17211 FARLEY, John To Cast Out Disease : A History of the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation (1913-1951). First Edition in dustjacket
Oxford University Press, Oxford / London, 2004, ISBN:0195166310 2004 0195166310
FARLEY, John. To Cast Out Disease : A History of the International Health Division of the Rockefeller Foundation (1913-1951). (Oxford / New York) : Oxford University Press, 2004. First Printing. Pp (6),vii-x,(2),1-323,(1). Illustrated. Index. 8vo, green cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

"Though one ofthe most important public health agencies of the 20th century and the most powerful and richest branch of the Rockefeller Foundation, the Internation al Health Division's history (1913-1951) has never been told before. This original work is based on a vast multitude of letters, reports and photographs the author uncovered in the Rockefeller Archives. Farley describes the internal struggles and the conflicts with foreign and US governments of the "medical barons" who ran the organization as they set its goals and tried to eradicate some of the world's most serious diseases. He also describes the first PDF testing of DDT and the preparation for the US army of a yellow fever vaccine that turned out to be contaminated. He takes the reader into the often byzantine world where the organization endowed schools of public health and nursing in such diverse places as London, Toronto, fascist Rome, militaristic Tokyo, and Calcutta in the dying days of the British Raj. Farley enlivens the book with sketches of the personalities and prejudices of those who worked in the Division and of the scandals that rocked it from time to time. He shows that in the continuing debate between those who believe that ePub disease is the root cause of ill health and poverty and those who see poverty as the primary cause, the Division remained firmly in the former position. He also shows that after it closed, former members exerted considerable influence on the development of the World Health Organization. Opposing some recent historians, Farley argues against the view that the Health Division served as an advance guard for American capitalism. His lively book will be welcomed by all who are interested in the history of public health, tropical disease, and medical institutions." (from the dj).

Index. 8vo, brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "John Farley examines early scientific attempts to understand some of the most fundamental biological aspects of sexual reproduction: the nature of the substancnces liberated by the sex organs; the function of eggs, spermatozoa, and spores; the relationship of sexual to asexual reproduction; the roles of male and female in the reproductive process, and the importance of sexual reproduction in the evolution of species. He givesparticular attention to the period between 1750 and 1914, during which bot h the world of biology and its perspective on the study of reproduction were rocked by two major developments: the discovery of asexual reproduction in lower plants and animais and the theory of evolution. Gametes & Spores delves deeply into the biological problems of reproduction and explores some ol their social ramifications. Thus it is relevant to the study of social and intellectual history as well as to the history of science." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction. 1. The Universality of Sex. 2. FARLEY, Philip J., Stephen S. KAPLAN, and William H. LEWIS. Arms Across theSea. Washington, D.C.: The Brookings Institution, (1978). First Paperback Printing. Pp (6),vii-x,1-134. Index. 8vo, red and blue card covers, lettered in black and white. "For the past three decades, the United States has been the world's largest exporter of arms. In 1977, however, President Carterdeclared a new approach to arms transfers, indicating tha he wished to lim it the flow of arms even more than Congress had called for in the Arms Export Control Act of 1976. This was a bold step, because Persian Gulf and Middle Eastern nations have received the largest share of U.S. arms exports in the recent past, and in both areas the Untted States has much at stake and is under strong political and economic pressure to grant requests for military equipment. This study assesses U.S. policy toward the international trade in arms. Dealing wth military assistance, government and commercial sales, and technological contributions to foreign production capabilities, the authors suggest how eacn might be used to promote the interests of the United States and international security. In the belief that U.S. witnarawal trom the arms trade would do nothing to reduce its intensity, they argue for discriminating judgment and selectivity in decisions by U.S. officials on requests for American military goods and knowledge. They recommend, along with restraint and a long-term perspective, that security assistance should be minimized, that sales should not be promoted, and that military technology should be exported as little as possible—despite the powerful pressures, both in the United States and abroad, that make such a course difficult." (from the back cover). Contents : 1. The United States and the World Arms Market : Debate over U.S. Arms Transfers - The World Arms Market. 2. FARRAN, Roy. Operation Tombola. London / New York / Sydney : Arms and Armour Press, (1986). Second Edition. Pp (6),7-256. Maps. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. First published in 1960 by Collins, London. "In March 1945, as the Allied advance in Italy approached its climax, Roy Farran dropped by parachute into the Northern Apennines. Operation Tombola, the last and the most ambitious or the Special Air Service expeditions, had begun "Tombola' differed in several respects from previous S.A.S. operations. Rather than adopt the usual hit and run tactics employed in S.A.S. raids on Germanheadquarters and lines of supply, Farran decided to join forces with the I talian partisans in the area, to occupy the inaccessible valleys of the Apennines and to form an organized resistance in the rear of the main German army. These tactics were remarkably successful. At the head of his force, Farran stormed a German corps headquarters, resisted a full-scale attack on his valley, survived a nightmarish ride through the German ranks, and for six weeks played havoc with their lines of communication, eventually joining forces with the advancing American army. [...] In Operation Tombola, he describes his adventures in a simple, light-hearted manner which belies their audacity, while the rivalries between the Partisans, the girl staffetas with pistols stuffed in their belts and the killed pper whom Farran had included in a supply drop add a delightful comic opera touch. (from the dj). Verygood in price-clpped dustjacket. Signed with inscription from the author t o former Nova Scotia Premier Gerald Regan. 35.00

