(2),[1]-49,(1), + 7 p. of plates. Illustrated. Large 8vo,printed cream card covers with yapped edges, blank spine. This volume was originally published by the Newport Historical Society in 1934. "Opportunity has been taken to correct some errors in the original text, and to add illustrations; but the involved story of the suspension of the Line, in the summer of 1937, and the subsequent sale of the steamers and their destruction at Baltimore, seemed more than could be undertaken without a complete revision of the paper. For the same reason, no attempt was made to cover the acquisition, by the Colonial Line, of the Camden (Comet) and Belfast (Arrow)of the Banger Line, as successors to the Concord and Lexington, nor the mo re recent conversions and war service of the two former vessels." - from the foreword. Covell was an eminent Rhode Island marine historian. Spine and edges faintly browned, minor nicking to yapped edges, else vg. Presentationcopy signed, dated, and inscribed by Covell on the ffep. "This is the first modern biography of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose. One of th most famous and dashing figures in Scottish history, his heroic struggle in the face of hopeless odds still excites the imagination. For three years Montrose was in thevanguard of the fight against Catholicism and Stuart despotism. Yet during this time, extremists among the Covenanters became ever more influential a nd Montrose, sickened by their excesses, defected to the King. Under Charles I he enjoyed his 'glorious year' of dazzling victories, routing the rebels in a series of battles. But his dramatic success was shortlived, and in quick succession he was defeated, exiled and finally betrayed. Montrose was hanged in 1650, yet his legendary victories remain to this day one of the most astonishing military episodes in British history." - from the rear cover. Minor cover creasing, else vg. (RUTTMANN, Walter). COWAN, Michael. Walter Ruttmann and the Cineam of Multiplicity : Avant-Garde, Advertising, Modernity. (Amsterdam): Amsterdam University Press, (2014). First Printing. Pp. (4),[5]-259,(1). 8vo, illustrated red and black glossy paper covered boards, white and yellow lettering to front cover, yellow lettering to red title block on spine. A volume in the Film Culture in Transition series. "Walter Ruttmann is known as a key figure of early avant-garde cinema, a pioneer in experimental animation and one ofthe silent period's most celebrated montage films 'Berlin: Symphony of a G reat City (1927)'. But like many of his contemporaries in the Weimar avant-garde film scene, Ruttmann also worked in advertising, and he would g on tomake numerous other types of 'useful' films, such as industrial films, med ical films and -- more controversially -- National Socialist propaganda. The first study of Ruttmann in English, 'Walter Ruttmann and the Cinema of Multiplicity' sheds light on this neglected aspect of Ruttmann's filmmaking, but it also rethinks his significance in light of recent transformations infilm studies. Rather than a biography of Ruttmann, the book offer a critic al reflection on the imbrications between avant-garde film and industrial society in the early 20th century. In particular, it shows hwo Ruttmann's filmmaking incorporated and enacted strategies for managing the multiplicities of mass society from Weimar democracy to National Socialism. In so doing,it also reframes the debate concerning the relation between modernist expe rimentation and fascist aesthetics." - from the rear cover. Contents: 1. Absolute Advertising: Abstraction and Figuration in Ruttmann's Animated Product Advertisements (1922-1927); 2. The Cross-Section: Images of the World and Contingency Management in Ruttmann's Montage Films of the Late 1920s (1927-1929); 3. Statistics and Biopolitics: Conceiving the National Body in Ruttmann's Hygiene Films (1930-1933); 4. "Überall Stahl": Forming the New Nation in Ruttmann's Steel and Armament Films (1934-1940). COWART, Georgia J. The Triumph of Pleasure : Louis XIV & the Politics of Spectacle. Chicago & London : The University of Chicago Press, (2008). First Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xxiii,(1),[1]-299,(5),+ 8 colour plates. Black-and-white text illustrations. 8vo, tan cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Prominentcomponents of Louis XIVs propaganda, the arts of spectacle also became sou rces of a potent resistance to the monarchy in late seventeenth-century France. With a particular focus on the court ballet, comedy-ballet, opera, andopera-ballet, Georgia J. Cowart tells the long-neglected story of how the festive arts deployed an intricate network of subversive satire to undermine the rhetoric of sovereign authority. With bold revisionist strokes, Cowart traces this strain of artistic dissent through the comedy-ballets of Jean-Baptiste Lully and Molière, the late operatic works of Lully and the operas of his sons, the opera-ballets of André Campra and his contemporaries, and the related imagery of Antoine Watteaus well-known painting The Pilgrimage to Cythera. She contends that through a variety of means, including the parody of old-fashioned court entertainments, these works reclaimed traditional allegories for new ideological aims, setting the tone for the Enlightenment. Exploring these arts from the perspective of spectacle as it emerged from the court into the Parisian public sphere, Cowart ultimately situates the ballet and related genres as the missing link between an imagery of propaganda and an imagery of political protest." