(4),[v]-ix,(1),[1]-396,(2). 8vo, photo-illustrated grey card covers with red and black lettering to front cover and spine. "During the American Civil War, Toronto, Montreal, St. Catharines and Halifax welcomed a well-financed network of Confederate spies and adventurers, bringing the war close to home with organized raids on Lake Erie and the border town of St. Albans, Vermont, where Confederate raiders were successfully defended by prominent Quebec politician J.C. Abbott, a future prime minister. Montreal's St. Lawrence Hall Hotel had so many Confederates living there it offered mint juleps on its menu. It also afforded visits by John Wilkes Booth, who made several trips there and to Toronto as part of an organized plot leading up to the Good Friday 1865, assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps the most lasting impact on Canada was Sir John A. Macdonald's conviction that strong states' rights were 'that great source of weakness,' which led to the war. That's why Canada emerged in 1867 with a strong federal government -- including an unelexted Senate -- which to this day fosters endless debate betwen the believers of federal rights and provincial rights." - from the rear cover. Edwin Palmer Hoyt (b. August 5, 1923, Portland, Oregon - d. July 29, 2005, Tokyo, Japan) military and naval historian.

"Here is the story of the dramatic role played by aircraft carriers in historic battles and maneuvers from the start of World War II to current encounters in the Persian Gulf. Spanning fifty years, this colorful chronicle is drawn from a wealth of previously untapped sources including accounts from American, European, and Japanese archives. Fast-paced battle stories - recreating behind-the-scenes actions as well as gripping combat sequences - are highlighted by sharp eyewitness accounts.

Noted military historian Edwin P. Hoyt describes the naval preparations that set the stage for World War II; how Japan's early lead in carrier strategy was undermined as early as Pearl Harbor, subsequently at Midway, and finally by inferior pilot training and manufacturing capacity; how the undervalued escort carrier sealed the fate of the German U-boat; how the powerful American fleet was nearly undone by the desperately heroic kamikazes; and how carrier warfare nas evolved in recent decades, contributing to engagements in Korea, Indochina, the Falklands, and the Middle East.

Here, brought vividly to life, are the triumphs and tragedies of important battles, the strategies of admirals both great and weak, the politics that so often charted battle plans, and the valiant efforts of sailors and pilots aboard these historic vessels. Once again, Edwin Hoyt achieves a vital and perceptive work of popular history." - from the dust jacket.

25833 HRON, Madelaine. Translating Pain : Immigrant Suffering in Literature and Culture. First Edition in dustjacket.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2009, ISBN:9780802099198 2009 080209919X
HRON, Madelaine. Translating Pain : Immigrant Suffering in Literature and Culture. Toronto : University of Toronto Press, (2009). First Edition. Pp [i]-xix,(1),[1]-300. Index. 8vo, red cloth, black lettering to spine.

“In the post-Cold War, post-9/11 era, the immigrant experience has changed dramatically. Despite the recent successes of immigrant and world literatures, there has been little scholarship on how the hardships of immigration are conveyed in immigrant narratives. Translating Pain fills this gap by examining literature from Muslim North Africa, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe to reveal the representation of immigrant suffering in fiction.

Applying immigrant psychology to literary analysis, Madelaine Hron examines the ways in which different forms of physical and psychological pain are expressed in a wide variety of texts. She juxtaposes post-colonial and post-communist concerns about immigration, and contrasts Muslim world views with those of Caribbean creolité and post-Cold War ethics. Demonstrating how pain is translated into literature, she explores the ways in which it also shapes narrative, culture, history, and politics. A compelling and accessible study, Translating Pain is a groundbreaking work of literary and postcolonial studies.” (from the dj).

