Lieutenant John Clarkson, RN (b April 4, 1764, Wisbech, England - d. April 2, 1828, Woodbridge, Suffolk) was a prominent abolitionist and instrumental in the founding of Freetown, today Sierra Leone’s capital city, "John Clarkson's mission to America in 1791-1792 was a public-spirited and humanitarian enterprise designed to improve the lot of some of the negroes in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and to promote the colonization of Sierra Leone. His own account of that philanthropicventure, which is now being published for the first time, is an interesting and illuminating contribution to the history of those colonies in America and West Africa. Taken from the manuscript copy of his journal for 1791-1792, which is in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, it appears in this volume in an annotated edition, with an introduction which, it is hoped, may be helpful in putting the undertaking in its setting and in its perspective, as well as in giving a sketch of the career of Clarkson." - from the Preface. 10518 CLASEN, Claus-Peter. Palatinate in European History 1555-1618.
Basil Blackwell, Oxford, 1966,
CLASEN, Claus-Peter. The Palatinate in European History 1555-1618. Oxford :Basil Blackwell, (1966). Revised Edition. Pp (6),[1]-49,(1). 8vo, grey car d covers, lettered in green. “This study investigates both the eminent political and cultural role of the Calvinist Palatinate in the age of the Counter Reformation. After a short sketch of the aims and methods of palatine policy, the author explores whether the aggressiveness of the palatinate can be explained by the Calvinist notion of intolerance, by the political isolation of the palatinate after the Peace of Augsburg and, above all, by the background and polished thinking of the statesmen at Heidelberg in the 1560's and 1570's. The book reveals how the continuation of this anti-Catholic and anti-Habsburg policy under Christian of Anhalt and Ludwig Camerarius ledto the catastrophe of the Palatinate in the Thirty Years War. The second p art is devoted to the role of the palatinate as a cultural centre of European Calvinism. The author discusses the immigration of Dutch and French Calvinist refugees into the Palatinate. He investigates the role of Heidelberg university, analysing the international character both of the teaching and student body. The author then briefly discusses the peculiar atmosphere of the court at Heidelberg. Having distinguished itself by its strange Calvinist austerity in the sixteenth century, it became the first German court to be strongly influenced by French culture in the early seventeenth century. A final short chapter is devoted to the surprising literary tendencies of the Heidelberg statesmen.” - from the back cover. Browned, name, a few penned notes, else very good. 24.00

(8),ix-xi,(1),1-211,(1), + 16 p. of black and white plates. Illustrated. 8vo, black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "In the run-up to the Second World War, Heinrich himmler embarked on Lebensborn, his obsessive programme to populate the Thousand Year German Reich with pure-blooded Aryan men and women -- while the death camps were disposing of Jews, homosexuals and the other 'sub-humans' enumerated by Hitler in 'Mein Kampf'. Young women who displayed regular Aryan features, and could prove their descent over several untainted generations, were encouraged to bear the children of members of the SS security service whether or not they were married to them. The birthstook place in secret Lebensborn homes and between 1935 and 1945 an estimat ed 11,000 Aryan babies were born in Nazi occupied countries. But the dream did not stop there. When the Germans invaded Poland, Himmler's SS discovered many blonde, blue-eyed Polish children -- the image of the ideal Aryan. Himmler had an estimated 200,000 of them stolen as they walked home from school of played in village squares. They were transported to camps and testedto gauge their racial quality. If they passed they were first 'Germanized' and then placed with good Nazi families; those who did not measure up were used as forced labour or sent to camps that specialised in killing childre n. Now, some of these 'perfect Aryans' tell their stories, recalling the shock and confusion of discovering their real backgrounds and the emotional scars they have never been able to obliterate." - from the dj. The acquisition, expansion anmd subsequentdecline of the French colonies are traced from the days of the Restoration Monarchy, through both World Wars and the Algerian Crisis, right up to pre sent commitments in Chad and elsewhere. "Tars is a gripping firsthand account of life in the Royal Navy during four years of crucial innovation and fierce war with France and Spain. Through the lives of a small band of sailors from across the ranks Trafalgar author Tim Clayton paints a vivid picture of the navy andthe era, from close-quarter battles and roistering on the streets of Londo n, to the political decisions that built and destroyed whole empires. In this death-or-glory era the navy became the cherished weapon of an aggressivenation hungry for wealth. Fighting at sea was carried out at ever-closer q uarters and with ever-increasing intensity of firepower. Using newly discovered first-person sources, Tars takes us right up close to the crashing waves, the coarse rope, 'the music of great-guns', the blood and splinters of a pitched sea battle--and to these men's daily struggles as Britain for thefirst time conquered the waves." -- from dust jacket. [...] The Amphitrite was a grain ship, sailing out of Montreal, bound with cargo for Gibraltar and points east. Emergy signed up asthird cook. They hit the first storm two days out. The grain shifted so ba dly the ship was endangered for the voyage and Emery himself was swept off the deck and back. It was a 'bad' ship: a slow coal-burner with poor food and a very overworked galley slave -- who was often homesick. So hge jumped ship once back in Spain and lived on the Barcelona docks waiting for a new chance It came with the Winona, headed through Suez for the East Indies. "P roviding a theoretical context in which to understand Canada's fisheries, The Struggle to Organize locates broadly the similarities and differences, based on ever-changing circumstances, of the complicated tangle of organizations on both coasts, of which the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union, the Prince Ruped Fishermen's Co-operative, the Newfoundland Fishermen, Food and Allied Workers' Union, and the Eastern Fishermen's Federation are a few examples. An Investigation of all these organizations clearly reveals that workers in the fisheries are increasingly becoming a unionized labour force, continuing the struggle for survival in a corporate dominated, industrial economy. The class content of associations, co-operatives, and unions is analysed to account for their actions and directions of change." - from the rear cover. Name, else very good. 14.00

