"This study describes and analyses an attempt to bring about social change in a community of semi-isolated Bush-Negroes, living in the interior of the South-American state of Surinam. During the period in question (1917-1926) the Dutch colonial government tried to integrate these jungle-dwellers into the colonial scheme and thus enlarge the number of potential labour recruits by offering them education, agricultural instruction and medical aid. The attempt was carried out by a civil servant, stationed with the Djuka tribe, one oi the Bush-Negro groups which, after their importation as slaves from West-Africa, escaped from the plantations in the colony from the 17th century onwards." 21907 GROSER, John Atlantic Venture : The Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic Race. First Edition in dustjacket
Ward Lock, London, 1968, 1968
GROSER, John. Atlantic Venture : The Observer Singlehanded Transatlantic Race. London : Ward Lock & Co., (1968). First Edition. Pp (6),7-[160] + frontispiece + 22 pages of b&w photos. Many illustrations and maps in text. 8vo,blue cloth, silver lettering to spine.

Toy 1506.

A journalist's review of the first three runnings of this famous competition.

"The first Observer Single-handed Transatlantic Race conceived and devised by Lt-Col. Blondie Hasler, was won by Francis Chicester in Gypsy Moth III. In 1964 the winner was the french naval lieutenant Eric Tabarly in Pen Duick II. The 1968 winner was school teacher Geoffrey Williams in Sir Thomas Lipton. Within eight years, Hasler's idea of a single-handed crossing from England to America (thought by many to be a most painful way of attempting to commit suicide) has become an international event. No other yacht race with the possible exception of the America's cup commands so much interest and attention, or arouses such strong feelings about boat design. Atlantic Venture written by John Groser of The Observer, is a detailed record of the sailors and their yachts who set out from Plymouth last June. There's a woman angle too. The first woman to enter Edith Baumann who took her dog along for company was as the Evening Standard reported "plucked from the sea" when her yacht began to break up. The most controversial point of the Race was the relative merits of the mono-hulls and multi-hulled yachts in a trans-oceanic crossing. Atlantic Venture, though of interest to yachtsmen the world over, is not written just for the expert. It is a story of human interest to all those who find a compulsive fascination in man fighting against the most dreadful odds—in this case traversing the terrifyingly steep Atlantic stream. John Groser's book discusses the vital questions of the suitability of the yachts (and t he yachtsmen) to take part in such a Race; and also the 'ethics' of the enterprise, and the emotional and psychological problems of the thirty-five contestants." "What does it mean when thousands of middle class young Americans run away from home every year, kicking the comforts and security of the Great Society to wander through derelict ghettos, living on handouts, blowing pot, and watching the world drift by. In these extraordinary interviews the 'Flower People' generation speaks out on what they left behind and what they have found in the new underground: Maggie, the human trash can who drops any chemical offered to her; Carol, the refugee from suburbia; Harvey, who lived in the Haight-Ashbury district for 13 of his 24 years; Randy, the gay hippy merchant; and others -- intellectuals and drop-outs, pacifists and speedfreaks -- who emerge from the crowd in these intensely moving interviews. 21916 GROSSER, Morton Discovery of Neptune. First Edition in dustjacket
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1962,
GROSSER, Morton. The Discovery of Neptune. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1962. First Edition. Pp (10),1-172,(2). Index. 8vo, beige clothspine, black cloth boards, black lettering to spine. "The discovery of Nep tune, the eighth planet of the solar system, in September 1846, was regarded as a triumph of theoretical astronomy. The discovery was made by two German observers who used the data sent to them by a French astronomer. They were unaware that a young English mathematician had independently predicted almost the same position for tiie planet a short time earlier. The author ofthis fascinating historical study sketches the background of planetary ast ronomy to 1781 in a brief introductory chapter. He then describes the discovery of the planet Uranus and the "intolerable" discrepancies that arose between its observed and theoretical positions; these discrepancies were usedin calculating the position of the undiscovered perturbing planet. Two cha pters are devoted to the men who made the calculations: Urbain Jean Joseph Leverrier, whose results were sent to the Berlin Observatory and led to thediscovery of the planet, and John Couch Adams, the young Cambridge astrono mer whose work was not followed up in time by the Astronomer Royal and other observers in England. The author describes in detail the conflict that arose over priority in the prediction of the planet's position, and the degree to which it was influenced by nationalistic feeling. He concludes his narrative witn an account of Adam's and Leverrier's first meeting, their mutual admiration, and eventual firm fiendshin. This book will be of interest toasfronomers. historians, and readerswfio enjoy the history of science. It is a beautifully told story of an important event in nineteenth-century astronomv that also gives a fine insight into the sociology of science at thattime." (from the dj). "For thousands of years, the theme of creation has exerted a powerful fascination on men's minds. The re-introductionof ancient thought into western Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries inspired new writings on the old themes, designed to meet the needs and