27409 JENNINGS, Sarah Art and Politics : The History of the National Arts Centre.
Dundurn Press, Toronto, 2009, ISBN:9781550028867 2009 1550028863
JENNINGS, Sarah. Art and Politics : The History of the National Arts Centre. Toronto : Dundurn Press, (2009). First Printing. Pp [1]-426,(2),+ 16 pp colour plates. Illustrated. Index. Large 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

"Art and Politics is the story of the creation and first four decades of one of Canada's pre-eminent cultural organizations. While it documents the history of Canada's National Arts Centre in Ottawa, it also tells the story of the arts in Canada from the 1960s to 2006. The story breaks down into three parts: the years of creation and early growth, fuelled by the talent and resources generated by Canada's 1967 centennial celebration; the turbulent middle years, marked by a dearth of funds and political disinterest;and finally the "renaissance," when the decision is made to restore and re cast the organization to provide continuing benefit to the performing arts in Canada's capital and the country at large.

Written in a documentary style, moving from episode to episode, the story is enriched by the personal memories of those who participated in it, including the leading artists, managers, officials, and politicians who were involved." - from the dj.

27416 JENSEN, Johannes V. BODELSEN, C.A., intro.]. BATHGATE, Ronald, trans.]. Waving Rye. Ryerson edition in dustjacket.
Ryerson Press, Toronto, 1958,

(6),[7]-153,(7). 8vo, blue cloth with gilt lettering to front board and spine. "Johannes V. Jensen was the greatest Danish writer of the first half of the 20th century. He was born in 1873 and died in 1950. His work, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1944, consists in poems, novels and essay. Some of his novels have been translated into English, notably the sequence called 'The Long Journey', which deals with six successive stages of the evolution of mankind, and 'The Fall of the King', the scene of which is Denmark and Sweden during the wars f the early 16th cntury. Some of his poems have been translated into English by R.P. Keigwin. But his best and most characteristic work has hitherto remained practically inaccessible to the English-speaking public. This consists in what he called 'myths', a prose form in which he aimed at giving, in his own words, 'those short glimpses of the essence of things that illuminate man and time'. Some of his myths would nowadays beregarded as short stories; others are attempts to catch the atmosphere and mood of landscapes or remembered incidents. In their most characteristic f orm they are midway between prose-poems and essays. This work is the first in the series of translations published under the auspices of the Council of Europe in order to make available to a wider public literary masterpieceswritten in the lesser known European languages." - from the dustjacket. In cludes the following stories: "The Waving Rye", "Trio", "Our Lady", "The Greatest Sorrow", "The Windmill", "The Old Clock", "Danse Macabre", "Olivia Marianne", "The Banks of Life", "Did They Catch the Ferry?", "Yellow Tulips", "A. Illustrated throughout. Oblong 8vo, art-illustrated white cardcovers with blue spine, white & yellow lettering to spine. Latham B. "Yogi" Jenson (b. 1921, Calgary - 2005). An adoptive Nova Scotian's reflections on his varied naval experience in World War Two, including service in HMS Renown, Matabele, and Hood, in corvettes on the North Atlantic , and in destroyers in support of the Normandy landings. Illustrated with dozens of Jenson's detailed and evocative line drawings. "Tin Hats, Oilskins & Seaboots tells the story of the wartime naval career of one of Nova Scotia's favourite author / artists. L.B. Jenson was born in Calgary in 1921. As a boy growing up on the Prairies in the Depression, he dreamed of going to sea, became a sea cadet at HMS Undaunted in Calgary, and in 1938 joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an officer cadet, training with the Royal Navy in Britain until 1941. His wartime service began on HMS Renown inthe South Atlantic, searching for the Graf Spee, and off Norway engaging t he battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. He lost all his possessions when Renown was damaged by shellfire. He served on HMS Matabele and HMS Hood, leaving that ship weeks before she was sunk with all hands in battle with theBismarck. Returning to Canada in late 1941, he was appointed to HMCS Ottaw a, a destroyer on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. A year later she was sunk with great loss of life in a battle with German submarines." - from the rear cover, Surviving this, he joined the destroyer Niagara on convoy duty before going to HMCS Algonquin, one of the first ships to open firein the Normandy invasion. The book is illustrated with Jenson's line drawi ngs, as well as sketches and diagrams of uniforms, insignia and so on. It is a valuable record not only of how ships fought the battles of the Atlantic, but of life on board, where men had to live under difficult conditions for weeks on end - all seen through the eyes of an energetic and engaging young officer. June 8, 1857 London) was an English dramatist and prolific writer. This work was a comic series, originally published in Punch magazine. One signature protruding, else very good with bright gilt. 150.00 The beginning of the first lecture: "You ought to be very rich, Mr. Caudle. I wonder who'd lend you five pounds? But so it is: a wife may work and may slave! Ha, dear! the many things that might have been done with five pounds. As if people picked up money in the street! But you always were a fool, Mr. Caudle! I've wanted a black satin gown these three years, and that five pounds would have entirely bought it. But it's no matter how I go,—not at all. Everybody says I don't dress as becomes your wife—and I don't; but what's that to you, Mr. Caudle? Nothing. Oh, no!you can have fine feelings for everybody but those belonging to you. I wis h people knew you, as I do—that's all. You like to be called liberal—and your poor family pays for it. "All the girls want bonnets, and where they're to come from I can't tell. This time a second major character comes along on the voyage: the "Pilot of Pin ta" whom Slocum mentions hallucinating into being.[...] What makes Slocum'sstory unique is his miraculous resurrection of himself, beginning with his rebuilding of Spray, the derelict oyster sloop which will carry him around the world. As the solo voyage unfolds, the heedless adventurism of his ear ly life is contrasted with the heighten consciousness blossoming in him as he completes his historic journey. Soul Voyage captures the very essence ofSlocum and his life-long obsession for the sea." -from the cover. Vg. 12.5 0.

