83 BATCHEN, Geoffrey Burning with Desire : The Conception of Photography. in dustjacket

Illustrated in Black-and-White. Index. 8vo, black paper covered boards, silver lettering to spine. "In an 1828 letter to his partner, Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre wrote, "Iam burning with desire to see your experiments from nature." In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within th e philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography asa medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussio n of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He examines the output of the various nominees for "first photographer," then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The resultis a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the mediums undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity." (fromthe dj). Contents : Preface.. 1. Small 8vo, illustrated pink and white card covers. “I think that every point of the policy is here adequately explained, and every criticism of it fully disposed of. I have dealt in a friendly spirit with those critics who entirely reject my policy, but I have not been sedulous to placate those who believe it in their hearts but reject it with their lips because they are afraid of being called"food taxers." That I propose to tax foreign food I have stated over and o ver again, because such a tax is the keystone of the system; but I also propose to draw the food supplies of this country from the greatest free-food area in the world—the British Empire as I see it in the near future.”- fromthe Preface. William Maxwell "Max" Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook (1879-196 4) was a Canadian-British newspaper tycoon, politician, and writer. Aitken was born in Maple, Ontario, Canada, in 1879. Methuen, London, 1972, ISBN:0416078907
BELL, Michael. Primitivism. The Critical Idiom 20. (London): Methuen & Co. Ltd., (1972). First Printing. Pp. (10),[1]-93,(1). 8vo, greyish-green clothwith pressed lettering to front board, gilt lettering to spine. Volume 20 in The Critical Idiom series. General editor: John D. Jump. "Primitivist aspirations are a permanent aspect of civilised self-reflection, not least atthe present time, and literary primitivism is one of the most complex and revealing expressions of this impulse. This study combines a brief historical and theoretical cartography with a consideration of the moral and imaginitive status of primitivist expression. Since there is no fixed entity thatcan usefully be called the 'primitive', but many imaginative projections w hose meaning and value can only be examined in terms of their artistic context, this study gives a detailed consideration of sveral authors such as Conrad, Lawrence, Melville and Golding, who have in different ways invited the term 'primitivist'. Two principal categories are distniguished: those writers who attempt to re-create the essential qualities of a pre-civilised mind, and those who in some way use the primitive motif more externally as anidea or metaphor." -from the dustjacket.