answer the questions of a new age. A work of critical importance in this tradition was the Hexaëmeron of Robert Grosseteste, a study of Genesis in the light of ancient and contemporary scientific writings. One of the products ofa period of intense intellectual activity about 1228 to 1235, the work is deeply revealing about Grosseteste's own mind." - from the rear cover. "An interpretation of each of the Ten Commandments, this work was clearly intended as a guide to working parish priests faced with the everyday problems of giving moral instruction to their flocks. It is couched in straightforward language, with many illustrations in the first and second persons singluar, but it is by no means a simple work -- Grosseteste was a demanding instructor. Judged from the manuscript tradition, this rich and rewarding work (probably dating from the early 1230s) was extremely influential. This edition is a testimony to Grosseteste's pastoral concerns, which were undoubtedly more important to him than the mind-bending, purely academical treatises for which he is better known today." - from the dust jacket. "The De Cessatione Legalium is the second volume of Robert Grosseteste's works to be published in this series. His Hexaëmeron was published in 1982, and his De Decem Mandatis will follow. Taken together, these three volumes form the most substantial body of theology written during Grosseteste's years in Oxford. Probably they all belong to the years from about 1230 to 1235 when he was lector to the Oxford Franciscans, and they have a unity of thought which marks Grosseteste's maturity as a theologian. The present volume contains the fullest exposition of his remarkably original doctrine of the Incarnation, and this alone would give it a high place among his writings."- from the dust jacket. (6),7-880. 8vo, green cloth with silver lettering to spine. Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 70.00 "This novel on the epic scale is a powerful, deeply moving and devastating depiction of a world torn apart by war and ideological tyranny. It is, as well, perhaps the most complete condemnation of totalitarianism to emerge from Russia, for the message that Vasily Grossman -- of Jewish origin and once an honored Soviet writer -- delivers is that Stalinism and Nazism, in their falsehood, cruelty, and inhumanity, closely resembled each other. As in 'War and Peace', the life of an entire society is evoked by the stories of a large number of vivid characters -- most of them connected to one family, the Shaposhnikovs -- and by a great variety of settings: domestic scenes, a physics laboratory (that of Viktor Shtrum, probably a near-portrait of the author himself), German concentration and Soviet labor camps, the battlefield of Stalingrad. The desperate struggle for this city, which became the turning point of the Second World War, is at the center of the novel. Grossman depicts it, and its effects on the lives and destinies of his characters, with Tolstoyan grandeur that finds room for intimate detail. This, along with the author's courageous attack on the ideologies of repression, underlies the importance of 'Live and Fate' as one of the great novels of the century." - from the dustjacket. GROSSMAN, Vasily. Forever Flowing. Translated from the Russian by Thomas P.Whitney. London : Andre Deutsch, (1973). First British Printing. Pp. (6),[ 1]-247,(3). 8vo, orange cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "Ivan is a political prisoner whom Stalin's death has set free after thirty years in Siberian hard labour camps. But wherever he goes in the outside world he finds that the survivors have saved their necks only by accepting a subtler, more malignant form of slavery: years of terror have destroyed their ordinary decency, leaving behind nothing but a selfish, cringing materialism. In a series of episodes of tremendous clarity and power the author dissects the corruption and demoralisation of Soviet life, skilfully intermingling his own comments with the memories and experiences of Ivan. He shows how those who went to the camps suffered degradation and death, but often retained their integrity as human beings, while those who betrayed them did not, thought remaining 'free'. He describes, in what must be the most agonising account ever written, the artificial famine of 1932-34 when the Soviet Government deliberately starved millions of Ukrainian peasants to death. And he boldly, and logically, demonstrates how Lenin, with hsi idealistic dedication to the concept of 'progress', not only continued the Czarist tradition of 'nonfreedom' but actually set the stage for the absolute tyranny of Stalin." - from the dustjacket. "The aim of this study is to determine the extent of the functioning of the ideologyof Catholicism within the ideological political trnedsuch as the national radicalism from its beginnings in the period of 1932-33 until the year 1939. Considering the great influence of Catholicism on the life and culture ofthe nation, including the political life in the time of the 2nd Republic o f Poland, it can be said that a book whcih concentrates on the Catholic aspects of the national-radical doctrines, should give the reader and almost complete picture of these doctrines. The author discusses practically all the problems which must be considered when trying to andwer the question: what varieties of nationalism were represented by the two fractions of the natioanl radicalism which were to become, later, entirely separate gropus, i.e. ONR-ABC and Falanga." - from the summary. 21932 GROVE, David I. History of Human Helminthology. First Edition
CABI CAB International , Wallingford, Oxfordshire, 1990, ISBN:0851986897 1990 0851986897
GROVE, David I. A History of Human Helminthology. (Wallingford, Oxfordshire) : CAB International, (1990). First Edition. Pp (4),v-viii,1-848 + 12-page photo-section to accompany the biographies. Thick 8vo, hardcovers.