Tales by the late Nova Scotian author (b. January 11, 1925, Sydney, Cape Breton (growing up in the neighbourhood of Whitney Pier) - d. December 9, 2013, Halifax).

"Maybe it's the fascinating history, the secretive landscape, or the traditional love of storytelling, but it seems like everybody has a mysterious Maritime tale to tell. Skeptical? Just wait until you encounter the phantom bride of Egan House, the ghostly presence in the Cellar restaurant, or the poltergeist in a Trenton home.

" More Maritime Mysteries chronicles haunting tales both well-known and unknown - disappearing ships' crews, inexplicable voices, terrifying apparitions, buried treasure, and more. The otherworldy characters in these pages vary from harmful to helpful, persistent to perverse, historical to heroic, despondent to destructive. They lurk in some of the most unexpected places - perhaps your favourite restaurant, perhaps that rickety old dwelling down the street, or perhaps . . . around the very next corner you turn.."- rear cover.

"Handicrafts and the Logic of 'Commercial Antimodernism' : The Nova Scotia Case" by Ian McKay, (pp 117-129). "Antimodernism is a term used to describe the international reaction to the onslaught of the modern world that swept across industrialized Western Europe, North America, and Japan in the decades around the turn of the twentieth century. Scholarsin art history, anthropology, political science, history, and feminist med ia studies explore antimodernism as an artistic response to a perceived sense of loss - in particular, the loss of 'authentic' experience. Embracing the 'authentic' as a redemptive antidote to the threat of unheralded economic and social change, antimodernism sought out experience supposedly embodied in pre-industrialized societies - in medieval communities or 'oriental cultures,' in the Primitive, the Traditional, or Folk. In describing the waysin which modern artists used antimodern constructs in formulating their wo rk, the contributors examine the involvement of artists and intellectuals in the reproduction and diffusion of these concepts. In doing so they revealthe interrelation of fine art, decorative art, souvenir or tourist art, an d craft, questioning the ways in which these categories of artistic expression reformulate and naturalise social relations in the field of cultural production. Pp (6),[vii]-ix,(3),1-63,(1). 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt letering to spine. Contents : 1. A Look Before a Leap into World Government. 2. Inernational Guaranty of Democratic Government. "His Claremont lectures, delivered in the wake of the crisis of Britain's withdrawal from Greece and of American responsibility under the Truman doctrine, are especially illuminating in their survey of world government projects of the past and of the present. World government is acknowledged as an ideal and ultimate goal but not as an immediately attainable objective. Professor Jessup notes that constitution-makingis the last and not the first step in establishing a political community. If it is tried too soon it emphasizes preexisting discord instead of creating new harmony. He points out that vast numbers of the world's peoples are still too politically illiterate to be able to choose by popular processes a world assembly. Drawing on the experience of the government of the UnitedStates, he analyzes the basic structural and operational problems of inter national organization." (from the dj). JHABVALA, Ruth Prawer. Poet and Dancer. New York : Doubleday, (March 1993).First Printing. Pp (8),1-199,(1). 8vo, red cloth spine, red paper-covered boards, gilt lettering to spne. "Angel is dark and plain, introverted and submissive, a spontaneous composer of childish verses, wholly consumed by the wild, seductive spell of her cousin Lara - a beautiful, irresponsible creature who expresses herself in free-form dance. What begins as a tender andintimate attachment between two young girls deepens in adulthood into some thing complex and perilous, as Lara's life spins in increasingly erratic circles while Angel's passionate devotion to her remains undiminished. It is a feverish and impenetrable relationship, of reckless master and willing slave, one forged to shield both Angel and Lara from the harshness of their surroundings, as well as from the far greater terrors of the self. It is a relationship that will end up in terror for the young women, mand for their families. Set against the vivrid, dreamlike landscape of Manhattan in the recent past, Poet and Dancer is an altogether unforgettable novel written with the subtlety, wry humor, and beauty that are the hall marks ot one of theworld's leading novelists and storytellers." from the dj. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, CBE (b. May 7, 1927, Cologne, Germany – d. April 3, 2013, New York City) was a German-born British and American novelist.