25836 HSIN-NUNG, Yao INGALLS, Jeremy, trans. Malice of Empire First Edition in dustjacket.
University of California Press, Berkeley and Ls Angeles, 1970,
HSIN-NUNG, Yao. The Malice of Empire. Translated and with an Introduction by Jeremy Ingalls. Berkeley and Los Angeles : University of California Press, 1970. First Edition. Pp (10),11-160. 8vo, red cloth, silver letering to spine, top edge dyed red. "Jeremy Ingalls' translation of 'The Malice of Empire' makes available internationally a work already famous both in the literature and politics of East Asia. Also it is believed to be the first translation into English of a modern Chinese play. Three years before Anouilh's'Antigone' was celebrated in Western Europe as an attack in Greek disguise upon Nazi arrogance, 'The Malice of Empire' (Chinese title 'Ch'ing-kung Yuan) began its long run in Shanghai and was seen as challenging not only the Japanese occupation forces in China but also the tyranny of Mao Tse-tung and the Chinese communists. 'The Malice of Empire' presents a dramatic episode in Chinese history which will be familiar to many Western readers, for its theme is the exciting and desperate struggle between the ageing Empress Dowager and the young Emperor, in the closing years of the nineteenth century, for control over the vast and divided Chinese empire. But readers encountering 'The Malice of Empire' in English for the first time will recognise,as millions of Chinese have continued to recognise over a period of thirty years, that this play is concerned with more than history. It is a theatri cally brilliant exposition of the psychology of tyranny and a work of perennial significance not only for China but for all mankind." (from the dj). 25868 HUBER, Max TEMPLE, William, foreword KELLER, Adolf, intro. Good Samaritan. : Reflections on the Gospel and Work in the Red Cross. First Edition in dustjacket

HUBER, Max. The Good Samaritan : Reflections on the Gospel and Work in the Red Cross. With a Foreword by William Temple, and an Introduction by Adolf Keller. London : Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1945. First Edition. Pp (4),5-77,(3).8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "For Christians, there is a stri king parallel between this basic conception of the Red Cross and the parable of the Good Samaritan— there is the same indifference to the race, creed or merit of the person who needs one's help, and the same selfless love of humanity. [...] This is the spirit that lies behind the work of the Red Cross in the present war, which has brought to the organisation more problems and difficulties than it has ever nad to face before. Professor Huber [President of the International Red Cross] is concerned, not so much with the functions of the National, as with those of the International, Red Cross, which, in its dealings with the belligerent governments, is performing a task the value of which one cannot even begin to assess. Here the necessity to be non-party and non-theological is obvious, for clearly, if it were otherwise, the organisation could not win the confidence of both sides. The calls on it are boundless, and quite disproportionate either to its resources or to its capacities. At the same time this very fact gives it a kind of advantage, for obviouslv it cannot pledge itself to any long-term comtnitments, and therefore has a freedom and flexibility which it would otherwise lack."(from the dj). Contents : 1. Fundamental Questions. 2. The Red Cross in Re lation to Christianity and the Evolution of Western Thought. 3. The Parableof the Good Samartan. 4. Charity in Relation to Reforms and Institutions. 5. Ethical Problems in Red Cross Work. Spine and margins sunned, else very good in sunned, torn and smudged dusjacket. Uncommon. 25.00

Clarke, Irwin & Company Limited, Toronto / Vancouver, 1978, ISBN:0772012202
HUBERT, Cam. Dreamspeaker and Tem Eyos Ki and the Land Claims Question. Toronto / Vancouver : Clarke, Irwin & Company Limited, (1978). First Edition. Pp. (6),1-137,(1). 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Cam Hubert" was for a time the name of Barbara Anne Cameron (b. August 20, 1938 in Nanaimo, British Columbia) Canadian novelist, poet, screenwriter and short story writer, now better known as Anne Cameron. "Dreamspeaker, [pp.1-85] the original novella of the award-winning CBC film, tells the stark and moving story of a young boy's life. Committed to an institution for delinquent boys, eleven-year-old Peter is uncommunicative and tough. A neglected child, he lives in constant fear of an unnamed evil that pursues and threatens him. Finally it drives him to escape. On the run, he encounters an old Indian, the Dreamspeaker, and his companion He Who Would Sing. With the support and faith of the two men and their belief in the powers of the Indian spirit world, he finally faces his fears. But inevitably the outside world brutally intrudes. Tem Eyos Ki and the Land Claims Question [pp.87-137] is an extraordinary, often hilarious monologue. Tem Eyos Ki, a garrulous young Indian woman, tells us in her distinctive and colourful style the story of her discovery of strength and faith as a leader among her people." - from the dj.
