JANES, Percy. House of Hate. Toronto and Montreal : McClelland and Stewart Limited, (1970). First Edition. Pp (8),9-320. 8vo, black cloth, silver lettering to spine.

O'Dea 4558,DNLB pp.175-6, ENL III:98-99, Spadoni & Donnely 2182, Laugher p.261.

Percy Maxwell Janes (b. March 12, 1922, St. John's, Newfoundland - d. February 19, 1999, St. John's, Newfoundland).

"With great skill and sensitivity, Percy Janes has written what in time will be regarded as a classic of its kind. In this, his first novel, the author's childhood and early manhood in a small milltown on Newfoundland's West Coast are dramatized and he presents a collective portrait of a labouring family between the two world wars.

'This book is a work of fiction, a work of art, in a very real sense,' Percy Janes writes. 'It is based on my own family experience, but I have added, subtracted, altered, arranges, and invented, in order to stress the theme of my novel, which is the destructive force of hate within a family.'

"Percy Janes writes directly about his father in the character of Saul Stone - a man as hard as his name; with warmth about his mother, Gertrude; and with mingled fascination and regret about his four brothers, each of whom in his own way succumbed to the force of hate within this family; and about his sister, who somehow managed to escape these horrors. Seldom has an author dealt so openly with his early years. House of Hate is about overpowering pain and the perception of the himan condition that pain brings with it." - from the dustjacket.

In her House, Janzen constructs stories of interiority in the house of the psyche, the body, the book. Rigorous in curiosity and intellect, Janzen's poems are a delicate conversation between thetruth of things as they are and things as they are imagined. They witness the violence and innocence of thoughts and actions stripped of generative power or constrained by pernicious fates, irresistible choices, and the intractable wills of domestic gods. Pp (2),[1]-257,(1). Illustrated. Index.8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “The Bullnose Morris, so called on account of its shapely radiator, was a remarkable car. It was created b y a humble craftsman and brought to Lord Nuffield (as he became) fame and afortune which enabled him to give away astronomical sums of money to deser ving causes. William Morris, as he was, set out to mass-produce motor-cars in England as Henry Ford had produced the model-T-Ford by the million in America. But although it was made in enormous numbers, the Morris remained a car of character, endearing itself to its staunch owners by the whine of its gears and the squeal of its brakes as well as by its low price and honestspecification. [...] The Bullnose Morris was a car which moulded motoring history. Now two reliable motoring historians have documented its career, from the first pre-World War One light cars to the many versions, private, commercial and even sporting, which entrenched it as a gigantic financial success almost to the end of the vintage era.” - from the dj. JARMAN, W.D. "Jim." Those Wallowing Beauties: The Story of Landing Barges in World War II. Lewes, Sussex: Book Guild, (1997). Pp. (i)-xvi, 1-263, [1].Illustrated with black and white photos, drawings and facsimiles of docume nts. 8vo, blue cloth covering with gold lettering to spine. From the insideflap: "D-Day was a logistical achievement of unprecedented complexity. In 1944, with every available naval vessel already committed to the invasion, the task of transporting the hundreds of tons of vehicles, ammunition, fuel, supplies and field weapons across the channel seemed impossible. How could the vital support for the Allied forces be established and maintained? In1942, with the possibility of the fall of Stalingrad, demand was growing f or a second European front. There was, however, a serious shortage of landing craft. Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten requisitioned over a thousand Thames barges. Some four hundred were commandeered by the Royal Navy when they were converted, many provided with ramps, armed, and motorized. They were manned by 'volunteers', of whom many were previously Thames lightermen. The sole objective of these unlikely craft was the support of a seaborne invasion. This book is a valuable historical document, carefully organized and meticulously researched, offering an excellent insight into a little known aspect of the Second World War. The inclusion of the many extracts from veterans' own experiences add colourful authenticity to the work." Chapters: 1. Normandy 1994; 2. Early days; 3. HMS Collingwood; 4. HMS Lochailort; 5. 27261 JARRETT, Dudley British Naval Dress. First Edition in dustjacket.
J.M. Dent and Sons, London, 1960, 1960
JARRETT, Dudley. British Naval Dress. With a colour plate and over one hundred black-and-white illustrations. London : J.M. Dent and Sons Ltd, (1960). First Edition. Pp (6),vii--xi,(1),1-148 + colour frontispiece. Illustrated throughout with drawings, b&w photos, and b&w reproductions of works of art. Index. 8vo, pale blue cloth with pictorial device to front, black lettering to spine, top edge dyed black.

A delightfully illustrated look at the evolution of British naval uniforms from the early eighteenth century to the time of publication.

“This book deals authoritatively with the development of naval uniforms from the dress of the civilian landsman roughly adapted to meet the needs of life at sea to the monkey-jacket and zip-fastening coat-style jumper of today's Royal Navy.

Extracts from slop seller's contracts and Admiralty memoranda will be found in their place but this is no dull compilation of orders, instructions and regulations. Mention is made of Nelson's purchase of his first epaulets, of Lord Saint Vincent's method of punishing irregularly dressed officers, of how the ship's company of the Antelope set about making frocks and trousers and of the 1917 Wren's reaction to her sailor collar.

The illustrations and text are closely related. Crude representations of early seamen in petticoat-breeches, superb paintings of flag officers in the ornate splendour of their full dress, photographs of crumpled-looking Victorians and streamlined modern seamen have been brought together. Clear line-drawings by the author have been used mainly to supply material unsuited to photography.

This generous use of illustration not only makes clear details which it would have been tedious to describe in writing, but helps greatly to re-create the atmosphere of the periods concerned. ” - from the dj.