A collection of nine short stories by the Indian author.

"The nine stories in A Stronger Climate represent her second collection. Once again she proves her mastery as she probes Indian sociey, revealing its comedy, its pathos, and its gentle resistance.

All the stories are about Europeans in India. India. The first section is called The Seekers, and is primarily about people who look to India for something that Europe has failed to give them. They are attracted by the stronger climate, the stronger colors, the, stronger personalities they find in India. They want to enrich themselves emotionally or spiritually. [...]

The second section, The Sufferers, is about the Europeans who have stayed too long. Everything they once found beautiful and fascinating has turned sour. They are experiencing the bitterness of being old in a country they now discover to be implacably alien to them.

Perhaps what all the stories in this volume say, finally, is that the Indian climate is not only stronger than that which Europeans are accustomed to; it is in the long run more than they are constitutionally able to bear. " from the dj.

27494 JHABVALA, Ruth Prawer Householder. First Edition in dustjacket
John Murray, London, 1960,
JHABVALA, Ruth Prawer. The Householder. London : John Murray, (1960). FirstUK Printing. Pp (6),7-[192]. 8vo, light blue cloth with blue lettering to spine. "There are few novelists using India as a background who treat theircharacters entirely as people and not as part of a political or philosophi cal interpretation of the contemporary scene. Mrs. Jhabvala has already established a reputatio for her novels on Indian life and in The Householder she is concerned with the emergence of Prem from his comparatively carefree student life living at home, to the status of teacher, husband and householder. Prem is a Hindi teacher at school ln Delhi, uncertain of himmself, unable to keep order amongst the boys, harassed over financial probleiems and uncertain as to how to treat a a young wife, who has been chosen for him byhis family. He is full of doubts about his ability as a teacher, determine d to ask for an increase in salary, yet easily defeated over coming to the point by the school principal and his aggressive wife. He is no more successful when he at last manages to tell his friendly landlord that he cannot afford so high a rent. He tries to confide in friends, but they are all too concerned in toeir own affairs, even his student , Raj, seems almost a stranger. Prem's wife, expecting their first child, appears to defy him by visiting her family , leaving him with his mother as in his student days. When she returns he suddenly knows he is at last a householder. Mrs Jhabvala's characterization is strong. She writes with subtlety and wit, using these with great effect in three-sided conversations of comic cross purpose. She gives a vivid picture of life in an Indian city which is most engaging and convincing." - from the dj. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, CBE (b. May 7, 1927, Cologne, Germany – d. "A young man named Henry sits down with his grandmother, a genial lady still called Baby by everyone, in her Manhattan townhouse where he has lived all his life, to record the history of a spiritual movement that has woven itself into the fabric of their family's lives for four generations. What unfolds is a mesmerizing family saga: the imperious great-grandmother Elsa and her husband, an Indian poet, whose marriage is as unconventional as the movement they help to found; Baby, their cheerfully pragmatic daughter, married to the aloof English diplomat Graeme; bemused and brooding Renata, Baby and Graeme's daughter, marriedto an idle dreamer; and finally Henry, Renata's son, who in many ways bear s the legacy of all that has gone before. Their lives--and that of the movement's elusive yet ineluctable founder, known only as the Master--intertwine, diverge, and collide with each other in a masterfully orchestrated storyspanning the twentieth century and several continents. By turns brilliantl y satiric, insightful, and profoundly moving, Shards of Memory is a beautifully wrought tale of love and devotion, of family and faith, and of the complex nature of memory itself - -a literary tour de force from one of the most distinguished novelists of our time." - from the dj. Pp (10),[11]-384. 