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction : The Allure of Spectacle and the Prerogative of Pleasure. 1. Muses of Pleasure : Louis XIV’s Early Court Ballet, 1651–1660. 2. COX, Caroline. Bags : An Illustrated History. (London): Aurum Press Ltd, (2007). First Printing.. Pp (7),8-176. Single / double column. Small folio, black cloth, silver lettering. "Handbags have never been more important in fashion: the 'must-have' bag of the season is a much-lusted-after designer item that can make or break a fashion house. For its owner, the handbag is an intimate extension of the body, a kind of mobile home for all the items indispensable for daily life, and at the same time an indicator of her fashionability - be it Prada, Vuitton or Chanel. Here, Caroline Cox tells the intriguing story of the handbag, in fact a relatively recent phenomenon only in general use since the early twentieth century. She traces its development from its origins in the nineteenth century with reticules (essentially pockets with handles) and Vuitton's revolutionary Noe bag designed for the female traveller, via Art Deco clutch bags moulded in Bakelite and the HermèsKelly bag endorsed by Princess Grace in the 1950s, right up to the man-bag s and the it bag of the moment, the Marc Jacobs Stam. Lavishly illustrated throughout with rare and striking images of bags historical and modern, andexquisitely designed, "Bags" is a must-have book for any follower of fashi on" - from the dj. "We all think we know the Titanic story: it is one of the dominant myths of our age, a universal symbol of humanity's plight in the world of modern technology. Yet nearly all the obvious conclusions about the Titanic are either plainly wrong or highly debatable. The disaster was not caused by arrogance, greed, or reckless speed, and would not have been averted by provision of more lifeboats. Not only does Stephen Cox refute the popular myth -- he shows that the true story is more interesting thanthe myth, and much more disturbing. After all these years, the agonizing m oral dilemmas of the Titanic remain to some extent unresolved." -from the rear cover. Very good. 15.00

It is not a diary, but a life-story from his fourteenth to his fiftysecond year, of an intrepid and humorous Kentish merchant seaman." - from the Introduction. Although most of Coxere's travels were around Europe and the Mediterranean, he did sail as far as Newfoundland in 1659 (see pp.80-81). Other references on pp. 11 and 111. Coxere mentions the cod fishery, lobsters, and the fact that the "Indians seldom appears, but have left the country", along with this little proverb about Newfoundland: "If it were not for wood, water and fish, Newfoundland would not be worth a rish." [rish = rush]. Damp specking to boards, occasional light foxing, else very good. Due to its small size, shipping costs should be a bit cheaper than quoted. 30.00

Pack up your flannels and your fishingtackle, leave behind your prejudices and your summer clothing, take your t rout-pole in one hand and a copy of Haliburton in the other, and step on board a Cunarder at Boston. In thirty-six hours you are in the loyal little province, and above you floats the red flag and the cross of St. George. My word for it, you will not regret the trip. "That the idea of visiting Nova Scotia ever struck any living person as something peculiarly pleasant and cheerful, is not within the bounds of probability. Very rude people are wontto speak of Halifax in connection with the name of a place not alluded to in polite society - except by clergymen. As for the rest of the Province, there are certain vague rumours of extensive and constant fogs, but nothing more. The land is a sort of terra incognita. Many take it to be a part of Canada, and others firmly believe it is somewhere in Newfoundland." - pp.13-14. Society of Manufacturing Engineers / American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dearborn, Michigan / New York, 1998, ISBN:0872634914
CRABB, Howard C. The Virtual Engineer : 21st century product development. Dearborn, Michigan : Society of Manufacturing Engineers / New York : American Society of Mechanical Engineers, (1998). First Printing. Pp (14),[xv]-xxv,(1),[1]-166. Illustrated. Index. 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to front board and spine. "In the manufacturing industries, competition has never been fiercer and technology has never changed faster. Companies need to compress time-to-market and time-to-money if they are to prosper. Yet traditional organizational structures and modes of thinking can block change. Senior management may be unaware of many technology issues and their implications for future success or failure. Communications barriers exist at all levels and across functional divisions. A company's goals can be sketched on thewhite board or published in the annual report but if there is no road map showing the fast lanes and the bridges over the chasms, achieving them willbe all but impossible. Dr Howard Crabb defines a number of roadblocks that prevent manufacturing companies trom introducing new products that fit the wants and needs of the customer at a reasonable cost and in a shorter tirr e than in the past. Solutions to these problems are