"It was in 1953 that Ann Davison made a bit of history by being the first woman to sail th e Atlantic single-handed - a feat she recorded in her best-selling My Ship is so Small. Having arrived in America she decided to live there for a time- 'settle down' would never be the term to use for her - and before long s he wondered what should be her next adventuture. As far back as 1954 the seeds were sown in her mind of a Grand Stateside Tour: to sail from Miami to Miami; via Atlantic Seabooard to New York; by the River Hudson and.d canalsto Lake Ontario and Canada; more canals and great lakes to Chicago; by the great Rivers Illinois and Mississippi to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexic o; across the Gulf to the west coast of Florida; and home to Miaiami. But things got in the way: a marriage which 'didn't take and was, so to speak, struck off the rolls'; an illness, 'It was cancer, the doctor said, in a roundabout way, and I vvould have to have an operation ...'; another marriage, but this didn't get in the way (apart irom the time she spent trying to re member whether his name was Bert Billheimer or Bill Bertheimer), and plans for the Grand Tour began to develop. Ann was to go alone - 'I can't take that kind of time off', said Bert, adding with a grin 'besides she won't let me - her writing contracts say she has to go alone. They don't want a man. along. Spoil the story.' Without admitting that he might have spoilt it, itis our opinion that Ann's account of her solo tro trip in her 17-foot outb oard cruiser Gemini, makes delightfully enthralling reading." (from the dj). Arranged in five parts: I. Atlantic Seaboard; II. Canals; III. Lakes; IV.Rivers; V. Gulf. Very good in lightly soiled and nicked, spine-sunned but unpriceclipped dustjacket. Uncommon. 80.00