8vo, white cloth spine, grey paper-covered boards, gilt lettering to spine. "Harriet and Michael Wishwell are nineteen-year-old twins who have inherited a considerable fortune from their old, established American family. But they are not interested in money or possessions and want something far better than what their family - especially their divorced, childishly selfish parents—can offer them. When Michael meets the leaders of a new world movement called Transcendent al Internationalism, he thinks he has found what he and his sister have been searching for. The leader of the movement is the Rawul, an Indian prince with a dubious title and a derelict little kingdom. He is supported by a splendidly handsome adventuress known as the Rani—another dubious title—and by their adopted son, Crishi, of murky origins but charismatic charm. Michael and Harriet become deeply involved with these three powerful personalities—Michael because he believes in their movement for world unity and Harrietbecause she is in love with Crishi. Surrendering themselves and their fort une, they join the group of devoted disciples and follow their new family first to England and then to India. Their allegiance doesn't waver even whenit becomes increasingly clear that he leaders are engaged in suspect and e ven criminal activities. It is not until they get to India that Michael, finding that his selfless devotion is being exploited for unworthy ends, becomes disillusioned and wants to turn back and go home, taking his sister with him. But by this time Harriet has so entirely given herself over to Crishi that she is ready to sacrifice everything for him, maybe even her own life, or her brother's. The reader, who has long realized that the choices Harriet is making can end in disaster, watches with horror and fascination thethreatened destruction of all she should hold dear, the question always lo oming of whether she will be able to draw back in time to save herself and Michael. Three Conitnents once again reveals why Ruth Prawer Jhabvala is regarded as one of the world's most celebrated novelists." (from the dj). Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 20.00

27497 JHABVALA, Ruth Prawer How I Became A Holy Mother. First Edition in dustjacket
John Murray, , London, 1976,
JHABVALA, Ruth Prawer. How I Became A Holy Mother. London : John Murray, (1976). First Edition. Pp (4),v,(1),1-203,(3). 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, CBE (b. May 7, 1927, Cologne, Germany – d. April 3, 2013, New York City) was a German-born British and American novelist. A collection of nine short stories by the Indian author. Unlike Ruth Jhabvala's other work in recent years, these stories are not concerned so much with Europeans in India as with Indians themselves. They are about universal human passions - but interwoven with Indiia itself. The heat, the vastness, the loneliness of India are all reflected in the lives of the peopleliving in it so that the country is not only an additional character but o ften the most important one. Most ot these stones are written from within the country, even from within particular castes or communities - - such as the Parsees in 'Bombay', or the dancing girls in 'Prostitutes'. Only two of the stories are about outsiders: 'Two More Under the Sun' is about two Englishwomen trying, in their very different ways, to adapt themselves to the post-Independence Indian scene; and in a lighter veim, 'How Became a Holy Mother' is a first-person story of a guru-seekinggirl who finds herself in anunusual role. There are stories about lonely, disappointed women such as ' In the Mountains' and "ln a Great Man's House'. Perhaps the story that brings the elements inherent in the others to" their most concentrated point is'Desecration' - here a young woman's lonely passion unfolds in an arid, lo nely place under a hot yellow SKy anna me swiris oi an Indian dust storm. As in all her siones the characters are brilliantly observed with a compassionate understanding." - from the dj. "How I became a Holy Mother", " In theMountains", "Bombay", "On Bail", "Prostitutes", "Two More under the Indian sun", " Picnic with Moonlight and Mangoes", "In a Great Man's House", and "Desecration".
