21112 GRAFTON, Anthony Forgers and Critics : Creativity and Duplicity in Western Scholarship.. First Edition in dustjacket
Princeton University Press, Princeton, N.J., 1990, ISBN:0691055440
GRAFTON, Anthony. Forgers and Critics : Creativity and Duplicity in WesternScholarship. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, (1990). First Pr inting. Pp (6),vii-x,(2),3-157,(1). A few illustrations (including tittle-pages) in the text. 8vo, tan cloth, gilt lettering to spine. ".Just as it "takes a thief to catch a thief," so the forger greatly aids the search for historical truth, maintains Anthony Grafton in this wide-ranging explorationof the links between forgery and scholarship. Labeling forgery the "crimin al sibling" of criticism, he describes a panorama of remarkable individuals--forgers, from classical Greece through the recent past, who produced a variety of splendid triumphs of learning and style, and scholarly detectives, who honed the tools of scholarship in attempts to unmask these skillful fa kers. In the process he discloses the extent, the coherence, and the historical interest of two significant and tightly intertwined strands in the Western intellectual tradition. "The desire to forge," writes the author, "canbite and infect almost anyone: . . . the honest as well as the rogue." For gers are inspired not only by ambition or greed but also by impulses to play jokes, exuberant desires to see the past made whole again, or serious wishes to invoke divine or distantly historical authority for particular spiritual or national traditions. Whatever their goals, forgers in classical antiquity as well as in the modern era have often been well ahead of critics in the pursuit of methods of authenticating documents, and Grafton shows that many techniques normally considered the invention of scholars in early modern Europe were already employed in classical times. This accessible work discusses forgers as different from each other as Dionysus the "Renegade," Erasmus, Carlo Sigonio, James Macpherson ("Ossian"), Thomas Chatterton, andthe great sixteenth-century Dominican scholar Giovanni Nanni (Annius) of V iterbo, whose forged histories by Berosus, Manetho, and other ancient authors drove the real histories of the ancient world from the literary marketplace for almost a hundred years. One chapter is devoted to comparing three scholars--Porphyry (third century), Isaac Casaubon (1559-1614), and Richard Reitzenstein (1861-1931)--whose efforts to deal with the same body of forged material, the Hermetica, reveal both continuity and change in critical method. What emerges from Forgers and Critics is a new appreciation for a strange literary genre that has flourished for over 2500 years--amusing its uninvolved observers, enraging its humiliated victims, and, most importantly, contributing to a richer sense of what the past was really like." - from t he dj. Contents: 1. Forgery and Criticism : An Overview; 2. Forgers : Typesand Tools 3 . Critics: Tradition and Innovation; 4. Forgery into Criticism : Techniques of Metamorphosis, Metamorphosis of Techniques. With Epilogue, notes, and index. Very good, clean and solid in dustjacket. 30.00

A Dell Map-Back.

"Cornelius Warren ("Chip") Grafton (1909–1982) was an American crime novelist. He was born and raised in China, where his parents were working as missionaries. He was educated in Clinton, South Carolina, studying law and journalism, and became a municipal bond attorney in Louisville, Kentucky. The hero of his first two mystery novels (The Rat Began to Gnaw the Rope and The Rope Began to Hang the Butcher) was a lawyer named Gilmore Henry. Using the first two lines of a nursery rhyme as the titles of his first two novels suggested that other Gilmore Henry novels would follow, but none did. (A partial manuscript of a third novel, The Butcher Began to Kill the Ox, is known to exist. Henry did not appear in Grafton's two subsequent novels. In World War II, Grafton served with distinction as a military deception officer in the India-Burma theater.

Grafton was married to Vivian Harnsberger, and they had two daughters, Sue and Ann. Sue Grafton (1940- 2017) was also a writer and is famous for her "Alphabet Series" of crime novels. C. W. Grafton died four months before the publication of "A" Is for Alibi."