17265 FARRER, Edward CUMMING, Carman Secret Craft : The Journalism of Edward Farrer.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto , 1992, ISBN:0802028462
(FARRER, Edward). CUMMING, Carman. Secret Craft : The Journalism of Edward Farrer. Toronto : University of Toronto Press, (1992). Pp [i]-xv,(1),[1]-334,(2). Illustrated. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Edward Farrer is one of the most mysterious figures in Canadian journalistic history and arguably one of the most brilliant. He became a key figure in Sir John A. Macdonald's last election campaign in 1891, when the prime ministeridentified him as the author of a secret pamphlet that advised the United States on how to bludgeon Canada into union. In this biography Carman Cumming explores Farrer's annexation activities in the context of his entire career. An itinerant Irish writer who apparently fabricated a personal background, Farrer came to Canada about 1870. He worked for various newspapers until becoming the editor of the Toronto Mail in 1885. In that capacity, Cumming suggests, he exploited 'race and creed' troubles in the post-Riel era, first to detach the Mail from Macdonald's control, then to encourage the break-up of Confederation and annexation. Cumming also traces Farrer's close relations with senior members of the Liberal party during and after the pamphlet incident in 1891. He argues that Farrer's thoughtful, low-key writing style and his resistance to the pad press helped to alter permanently the nature of Canadian newspapers." - from the dj. 17281 FARUKI, Kemal A. Evolution of Islamic Constitutional Theory and Practice from 610 to 1926.
National Publishing House Ltd., Karachi / Dacca , 1971,
FARUKI, Kemal A. The Evolution of Islamic Constitutional Theory and Practice from 610 to 1926. Karachi – Dacca : National Publishing House Ltd., AH 1391 / 1971 CE. Pp (4),vii-vii,(2),ix-x,[1]-299,(1), Index. 8vo, brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “Unique in its scope and the treatment of its sub ject, this book presents an objective historical analysis of how the Islamic concept of state evolved in the main centres of the Muslim world from thedawn of Islam in 610 to the end of the caliphate and the two Congresses of 1926. Giving a concise but lucid description of the development of Islamic constitutional theory the author shows how theory and practice have been c onstantly and intimately connected in terms of mutual cause and effect-a fact which has not always been fully appreciated. For the specialist, this work places the mass of historical detail in an orderly perspective; and for others, it offers an eminently readable account of the essential elements of Islamic constitutional history. While paying full attention to regional variations-particularly of more recent times-the study also identifies the common themes which together characterize both the unity and the diversity of Muslim constitutional experience. It is also because of these basic factors of identity that the author speaks in terms of one evolving concept of state or constitutional theory, rather than of a series of concepts and theories. The book provides an indispensable basis for any attempt to discern the significance of present factors in the political life of Muslim nations in terms of past Islamic experience and thinking. This is all the more important in that recent trends and events in the Muslim world generally have been subject to the kind of constant flux and sudden change that have often made the past seem irrelevant and the future un-fathomable. Pointing out that God has given human beings the responsibility of being his vicegerents on earth, the author concludes: This is the trust and that is the responsibility from which we cannot escape and for which we shall be held-individually and collectively-accountable on the Day of Reckoning. For it is we. the living generation of the khalaf, who are God's khulafa1." An elaborate glossary and two comprehensive indexes (of persons and general) at the end of the book great facilitate its use as a basic work of reference.” (from the dj). Contents : Part I. The Heroic Age. 1. Pre-Islamic Arabia (to 610). 2. The Prophet Muhammad (610-632). 3. The Rashidun Era (632-661). Part II. The Classical Age. 4. The Umayyad Era (661-750). 5. A Faculty-Graduate Student Project, realized with the cooperation of the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. Organized by Beatrice Farwell. Double column. 4to, illustrated black card covers with white lettering to front and spine. One of a limited edition of 1200 catalogues. "Baudelaire as an art critic has been rather thoroughly investigated. His Salons have beencombed, his writings on Delacroix analyzed, and his aesthetic theories set forth. He was alsoa commentator on 'caricature', which then included Goya as well as Daumier. Sprinkled throughout his writings, however, are the names of image-makers of whom the history of art has taken little account -- Achille Deveria, Nicolas Maurin, Octave Tassaert and others. From a perspective of the vanguard of French intellectual and artistic life, Baudelaire opened a secret window on a class of imagery that has led an underground existence, ignored by students of high art. Baudelaire was a connoisseur and a collector of this imagery, and most of it was executed in the medium of lithography for a commercial market." - from the introduction. With errata slip laid in. Includes several dozen black and white illustrations. Covers lightly rubbed, some instances of pencilled underlining, else very good. 25.00
