"Vernon was advanced to admiral in 1745 and appointed to command the North Sea Fleet. He was responsible for stopping supplies from France destined to nourish the attempt of Prince Charles Edward to regain the throne of Britain for the deposed Stuart line of kings. This was his last operational command, as he askedto be relieved when the Admiralty refused to grant him the status of comma nder-in-chief. During the following year his named was removed from the list of flag officers as a result of the publication of a number of anonymous pamphlets highly critical of the Admiralty which, although he denied authorship, were known to have been written by him." -Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea, p. 911.
