Map. 8vo, blue cloth. "It wasa snowy, stormy nigth, that February 23, 1918, when the sturdy S.S. Floriz el steamed out of St. John's harbor, bound for Halifax and New York. Captain William Martin, a cautious and competent skipper, encountered sish ice and heavy winds as he headed down the treacherous Newfoundland coast. But these circumstances did not account for the ship's slow speed. Just before dawn, over nine hours after leaving port, Captain Martin ran his ship full steam onto the rocks just north of Cape Race. A man could have walked the forty miles in the same time. But that was only the beginning of a long and gruelling drama. As the ship slowly disintegrated, the passengers and crew desperately tried to save themselves. Men, women and children were washed overboard, or killed from exposure, or fatally trapped below deck. From the shore helpless fishermen watched in horror. Twenty-seven hours after striking the reef the daring rescue took place. Of the 138 on board, seventeen passengers and twenty-seven crew members survived." - from the dust jacket. Vg in nicked dj. 30.00

88 BROWN, Cassie Writing the Sea. First Edition
Flanker Press, St. John's, NF, 2005, ISBN:1894463749
BROWN, Cassie. Writing the Sea. St. John's, NL : Flanker Press Ltd., 2005. First Printing. Pp. (8),ix-x,1-163,(3). Illustrated with 37 b&w photos in the text. 8vo, Brian Bursey photo-illustrated blue cardcovers. A collection of Brown's pieces on life in Newfoundland and of disasters around the island province's perilous coasts. Includes numerous articles on the sinking of the Florizel, as well as the Caribou disaster, the mutiny on the Diana, theloss of the Hope and the Empress of Scotland, and the rescue of the crew a board the Leicester. "Cassie Brown is one of Canada's best-known writers ofsea tragedies. Her three classic tales were published by Doubleday Canada in the 1970s. However, before this, she was prolific as a journalist, scriptwriter, and publisher of her own monthly magazine. Writing the Sea includes an autobiographical essay on Ms. Brown's formative years in a remote coastal Newfoundland village. In "Rose Blanche and Me" she describes her hometown and the adventures that influenced the writings in her adult life. Also included in this volume are a dozen stories she wrote as a journalist for The Daily News, including the seminal story she was assigned to write, "Death March," to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the most famous sealing disaster in Canada's history. This tragic tale motivated her to leave the security of a salaried job as a journalist and to conduct further research. This resulted in the classic book Death on the Ice. Other sea stories describe the sinking of the SS Caribou by enemy action in World War II, the wreck of the SS Florizel, mutiny on the SS Diana, and "Tragedy at St. Jacques Island." Upon publication of her three non-fiction bestsellers in the 1970s, the author became much in demand by schools to visit and discuss her books, which were used in the classroom. Included here is a question-and-answer interview Cassie Brown held with a high-school class in Newfoundland, in which she reflects on her path to full-time writing, her influences, her methodology, her favourites, and advice for would-be writers." - from rear cover. Illustrated with 8 pages of plates. 8vo, black cloth with yellow and white lettering to spine. "It was September 1934. The pinch of the depression was just starting to be felt, and to escape the gloom more than three hundred people signed up for a "whoopee cruise" from New York to Cuba aboard the Ward Line's luxurious Morro Castle, reputed to be "one of the safest ships afloat." On the last night of the cruise, tragedy struck. A storm of hurricane strength had been buildingup all day, preoccupying the crew. That evening the captain died of a sudd en heart attack. Then, with the ship only twenty miles from the entrance toNew York Harbor, a fire of undetermined and suspicious origin broke out in a locker room amidships, and within minutes the Morro Castle was a floatin g torch... Author Hal Burton, who as a young reporter covered the story forthe New York Daily News, has gathered eyewitness reports from living survi vors, records from Ward Line logs, and testimony given at hearings that followed the fire to write a compelling and devastating account, complete withheroes and villains, of one of the great maritime disasters in American hi story." -from the dj. 93 BUTLER, William. 66 Days Adrift : A True Story of Disaster and Survival on the Open Sea

BUTLER, William. 66 Days Adrift : A True Story of Disaster and Survival on the Open Sea. Camden, Maine : International Marine / McGraw-Hill, (2005). First Printing. Pp (8),1-275,(5). Maps. 8vo, illustrated card covers. "The lure of paradise was unmistakable, and Bill Butler was on a quest to find itwith his wife Simonne—riding the Pacific currents on their sloop Siboney, with a world of possibilities ahead. But, twelve hundred miles from land, the alluring ocean showed its deadly side when, without warning, a pod of pilot whales attacked their sailboat, battering it until it sank beneath the waves. The dazed couple was left drifting in midocean in a leaky six-foot raft meant for coastal waters, with only a few hastily grabbed provisions tosustain them. Simonne, who had never truly shared Bill's dream of circumna vigating the globe, blamed him bitterly for their desperate plight. In thispowerful account of their 66-day odyssey, Butler tells a gritty, harrowing tale of their battles against nature, despair, and their own demons. He re veals how he and Simonne found the strength to survive despite the ravages of hunger, storms, and sharks. Based on Butler's faithful log entries, 66 Days Adrift is both a chilling cautionary tale for sailors with big ideas and an inspiring story of love, faith, and survival against long odds." - from the back cover. In peace or war the drama produces some of the greatest moments of human courage. Commander Campbell brings ten of them to life - some of them stories of almost legendary fair excitement: the Cossack's capture of the Altmark, the sinking of the Graf Spee, and Captain Carlsen's brave fight to save the Flying Enterprise. Some of them are less well known but no less great: the fire in the Sarah Sands which first establishedthe tradition of 'Women and children first', and the sinking of the Otrant o and the gallant attempt by the destroyer Mounsey to save the lives of those on board.`- from the dj.
