer cadet in the Kriegsmarine, the German navy, and after years of rigorous training, became an engineer officer in the elite U-Boot-Waffe or submarine service.

Using his wartime diaries and his remarkable photograph albums, as well as historical documents, Werner Hirschmann recounts the many interesting episodes in his naval career, including serving on a destroyer that escorted Bismarck on her last operation, U-boat operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, being besieged by the Americans at the U-boat base at Lorient in France, and his last patrol to North America in 1945, on which his submarine, U-190, sank HMCS Esquimalt, the last Canadian warship to be lost during the war.

In Another Place, Another Time, Hirschmann provides a unique view of the day-to-day life of a U-boat officer who, like young men on both sides, did his best to enjoy life while trying to do his duty. An epilogue describes his postwar life as a prisoner-of-war in Canada and Britain and his subsequent move to Canada, where he pursued a successful career and eventually became an honorary member of the veterans' association of HMCS Esquimalt.

A key feature for the many readers interested in Second World War submarines is the technical section that provides a detailed pictorial tour of the Type IX/C40 U-boat, including many previously unpublished photographs discovered in Canadian archives." - from the dj.