"This detailed and comprehensive book is likely to be the standard text on the history of human helminthology for many years. It puts into historical context the work of all those who have laboured in the field of helminthology over the centuries, from early theories about the nature of worms and spontaneous generation to classification systems developed in the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, and the subsequent elucidation of detailed life cycles over the last hundred years or so. The first three chapters of the book give a general introduction, the next eight are concerned with trematodes (flukes), the next five with cestodes (tapeworms and cystic worms), the following eleven with nematodes (roundworms) and the final chapter covers miscellanea. Chapters concerned with specific worm infections begin with the discovery of the parasite and then its life cycle, followed by an historical treatment of how the clinical manifestations have been recognized, diagnostic techniques developed, treatment evolved, the epidemiology understood and preventive and control measures applied. Some 130 short biographies of key research workers, most illustrated with photographs, are also included . The book does not assume a detailed prior knowledge of helminthology and should provide fascinating insights for parasitologists, physicians and medical historians." - from rear cover.

"Eric Grove is an acknowledged authority on naval affairs and has chosen well with the classic battles of Tsushima, Jutland and Philippines Sea. These fleet actions offer important strategic lessons for current naval theorists, for modern plans and tactics are all based in principle on an age old naval concept: manoeuver your main naval units to neutralize and/or destroy the enemy's most dangerous force. This much is clear through all battles here assessed and each one represents a qualitatively different stage in naval warfare development." -from the cover. GROVE, Eric. The Future of Sea Power. (Annapolis, MD) : Naval Institute Press, (1990). First Edition. Pp (8),vii-xiii,(3),3-280,(8). Tables, diagrams.8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Eric J. Grove (b. 1948, Bolton, Lancashire). "Classical maritime strategy somestimes seems outdated today in the era of nuclear weapons, the increasing exploitation and enclosure ofthe oceans, and the internationalization of marine activities such as merc hant shipping. Eric Grove, a specialist in maritime strategy, uses his knowledge of recent history and current developments to present a fundamental reassessment of maritime strategy, relating it to the current situation and the likely future. The Future of Sea Power analyses the lessons of twentieth-century naval warfare and examines in detail the changing face of naval warfare, both in terms of the weapons used and the 'platforms' from which they are launched and controlled. The author looks at the evolving uses of the seas, both economic and military, and sets sea power against the developing world environment, political, legal, and economic, discussing those factors that stimulate nations to exert power at sea and those that limit theirnaval capabilities. Grove also develops a theoretical framework for future thinking about maritime strategy and forces, revises and updates Mahan's c lassical anayysis of the foundations of sea power, and discusses current thinking about naval tasks." - from the dj. GROVE, Eric J. Vanguard to Trident : British Naval Policy since World War II. Annapolis, MD : Naval Institute Press, (1987). First Printing. Pp. (8),ix-xi,(3),1-487,(3). Illustrated. Large 8vo, white cloth with dark blue titles to spine. "This ground-breaking new work represents the first serious attempt to analyze the influence of British politics and economics on the evolution of postwar naval policy in Great Britain. Thorough and well-documented, this study clearly demonstrates how cabinet-level decisions have shapedthe Royal Navy, its size, capabilities, and activities. The author, Eric G rove, who taught strategic studies at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth,England, for a decade, draws on recently released archival documents to de tail the British government's attempts to come to terms with the financial realities of an austere postwar world in planning a future fleet. Describedhere for the first time, for example, is the Churchill government's highly secretive process of defense review and strategic revision, after acknowle dgment that the country's defense effort had to be cut back despite growingconfrontation with the Soviet Union. In reviewing the operations of the Ro yal Navy since 1945, this book sheds new light on the Yangtze incident and British thoughts on military action against the Nationalist Chinese in China's civil war. It describes plans for military intervention in Egypt in theearly 1950s as well as British naval activities in the Korean War. In addi tion, it reveals little-known events in the Falklands some thirty years agothat presaged more recent actions there. Grove also examines the way the R oyal Navy used the Suez crisis to challenge the Duncan Sandys defense review of 1957-58 and the defense reviews of the Wilson government in the 1960s,taking a fresh look at the controversy that led to the abandonment of the aircraft carrier program. His analysis of the factors that shaped the navy of the 1970s leads to an astute discussion of the ,John Nott defense reviewof 1981 and a full account of the Falklands War. The book concludes with a valuable assessment of British naval policy today, which Grove argues is a t a major crossroad. Among the many illustrations that accompany the text are some fascinating drawings, reproduced here for the first time, of projected warships that never proceeded beyond the design stage." from the dj flap. "During the 1980s NATO had beenmore explicit than ever before about how it planned to fight at sea should the Alliance fail in its primary purpose of deterrence. This led to much d ebate about a 'new' Maritime Strategy emphasising forward operations in theNorwegian Sea. In Battle for the Fiørds Eric Grove describes the reality o f forward operations as excised [sic] during September 1988 in Exercise 'Teamwork'. "At twenty-four years of age - tall, fair, and blue-eyed son of Scandinavian father and Scots mother -- widely travelled, well-read, fluent in six languages - accustomed to the society of cultured friends in the great capital cities of the world -- young, brilliant, rich, a skilful spender -- Suddenly penniless! The bitter dregs of friendly pseudo-sympathy -- the urge to seek success abroad - the first shock of America -- the weary quest for work -- waiter's assistant in a cheap restaurant -- And then the long Search all over the continent for the America of the immigrant's dreams, for the ideals and the vaunted freedom, for the Abraham Lincolns. Throuh it all, the cities and factories, the harvest-fields and the open road, through the sufferings and questionings of youth, there comes gradually a vision of America's true ideals and an understanding of the American way of life.

