"The success of Mr Marquis Childs's volume, 'Sweden: The Middle Way', shows what universal interest there is in the study of Co-operative Momvements. This was a book which caused President Roosevelt to send a special mission to study 'Co-operation' in England, the cradle of such movements, The first discovery of the mission was the absence of any comprehensive modern book on Co-operation in England! While trade fluctuatesbetween slump and boom, one business in Great Birtain has discovered the s ecret of perpetual progress. It is the Co-operative Movement created, capitalized, and controlled by the 7,500,000 customers who shop at their 15,000 stories -- the only British business owned by consumers." - from the dustjacket. Croom Helm, London & Sydney, 1986, ISBN:0709915675
ELLIS, Jane. The Russian Orthodox Church : A Contemporary History. London &Sydney : Croom Helm, (1986). First Edition. Pp (8),1-531,(5). Index. 8vo, black cloth, silver lettering to spine. No. 22 in the Keston Books series. "The emergence of the Russian Orthodox Church into the international ecclesiastical arena, which began shortly after Stalin allowed the restoration ofthe Moscow Patriarchate in 1943 and gained momentum when the church joined the World Council of Churches in 1961, has continued to gather pace over t he last 20 years. However, during the same period many parishes and individual believers within the Russian Orthodox Church have faced very severe problems in practising their faith. This book, which concentrates on the recent history of the church, examines the situation 3f Russian Orthodox believers in the Soviet Union. It demonstrates clearly that freedom of religion does not exist in the Soviet Union. However, the church remains a vigorous and potent force in Soviet society which the authorities are unable to ignore. The first part of the book reports on the religious life of the church - the clergy, the faithful, the parishes and the monasteries. It also describes how the Moscow Patriarchate functions, how worship and administration ofchurch life are organised and what problems are encountered in the process . Part 2 chronicles the development of public criticism of the Moscow Patriarchate's policies and the great personal hardships which many of the critics have suffered as a consequence. It also looks closely at the ideals and philosophies which inspire the critics. The strength of this criticism indicates that the future of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Soviet period may be no less controversial than its past." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction. Part I. 1. Churches and dioceses. 2. Parish life. 3. The clergy. 4. Theological education. 5. Monasticism. 6. Publications. 7. The laity. 8. The episcopate. 9. Church-state relations. Part 2. Concluding summary : up to 1985. Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 50.00

This period witnessed an increase in long-dis tance travel and the construction of large new inter-provincial communications networks. The Christian Church's expansion is but one example of both phenomena. The contributions here present readers with new research on the explosion in travel and large-scale communication, and the effect on this ofdifferent geographical possibilities and limitations. The papers deal with a variety of travel experiences (religious pilgrimages; travel for work an d educational purposes; journeys of the soul) and writings about travel; they look at various kinds of communication (ecclesiastical communication; communication for commerce; and the communication of religious identity); andthey examine both physical and psychological aspects of geography, travel and communication." - from the dustjacket. Knopf, New York, 2001, ISBN:0375403744
ELLIS, Richard. Encyclopedia of the Sea. New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 2001. Second Printing. Pp (6),v-vii,(3),3-380,(10) + 8 pages of colour plates. Many illustrations in the text. Double column. 8vo, pebbled blue spine with blue paper-covered boards, silver lettering to spine. "From one of the world's leading experts on the sea comes this ocean-sized compendium of aquatic life and lore. Richard Ellis - who is also recognized as America's foremostpainter of marine subjects--gives us a masterful synthesis of years of inv estigation and tens of thousands of disparate sources. The result is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated, and highly readable reference on almost everything that is known about the sea. Ellis's research has taken him all over the world - from Nantucket to Patagonia, from Newfoundland to New Zealand. Now he leads us on a great journey: from the amazing diversity of the creatures of the oceans to the birds who inhabit the skies above them; from the little-known realms of marine geography to the men and women who have bravely explored them; from the fabulous legends the sea has inspired through the ages to the intriguing evolution of the tools of nautical navigation. With more than 450 of the author's own drawings and paintings accompanying the text, Ellis reveals the many wonders of the oceans--abalone, zooxanthellae, and everything in between. We learn about the peculiar behavior of Vampyroteuthis infernalis (the "vampire squid from hell") and about MochaDick, the real sperm whale that may have inspired Melville's Moby-Dick; wh ere the crown-of-thorns starfish gets its name and how the rare coelacanth, cousin to a species extinct for 70 million years--and one of the most misp ronounced fish in the sea--was rediscovered. We visit lovely and exotic locations from Venice to Ni'ihau (Hawaii's "forbidden isle"), and consider both the fearsome kraken (a mythical sea monster often seen by Scandinavian clergymen) and the notorious real-life pirate Captain Kidd (whose hidden treasure was never found). Exhaustive, concise, and entertaining, the Encyclopedia of the Sea is invaluable as an all-inclusive, one-volume source for anyone interested in the sea, its inhabitants, and man's exploration of its mysteries." - from the dj. Her body was dumped on a road way in a run-down L.A. suburb. The killer was never found. The case was closed. It was a sordid back-page homicide that nobody remembered. Except her son. James Ellroy was ten years old when his mother died. His bereavement was complex and ambiguous. He grew up obsessed with murdered women and crime. His life spun hellishly out opf control. He ran from the ghost of Jean Ellroy. He became a writer of radically provocative and best-selling crime novels. he tried to reclaim his mother through ficiton. It didn't work. He quit running and wrote this memoir. 'My Dark Places' is Jean Ellroy's and James Ellroy's story -- from 1958 to all points past and up to this moment. Itis the story of a brilliant homicide detective named Bil Stoner, and of th e investigation he and James Ellroy took to find Jean Ellroy's killer." - from the dustjacket. ELLSBERG, Edward, Captain. Men Under the Sea. New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, (June) 1945. Ninth Printing. Pp. (2),[i]-xii,(2),1-365,(5). 24 black and white plates plus frontispiece. 8vo, blue cloth cover with gilt lettering to spine, gilt illustration to cover. Anderson 370. "...Commander Ellsberg here tells the story of the men who go down under the sea into the green twilight and blackness of the ocean floor. He begins with an account of thefinal stages of the salvaging of the submarine S-51 and the quiet heroism of the divers who brought that ship up from the bottom. From this he turns to the tragedy of the S-4, sunk by the destroyer Paulding off Provincetown Harbor, and in a matchless series of chapters relates his own breathless race by ambulance, train and power boat to the scene of the collision and itsheart-rending aftermath. These two undersea tragedies [...] furnish him wi th a background for describing the most recent inventions in submarine salvage work and the latest safety devices for the rescue of men trapped in stricken ships below the sea. [...] The lure of sunken treasure and the possibilities of its recovery fill the closing pages of this unique book of action and adventure." -from the dj [which incidentally gives Ellsberg the rank of Commander]. First Edition. Pp [i]-xiv,(2),[1]-247,(1). Illustrated. Map. Index. 8vo, black cloth, silver lettering to spine.

“In Frontier Cattle Ranching in the Land and Times of Charlie Russell, Warren Elofson debunks the myth of the American "wild west" and the Canadian "mild west" by demonstrating that cattlemen on both sides of the forty-ninth parallel shared a common experience. Focusing on Montana, Southern Alberta, Southern Saskatchewan, and the well-known figure of Charlie Russell - an artist and storyteller from that era who spent time on both sides of the border - Elofson examines the lives of cowboys and ranch owners, looking closely at the prevalence of drunkenness, prostitution, gunplay, rustling, and vigilante justice in both Canada and the USA.” - from the dj.