Pearson Canadian International Peacekeeping TrainingCentre), 1996. First Edition. Pp [i]-xviii,1-270. 8vo, red cardcovers with French flaps, white lettering to front and spine. "In The Seeds of Freedom , Senator Al Graham recalls his formative years in the spectactulary beautiful setting of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; a magical place of legends and myths and music, where a rich culture blends with the firece pride of the local inhabitants. It was there he acquired his lifelong commitment to the 'power of the people', and to the belief that people must be the masters of their own destinies, if they are to have any control over the circumstances oftheir lives. he has championed that belief in his work in Canada as a teac her, broadcaster, journalist, corporate executive, and Member of the Senate. He has also brought the message of democracy and empowerment to the worldstage. This is hIs moving account of the process of establishing the seeds of democratic procedures in lands far from Canada where no one thought the y would ever take hold: in Namibia, where the magical numbers 4-3-5 acquired almost supernatural significance; in Haiti, where election observers as well as voters risked their lives on election day; in the Philippines, whereven the fraud wrought by a powerful dictator could not muzzle the voice of the Philippine people; and in countless other places with equally rivettin g stories. It is an inspiring tribute to the faith and endurance of people who, against the odds, believe democracy will change their lives and society for the better." - from the dj flap. Part I. "[...] written during long watches by a keeper of Vancouver's famous Point Atkinson Light, is a definitive answer to the lighthouse question. Sifting through a century's accumulation of files, diaries, and reminiscences, author Donald Graham - a professional historian before he went on thelights - unearthed a story so remarkable his greatest problem was to make it believable to readers "in the real world." Winds at storm-torn Triangle Island blew the lightkeeper's cow into the sea - and took the lives of 25 people. At Estevan Point, keeper Robert Lally, was lighting the beacon one evening in 1942 when he discovered a cruiser firing 5.5-inch shells at the station. But official reports turned the cruiser into a Japanese submarine, and the falsified account changed Canada's history. On page after page Graham weaves stories of heroism, heartbreak, insanity, suicide, starvation, scandal and - occasionally - happiness." - from the dj. Sections: 1. Illustrated. Maps. 8vo, blue cloth. Hale and Barman British Columbia Local Histories: A Bibliography 360. "[...] written during long watches by a keeper of Vancouver's famous Point Atkinson Light, is a definitive answer to the lighthouse question. Sifting through a century's accumulation of files, diaries, and reminiscences, author Donald Graham - a professional historian before he went on the lights - unearthed a story so remarkable his greatest problem was to make it believable to readers "in the real world." Winds at storm-torn Triangle Island blew the lightkeeper's cow into the sea - and took the lives of 25 people. Within these, after 1815, Britain was able to exercise an authority far out of proportion to her resources and population. But Pax Britannica was not the simple consequence of naval superiority; it was the result of varied circumstances, one of which was Britain's ability to sustain a balance of power on the European continent." -from the dj. McGill-Queen's University Press, Montreal / London, 1972, ISBN:0773501371 1972 0773501371
GRAHAM, Gerald S. Tides of Empire : Discursions on the Expansion of Britain Overseas. Montreal / London : McGill-Queen's University Press, 1972. Pp (6),vii-x,(2),[1]-108. 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

"These linked, discursive essays on the theme of Greater Britain form a pendant to the maior works of a Canadian scholar widely recognized as an authority in the field of British maritime history. Based on the Reid Lectures, delivered at Acadia University in the spring of 1969, Tides of Empire ranges over nearly 500 years of imperial grrowth and decline.

The early chapters deal with England's first colonizing experi ments in the North Atlantic and Caribbean and the subsequent duel for empire with France, when Britain laid the foundation for a world-wide dominion based on naval supremacy. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the Empire had become a huge commercial network of which India was the strategic centre and a chapter is devoted to the means whereby the long sailing track by wav of the Cape of Good Hope was protected. The author goes on to show the extent to which the Royal Navy's Pax Britannica depended upon the maintenance of a European balance of power, then traces the slow erosion of Britain's command of the seas, under the impact of scientific and technological advances, in the years before the First World War. The final chapter, introduced by a nostalgic glance at the Empire Day celebrations of the author's boy hood in rural Ontario and concluding with the retreat from Empire after the Second World War, represents Dr. Graham's hail-and-farewell to the imperial past and salute to the uncertain future of a Commonwealth of which more than half the member states are Asian or African republics." - from the dj flap.

Cape Breton University Press, Sydney, NS, 2006, ISBN:9781897009093
GRAHAM, Glenn. The Cape Breton Fiddle : Making and Maintaining Tradition. Sydney, NS: The Cape Breton University Press, (2006). Pp. (6),7-208. With CDin pouch at rear. Illustrated. 8vo, illustrated black and brown card cover s. "Cape Breton's fiddle music traditions -- deeply rooted in the culture and language of Highland Gaels -- have become iconic the world over, but they are at a crossroads. For some observers, fiddling, bagpiping and dance are so inextricably woven with Gaelic that the language's accelerated declineduring recent decades threatens maintenance of traditional playing styles. In 'The Cape Breton Fiddle', Glenn Graham -- an accomplished fiddler who i s fully engaged with Cape Breton music as a performer and researcher -- explores both the roots of the tradition he upholds and its contemporary status. Do the 'drastic' loss of Gaelic, the adoption of the tradition by non-Gaels, global influences and commercial sucess conspire to change the musicallanguage itself? This social history of the music and an assessment of its current status are overdue. Graham's knowledge of the history of Cape Bret on's fiddling traditions, key players and indeed his close association withthe best-known and most knowledgeablefigures, convey a unique sense of the making and maintaining of the Cape Breton fiddle." - from the rear cover. John Finlayson Graham (b. May 31, 1924, Calgary, Alberta - d. November 14, 1990, Halifax).