The story of the coming of the European has been written. Stark truth tears the veil from the bitter experiences through which pass so many of America's new citizens. The story is epic." - from the dustjacket.

"The purpose of this work is to present a phonemically accurate, practical spelling system of Kwakw'ala, the language of the Kwgulh (Kwakiutl) people of coastal British Columbia. The orthography has been designed primarily so thatit provides maximal transference of sound/symbol recognition from English to Kwakw'ala, and so that it can be typed on a standard English typewriter without the use of special symbols. The first section deals with the use ofthe practical orthography, going from the most familiar phonemes/symbols t o the least familiar. The second section is a two-way, cross-indexed dictionary: English - Kwakw'ala, consisting of approximately 12,000 entries, and Kwakw'ala - English, of about 4,000 entries. The dictionary is more an exemplification of the use of the writing system than it is an exhaustive studyof the language." - from the abstract. "A Long Way from Home is the first comprehensive account of the tub erculosis epidemic among the Inuit in the mid-part of this century. The Inuit were victims not only of the epidemic but also of the Canadian government's shockingly slow response and lack of consideration for their culture. Focusing on patients' experiences and the programs set up to deal with the epidemic, rather than a purely medical discussion of the disease and treatment, a voice is given to those involved and a human face to the bare statistics. Based on recollections of patients, interviews with participants in government programs, available literature and statistics, and records of the Northern Affairs Program, Pat Grygier examines the programs for the Inuit in all parts of Canada. Background information on tuberculosis in Canada, conditions of life in the North at the time for both Inuit and non-Natives, and the development and modification of government administration of the North are also covered. " (from the dj). Contents : Part One - Setting the Scene. 1. A brief history of tuberculosis in Canada. 2. The Inuit people and the Arctic. 3. Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 1965,
GUBSER, Nicholas J. The Nunamiut Eskimos : Hunters of Caribou. New Haven and London : Yale University Press, 1965. First Edition. Pp (8),ix-xv,(1),1-384. Maps, figures in text. 8vo, blue cloth spine with gilt lettering, blue paper-covered boards. Falk, Alaska History: An Annotated Bibliography 166; Tourville, Alaska, A Bibliography 1875, Moore & Purcell, Pacific Northwest Americana 1949-1974 S1041, Ricks' Alaska Bibliography p.114. "Not many authors have had the opportunity to study a primitive people so intimately as Mr. Gubser, who lived with the Nunamiut in the Alaskan arctic for ffteen months. His resulting etnnographic study of one of the few remaining hunting peoples of the world is a personal, fresh, and authentic account. These Eskimos are dependent upon hunting, and their complete invoivement with the caribou in a severe, marginal arctic environment is reflected in various dimensions of their history, social organization, and intellectual life. The author's thesis is that their emmpiricism, combined with their belief in in the supernatural and their anthropomorphism, has enabled this valiant small band to adapt itselt effectively to the rigorous conditions in the Brooks range. The author has written a warm account of a society in a changing milieu as it grapples with the problem of existence in what they call "a hungry country." The changes in the Nunamiut economy since World War II have been notable, and this book is particularly valuable as a record of life among atribe which has no writing, as it was and as it is from the "Nunamiut poin t of view."