University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2013, ISBN:9781442644960 2013 1442644966
CLEMENTS, Robert N. , Captain, M.C. Merry Hell : The Story of the 25th Battalion (Nova Scotia Regiment), Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914-1919. Edited by Brian Douglas Tennyson. Toronto : University of Toronto Press, (2013). First Edition. Pp (6),[vii]-xxiii,(3),[3]-265,(7). 8vo, black cloth, giltlettering to spine.

Robert Clements (b. May 12, 1894 Yarmouth).

"Merry Hell is the only complete history of the 25th Canadian infantry battalion, which was recruited in the autumn and winter of 1914–15 and served overseas from spring 1915 until spring 1919. Author Robert N Clements, who served in the battalion throughout that period and rose from private to captain, wrotethe story many years after the war, based on his personal memories and exp eriences. As such, his story reflects two unique perspectives on Canadian military history – the remarkably fresh recollections and anecdotes of a veteran, and the outlook of a man eager to share what his generation contributed to the nation’s history, character, and identity.

Professional military historian Brian Douglas Tennyson buttresses Clements’s story with a valuable critical apparatus, including an analytical introduction that contextualizes the history and notes that explain unfamiliar points and people. Merry Hell is a captivating tale for those who enjoy stories of war and battle, and one that will entertain readers with Clements’s richly colourful anecdotes and witty poems, none of which have been published before." - from dj flap.

CLEMSON, Donovan. Lost Mine. Illustrated by David Craig. Toronto : Macmillan Company of Canada, 1967. First Edition. Pp.(10),1-176,(4). 8vo, green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. A children's adventure story set in the interior of British Columbia. "'You've got to break rock, boys, if you want to find mines.' ''Break roclc" was Uncle George's war cry.' Sixteen-year-old Paul was to hear this cry many times in his first summer of prospecting in thewild and beautiful mountains deep in the interior of British Columbia. Unc ie George, with his two partners, Hunter and Hardy, had prospected many years in these mountains, and under his uncle's guidance, Paul learns to traceveins, identify rock formations, and stake claims. Paul is also intrigued b the stories of the old-timers about a lost gold mine. When an ancient axe-cut stump is found and then a skull, Paul and Hardy, with some good-natured but skeptical bantering from George and Hunter, track down the old prospector's cache and solve an ancient riddle. The lure of prospecting, with itsfascination, dangers, and rewards, the beauty and solitude of the mountain s, the delights and incidents of camp life are vividly torn by Donovan Clemson, an experienced prospector. This fresh and informative book will be of particular interest to boys who have an interest in rocks and minerals and who enjoy outdoor life." -from the dj. Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 35.00

Ilustrated throughout. Large 8vo, art-illustrated blue glossy paper covered boards (hardcover), lettered in yellow and black.

