Forster , The South Sea Whaler : An Annotated Bibliography 172; Thawley, Australasia and South Pacific Islands Bibliography 376.

"During the nineteenth century, enterprising traders, whalers, and missionaries from New England were extremely active in the Pacific Islands - for nearly thirty years the Fiji Islands were practically a colony of the mariners from Salem, Massachusetts. The prospect of expanded trade provided the original inspiration for the long and arduous sea voyages, but American involvement in the area rapidly became varied and extensive. Numerous Yankees served as advisers to and administrators for various Polynesian monarchs, and the fervent proselytizing of successive groups of missionaries - the first setting sail in 1819 from Boston to the Hawaiian Islands - is legendary

This is the first book to focus on New England's wide-ranging and vigorous role in the Pacific Islands, and the author vividly chronicles the lasting reciprocal influences- commercial, political, religious, and literary- springing from this dramatic confrontation of two highly individual cultures. Sixty-one evocative illustrations and drawings, including sketches from ships' logbooks, and immeasurable interest to this unusual study." -from the dj.

86 DRUETT, Joan Petticoat Whalers : Whaling Wives at Sea, 1820-1920.
University Press of New England, Hanover, NH, 2001, ISBN:1584651598
DRUETT, Joan. Petticoat Whalers : Whaling Wives at Sea, 1820-1920. Originalillustrations by Ron Druett. Hanover, New Hampshire and London : Universit y Press of New England, (2001). First Edition. Pp. (i)-vi,1-213,[1]. Illustrated. Large 8vo, art-illustrated blue cardcovers. See Renard, Antarctica 464 for 1991 New Zealand edition. Joan Druett (b. April 11, 1939, Nelson, New Zealand). A volume shedding light on the women who accompanied ship captains on whaling expeditions throughout the nineteenth century. "Joan Druett offers an informed and accessible account of little known stories of wives of whaling captains who accompanied their husbands on long and arduous journeys to bring whale oil and blubber to New England. Surprisingly, by 1850 roughly a sixth of all whaling vessels carried the captains' wives. Invariably the only woman aboard a very cramped ship, they endured harsh conditionsto provide companionship for their husbands, and sometimes even exerted a strong unofficial moral influence on a rowdy crew. Joan Druett provides captivating portraits of many of these wives and the difficult circumstances they endured. Petticoat Whalers, first published in New Zealand in 1991, hasbeen out of print since 1995. The Kendall Whaling Museum's L. Byrne Waterm an Award citation states: "It is not insignificant that Petticoat Whalers is already an indispensable classic, and [Druett's] other books and articleshave earned the status of Basic Necessities on any well-stocked shelf of m aritime narratives and reference works." - from the rear. "Lisbon as a Port Town, The British Seaman and other Maritime Themes is the second volume in a new series of original works on maritime history to be published by the University of Exeter. The series aims to illuminate not only West Country experience but also European and international topics from pre-history to the contemporary world.

The papers in this volume range widely in their subject matter, from an appreciation of Lisbon in its 'golden age', to the environmental factors governing Prince William's landing in England in 1688, to different aspects of the British seaman's life in the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries, and to a consideration of the role of management in the decline of British shipbuilding between 1945 and 1973." - the rear.

"A Breakwater book in the Arctic and Northern Life Series."

"The whale 'fishery' flourished along Canada's three coastlines for a hundred years. It was an industry in the grand tradition of Canadian resource industries - uncontrolled, rapacious, and foreign-owned. Heedless of conservation, the arctic whalers succeeded in driving a precious natural resource to the very brink of extinction. Heedless of anthropology, they recklessly undermined the foundations of traditional Inuit culture. Heedless of national sovereignty, they inadvertently raised the delicate question of who actually owned the arctic territory. Their experience in many ways foreshadows our modern concerns about oil and gas exploration 'North of Sixty.' Their story is the subject of this book. The whale pursued in the treacherous waters of the Canadian Arctic was the bowhead. An average bowhead could be divested of as much as seven hundred pieces of baleen, the springy elastic material so much in demand for buggy whips, crinolines, and other such necessities. It would also render into several hundred barrels of whale oil to light the streets and homes of Europe. Arctic whaling, then, could, and often did, provide vast profits. It, in fact. attracted more ships, employed more men, and produced greater profits than whaling anywhere else on the continent. It also produced bankruptcies and tragedies; torturous deaths and miraculous escapes.

"Dan Francis has written a truly riveting history of the whale hunt in both the eastern and the western Arctic. Using first-hand accounts -- the logs of the ships and the diaries of the seamen -- [the author] has successed in painting a puicture of everyday life on a whaler. The seasickness, the fear, the interminable boredom as the seamen waited for a sighting, the excitement that followed the cry 'There she blows', the thrill of the chase, the tedium and sheer hardwork of flensing and rendering the whale, the low pay, the bad diet; all co me to life in these pages." - from the rear cover.