A bibliophile all h is life, he began by espousing bookbinding as his chosen profession and after studying in Paris he returned to Toronto to set up as a bookbinder in 1928. But this was only one part of his life, and while in Paris his interestin music and painting had grown and matured. In 1936 the Picture Loan Soci ety was founded and Duncan, at first one of the Committee, soon became solely responsible for it. It is in this capacity that his influence was greatest: literally hundreds of Canadian artists owe to him, in some measure, a debt of gratitude for sound advice, encouragement, and help generously given." - from the dj. With maps and illustrations in the text. Thick 8vo, tan cloth, bluelettering to spine. "in an exploration of the oceanic connections of the A tlantic world, Michael J. Jarvis recovers a mariner's view of early Americaas seen through the eyes of Bermuda's seafarers. The first social history of eighteenth-century Bermuda, this book profiles how one especially intensive maritime community capitalized on its position 'in the eye of all trade.' Jarvis takes readers aboard small Bermudian sloops and follows white andenslaved sailors as they shuttled cargoes between ports, raked salt, harve sted timber, salvaged shipwrecks, hunted whales, captured prizes, and smuggled contraband in an expansive maritime sphere spanning Great Britain's North American and Caribbean colonies. In doing so, he shows how humble sailors and seafaring slaves operating small family-owned vessels were significant but underappreciated agents of Atlantic integration. The American Revolution starkly revealed the extent of British America's integration before 1775 as it shattered interregional links that Bermudians had helped to forge. Reliant on North America for food and customers, Bermudians faced disaster at the conflict's start. A bold act of treason enabled islanders to continue trade with their rebellious neighbors and helped them to survive and evenprosper in an Atlantic world at war." from the dj. Index. 8vo, green cloth (imitation leather, gilt lettering to front board and spine. “The chances of survival for an infantry subaltern in a rifle company during the campaign in North West Europe were slim. Most survived for a few weeks. Sydney Jary survived ten months from July 1944 when he took command of 18 Platoon of the 4th Battalion, The Somerset Light Infantry in Normandy until the war ended for them near Bremen in early May 1945. But this book is not the war memoirs of a lucky and experienced juniorofficer. It is the biography of 18 Platoon and the story of the loyalties and friendships which created – from a collection of individuals formed by random selection and survival – a unique identity which survived ten monthsof bitter fighting and which still survives today.” - from the dj. (6),[vii]-x,(2),[3]-194, + 36 p. of photos and reproductions. Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, illustrated green card covers with white and grey lettering to front cover and spine. "Europeans in the nineteenth century were fascinated with the wild and the primitive. So compelling was the craving for a first-hand experience of wilderness that it provided a lasting foundation for tourism as a consumer industry. In this book, Patricia Jasen shows how the region now known as Ontario held special appeal for tourists seeking to indulge a passion for wild country or act out their fantasties of primitive life. Niagara Falls, the Thousand Ilsnads, Muskoka, and the far reaches of Lake Superior all offered the experiences tourists valued most: the tranquil pleasures of the picturesque, the excitement of the sublime, and the sensations of nostalgia associated with Canada's disappearing wilderness." - from the introductory preamble. Contents: 1. Introduction: Nature, Culture, and Tourism: Tourists, Travellers, and the Semiotics of Tourism -- Tourism and Romanticism -- Tourism and Colonialism -- Who's Speaking? Class, Gender, and the Nature of Travel Narrative. 2. Taming Niagara: Terror and Transcendence -- The Romantic Itinerary -- Doing Niagara, or Niagara Undone. 3. The author travelled extensively in Canada and in the West Indies and the photographic reproductions include those of sights and scenes to be found in rural Ontario, Old Quebec, the Gaspé Peninsula, the Maritime seaboard, and the Caribbean Sea. There are exquisite studies in child photography and nature scenes, while the examples of the camera applied to industry are as exciting as they are revealing. . . . 27296 JEANNERET, Marsh God and Mammon : Universities as Publishers. First Edition in dustjacket
Macmillan of Canada, 1989, 1989 0771592051
JEANNERET, Marsh. God and Mammon : Universities as Publishers. Toronto : Macmillan of Canada, (1989). First Edition. Pp. (8),[ix]-xi,(1),[1]-369,(3). Illustration in the text including portrait frontispiece of the author by Karsh. 8vo, red cloth, black lettering to spine.

Marsh Jeanneret (b. 1917, Toronto - d. August 1990, King City, Ontario) entered publishing as a traveller in textbooks for Copp Clark Co. Limited, and was the First Canadian to be elected president of the Association of American University Presses.

Much on the history of the University of Toronto Press.

"Why have so many of the world's great universities universities established their own publishing imprints? How do university presses help to advance learning throughout the world - and how have they been misused when their parent institutions have called on them to become something thev were not intended to be the first place? These are questions Marsh Jeanneret, for almost twenty-five years the Director of the University of Toronto Press, ponders throughout this entertaining account of his publishing career.

God and Mammon overflows with anecdotes about the many world-famous authors, editors, and publishers with whom he worked at home and abroad. But it is much more than an account of the birth during those years of such landmark works as the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Marshall McLuhan's The Gutenberg Galaxy, William Lyon Mackenzie King's official biography, Lester Pearson's memoirs, and countless other scholarly productions of lasting value to the academic world. It was a time when his press also issued many works of public and professional interest such as the highly successful volumes of photographs by Yousuf Karsh, a broad assortment ot widely used trade and business directories, a variety of works of general non-fiction, and even a number of textbooks for student use. The author tells how university press publishing at Toronto, as at many scholarly presses, became a race to offset the cost of producing learned books and journals by squeezing profits from a simultaneous program of commercial publishing and printing - an unending struggle between serving "God" and "Mammon". This is a vigorous indictment of the many universities on this continent which operate learned presses but have encouraged them to fulfill their scholarly mission by becoming quasi- commercial enterprises first." - from the dj.