Edward Earl Cleveland (b. March 11, 1921, Huntsville, Alabama – d. August 30, 2009, Huntsville, Alabama) commonly known as E. E. Cleveland was an author, civil rights advocate and evangelist of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

"The history of the black man in America is inseparably intertwined with the Bible. During the dark night of the black man's servitude the preacher was the only public speaker allowed on the plantation, and the Scriptures were the only approved reading. Listening to the stories of the Hebrew slavery and the Exodus, the black mandiscerned a similarity of experience and made the message of the Bible the cradle of his hope. The church became the temple of hope, and the Negro spiritual reflected the ebb and flow of his dreams. Ranging from the abject pathos of "Nobody Knows but Jesus" to the triumphant notes of "Free at Last," the black man's music mirrors his history and hopes. This book is dedicated to his hope." 10580 CLEVER, Glenn NAUSE, John Age of the Astronauts. First Edition
Bytown Press, Ottawa, 1971,
CLEVER, Glenn. Age of the Astronauts. Ottawa : Bytown Press, (1971). First Edition. Pp [1]-57,(1). 8vo, card covers. A book of poetry. "Published as it is by a Canadian in the 1970s, the book is significant for other reasons. It rather deliberately avoids the regionalism that characterizes much Cana dian poetry. To say that Glenn Clever is a Canadian poet is to say that he is a poet who happens to be a Canadian. His writing scarcely displays the self-conscious concern with national identity or regional phenomena which marks the work of many Canadian contemporaries. This is neither a virtue nor a fault, but it is an interesting fact. Secondly, any young man who today aspires to great achievement as a poet might take a lesson from the prosody of Clever's poems, the majority of which reflect a rigid self-discipline inthe development of craft. His choice of traditional forms, such as the son net, of which there are ten, and the quatrain stanza of the 17th century lyricists, manifests a striving for classical precision. "Correctness," "precision," and "self-discipline" are not the popular terms they once were, butthe writer who wants to be a poet must embrace them if he is to attain his goal." - from the Introduction by John Nause. "Age of the Astronauts", "Th e Chinese Box", "Zombies", "Death", "Heart's Desire", "Destiny", "Triolet","Follow Your Heart", "Autumn Days", " Birds of Passage", "Prairie Crossroa ds", "True Love", "Longing", "Little One", "Premonition", " Illusion", "TheGolden Age", "Blue-Bells", "False Love", " Love's Logarithm", "Parting", " The Gift of the Fairies", "Memory", " Winter of Affection", "Embers", " Dusky Eyes", "The Dreamer", "The Suzerainne", "The Heart's Remembering", "The Recruit: November 11th", "Nothing of Regret", "Fear", "Futility", "Evening Prayers", "The Dream", "The Peace of Death", "Nignt-Fears", "Rain Call", "Passing Fancy", "Requiem", "The Sacrifice", "Casualty Lists", "Cease-Fire", "Life in Death", "Salute", and "The Peace that Passes Understanding". (8),[ix]-xiv,[1]-249,(1). 8vo,printed white card covers with grey and maroon lettering to front cover an d spine. Reappraisals: Canadian Writers, number 10. "This volume re-evaluates 'Canada's first man of letters,' Roiberts the poet and novelist; the romancer and translator; the critic and journalist; the historian. Charles G.D. Roberts, 'the father of Canadian Literature', is considered to be 'among the finer and more enduringly interesting writers of his generation,' and 'still a living presence in contemporary poetic consciousness.' His shortcomings are not ignored: 'Frye remakrs tersely that Roberts wrote no intellectualized poetry... because he had nothing intellectual in his mind'; 'Roberts' sense of his failure to develop as a poet may be characterized as a failure of vision...'. The fifteen essays range from an affirmation of Roberts'view 'that literature can express abiding truths; indeed, that truth is ac cessible, determinable, communicable,' to the relativistic approach of Foucault's assertion that the 'author' Charles G.D. Roberts does not exist and there is no coherent identifiable truth permeating his work." -from the rear cover.