needed, and Dr. Crabb offers them. These are not just ideas - they are ideas that work. Predictiveengineering software capabilities and ever-accelerating improvements in en gineering workstatitons put the power of a supercomputer on an engineer's desk. Visual engineering allows anyone affected by a new product design to see it, as a 3-D rendering as clear as dear as anything you would see in a TV commercial. Senior management, engineering, manufacturing, finance, and sales and marketing can all tell what is being proposed, before a cent is spent on physical prototypes. And new technology incorporates knowledge-basedsys:ems, decades of design rules, ana past designs, at the command of the new virtual engineer. How does a company integrate these and other advancesinto their existing systems and organizations? This book explains how a sy stems engineering approach will make a difference." (from the dj). Pp (4),[v]-vi,(2),1-247,(1). Small8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Gerald Robertson Cragg. "'We rec ognize instinctively the importance of the issues raised in the religious discussion of the Restoration era. The place of reason, the character of morality, the limits of authority, the nature of the universe, the reign of law—these are all questions which we still debate. What is more, we discuss them in essentially the same spirit as that which first emerged in the latter part of the seventeenth century. The period of transition is the generation which followed the Restoration, and during those years the new lines of thought were marked out.' This is how Dr Cragg introduces his critical study of changes in religious thought in the latter half of the seventeenth century. His main concern is with the eclipse of Calvinism, the Cambridge Platonists, the religious significance of Locke, Toland and the rise of Deism, the relationship between the Church and the Civil power and the question ofreligious toleration. 12191 CRAIG, Amanda Foreign Bodies. First Edition in dustjacket
Hutchinson, London , 1990, ISBN:0091745209
CRAIG, Amanda. Foreign Bodies. London : Hutchinson, (1990). First British Edition. Pp (6),1-306. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt titles to spine. Amanda Craig (born 1959) is a British novelist and journalist. This is her first novel. "Running away from home, I slammed the front door on my cloak, and had to ring the bell to be released." Such is the inauspicious start of eighteen-year old Pmma Kenward's bid for freedom. Intellectually precocious and emotionally naive, she decamps from her dull Sloane family to share a bohemian life in Tuscany with her American friend and role-model Svlvia. She has nine months in whirh to discover whether she has any real talent as a painter, orwhether she will have to subside into conventionality by taking up her pla ce at Oxford. Dazzled by her first love-affair with Lucio, a local musician, and seduced by the louche existence of the artistic expatriate, Emma is initially blind to the fierce emotions festering in the hill-town of Santorno. Evidence of adultery, suicide, family feuding and antagonism towards herown behaviour fail to pierce her self-absorption, despite the efforts of t he rebarbative Oxford don, Dr. Evenlode It is only as the summer reaches its height that Emma's sense of perspective is sharpened bv a humiliating personal betrayal and the realisation that she is holding the key to a murder. This is a witty and assured debut by a young award award-winning journalis t. Amanda Craig, herself brought up in Tuscany, convincingly portrays the realities of life behind the pictumresque facade so admired by holiday-makers. Foweign Bodies combines a detective story, the tale ot a modern sentimental education and a portrait of the artist as a young woman - arrogant, acid, uncomciuusiy comical and ultimately captivatiiting." 12192 CRAIG, Amanda Private Place. First Edition in dustjacket
Hutchinson, London , 1991, ISBN:0091747643
CRAIG, Amanda. A Private Place. London : Hutchinson, (1991). First British Edition. Pp (10),[3]-246,(2). 8vo, navy cloth, gilt titles to spine. AmandaCraig (born 1959) is a British novelist and journalist. "Would you send yo ur child to Knotshead? Knotshead advertises itselt as a top public school. With its arcadian setting, progressive curriculum and healthy mixing of thesexes, it is surely one of which any parent would approve. But what ot the pupils? Winthrop T. Sheen,m a much expelled American preppy, thinks it is 'worse than a summer camp for web feet'. To Alice Godwin, intensely lonely and academic, it is an excruciating test of endurance leavened only by her lessons with the classics master (and his parrot Horatio). Both are terrorised by Johnny Tore, son of a sixties rock star, and 'the Lads' who run the school underground of drugs, alcohol and sex. The staff are too enraptured by educational theories and their own power struggles to notice what is going on. Only Grub, gifted musician and court-iester to Tore, sees that fear ana loatning are escalating to anarchy and murder. Amanda Craig is a young writer of outstanding lite.rarv talent with a passion for story-telling. Asin her first novel, Foreign Bodies, she exposes the dangers of romanticism with a sardonic wit. .But tne?comedy in A Private Place is darker, giving a sinister edge to a story which is both very modern and the retelling of an ancient Greek myth."