No. 1 in the Atlantic Provinces Studies series.

Vaison p.108,117.

"This study is an attempt to find a solution to the problemof fiscal adjustment between a province or a state and its municipalities — a pressing problem throughout Canada and the United States and in many other countries in view of the great disparities in the revenue-raising capacity of municipalities, their limited tax bases, and the pressure on them to provide higher and higher levels of public services. The principles developed are of general applicability, but their use is illustrated by taking Nova Scotia as a case study.

It should be emphasized that the proposals made in this study, along with the argument developed in support of them, are not intended as mere "academic" exercises. They are made with the view to their becoming the basis for public policy in provincial - municipal fiscal relations.

Chapters on the economic history and geography of Nova Scotia and on why Nova Scotia is a low-income province and chapters on federal-provincial fiscal relations and on municipal organization and finance in Nova Scotia provide the framework for the integrated discussion of ecoionomic development and fiscal adjustment which follows. These two aspects of the study are brought together in two chapters dealing with the effects of public services on the allocation of resources and with the nature of fiscal adjustment conducive to optimum allocation. Here is the theoretical core of the study.

The study contains considerable discussion of the types of economic adjustment appropriate to Nova Scotia. The evidence suggests that there is a tendency for both labour and capital to have higher marginal productivities in other parts of the country and it is likely that there will therefore be continued migration of both from the Province. At the same time there is considerable room for raising average incomes by internal adjustment, especially by rationalization of primary operations in fishing, farming, and forestry, but also by some expansion of secondary manufacturing.

Present provincial - municipal fiscal relations in Nova Scotia are examined with reference to the principle of fiscal equity. A programme of fiscal adjustment is proposed which would implement the principle of fiscal equity for genepal servicesand for local services by
unconditional grants, these grants
being designed to permit all munioipalties of each type to provide "foundation" or "standard" levels of services with the same burdens of taxation on property. Other proposals
would give some financial relief to all municipalities. The municipalities would be left with considerable flexibility in determining the actual levels of their services for they would be free to raise the level of any ser
vice they wished, by taxing them- selves more neavny, oy applying their unconditional grants for the purpose, or by doing both." - from the dj.

21174 GRAHAM, Winston Spanish Armadas. First American Edition
Doubleday, Garden City, 1972,
GRAHAM, Winston. The Spanish Armadas. Garden City : Doubleday & Co., (1972). First US Printing. Pp 288. Illustrated. Lg 8vo, blue cloth. "This historyof a great naval war reveals a wealth of interest and excitement unknown t o the general reader. For most people the conflict between England and Spain in the sixteenth century consisted solely in the destruction of the GreatArmada in 1588 by Drake, Howard, and the English weather. These pages plac e that Armada in its true position, as only the most spectacular of many attempts by the Spanish to conquer England and make it Catholic, first by friendship, then by the marriage of Philip to Mary, and later by battle. A vivid summary is made of the disruptive forces in Europe that, through thirty years, broke down the tradition of amity between England and Spain. It shows how, from the meeting in 1554 between Philip and Elizabeth, the two maintained their respect for each other and a facade of peace long after the wish for peace had gone. Although the clash of the two great fleets provides the central theme of this work, it makes clear that the defeat of the First Armada did not mean the end of the Spanish navy but rather its beginning onnew lines. After 1588 England had only one other real success against Spai n, at Cadiz in 1596. Spain launched three more armadas. Little-known aspects of this extraordinary combat, upon which so much of the later history of western Europe depended, are strikingly brought to life in this book by a writer who is steeped in the spirit of the period. Winston Graham's fame hasso far been built on his novels, and the story-teller's gifts are very evi dent in the swift-moving narrative and brilliant characterization of this book. GRANATSTEIN, J.L. and David BERCUSON. War and Peacekeeping : From South Africa to the Gulf - Canada's Limited Wars. (Toronto) : Key Porter Books, (1991). First Printing. Pp (6),1-266. Illustrated. 8vo, blue cloth. "Canada's military history consists of more than participation in the two world wars. From the Riel Rebellions and the Boer War, to the Korean War, the United Nations peacekeeping missions and the recent Gulf War, Canadians have fought and died on our own frontiers and on distant continents. [...] a richly documented history of Canada's other wars, portrays the gradual evolution of our fighting forces. The raw militia of a young country and the patriotic recruits who marched to Pretoria would, after the crucible of two great wars, develop into seasoned troops who could hold the line in the bitter trench battles of the Korean War or maintain the peace in political hotspots such as Cyprus and the Congo. When, at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations established an international army to keep the peace, Canada began to assume a major role as peacekeeper to the world. Today, Canadian men and women continue to serve wherever peace is threatened, in crises requiring not only military expertise but patience and diplomacy. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, engravings, and paintings drawn from many collections, War and Peacekeeping tells the often neglected story of the 'little' warswhich have contributed much to our military tradition."
