"When this book was first published in 1979 it was immediately recognised as the standard work on the evolution of rigging, mast making and sail making. More than twenty years later it remains the most comprehensive and informative work on the subject. The author himself wrote of the genesis of this book: 'As the rigging of contemporary models deteriorated over the years and so few untouched models were still in existence, I felt that a book conveying the various changes in rigging was a necessity to prevent the historical data from disappearing. This book was therefore compiled over some ten years from information obtained from contemporary manuscripts, books, models, etc in the archives of the National Maritime Museum.'He went on to say of it: 'By use of this book it will now be possible for model craftsmen throughout the world, in the present and future, to restoreor make models correctly according to the historical features of the vario us periods. It will assist restorers of marine paintings in the difficult task of replacing obliterated rigging, as well as providing a handbook of technical information for the maritime and war historian.'" "Rhythmanalysis displays all the characteristics which made Lefebvre one of the most important Marxist thinkers of the twentieth century. In the analysis of rhythms -- both biological and social -- Lefebvre shows the interrelation of space and time in the understanding of everyday life. Index.8v, illustrated black card covers, lettered in white and green. "The produ ction of space is a search for a reconciliation between mental space (the space of the philosophers) and real space (the physical and social spheres in which we all live). In the course of his exploration, Henri Lefebvre moves from meta-physical and ideological considerations of the meaning of spaceto its experience in the everyday life of home and city. He seeks, in othe r words, to bridge the gap between the realms of the theory and practice, between the mental and the social, and between philosophy and reality. In doing so, he ranges through art, literature, architecture and economics, and further provides a powerful antidote to the sterile and obfuscatory methodsand theories characteristic of much recent continental philosophy." Belatedly, Lefebvre's reputation has grown exp onentially as a leading figure in European philosophy and social theory; and his pioneering works on space, everyday life and global urbanization haverevitalized urban theory, geography, planning, architecture, and cultural studies. In this context, this volume breaks new ground in spatial disciplines as well as critical theory: first, by bridging spatial Lefebvre discussions with broader reflections on his contributions to radical thought; second, by comparing influential Anglo-American explorations of Lefebvre's workwith those of the Continental--expecially French and German--traditions; a nd, third, by proposing a new third wave of Lefebvre scholarship, going beyond both urban political-economic critiques and postmodern-geographical appropriations, to propose new trajectories for reading Lefebvre today. -- from rear cover. Heading on covers and title-page : Maison Leger 3900. (Introduction). Text in French. Foreword by Peter Mansbridge.

"On November 5, 2013, the Conservative-dominated Senate voted to suspend three Canadian Senators -- Patrick Brazeau, Mike Duffy, and Pamela Wallin -- wihtout pay following a lengthy period of scandal concerning alleged improper expenses. Duffy and Wallin had been Senate superstars, former media personalities used to great effect to energize Conservative supporters and raise money from them. Of the three it was Duffy who gained the most notoriety. He had become a household name as a political reporter for CBC and CTV, one of Canada's best-paid journalists, and in the process made himself one of Prince Edward Island's most famous exports. For years he had cast himself as the ultimate insider, Parliament Hill's man in the know. But Duffy long harboured a desire to be a member of the political club, and ultimately lobbied his way into the Canadian Senate, where things unravelled with surprising intensity. Veteran journalist Dan Leger tells the story of Duffy's rise to the top in Canadian media, his entanglement with the Harper Conservatives, and the scandal that made him one of the most controversial figures in contemporary politics." - from the dustjacket.

The Ottawa is still a great river, despite the changes made by man, and contributes on a vast scale to theindustry, commerce, and amenities of the region. In this book, Robert Legg et tells how the river basin was formed geologically in prehistoric times, and how it has been used by explorers, missionaries, fur traders, lumbermen, settlers, travellers, and industry for more than 250 years. He describes the river as it appeared, with its spectacular rapids, waterfalls, and gorges, to those who voyaged on it in birchbark canoes (very often reproducing these vivid and picturesque accounts), and the major role it played in the development of the fur trade. Then came the heyday of the timber industry, when huge rafts of logs cut from the forests bordering tributary streams were floated downriver to Montreal. Dr Legget describes the building of early canals and the great days of steamboating, when one luxurious vessel could carry a thousand passengers up the river to the capital, Famous pioneer personalities are brought to life, and curious and fascinating incidents are related , including Royal visits by water. He brings the story up to date byshowing how the river has been turned to the use and convenience ot man by vast power developments, and concludes by taking the reader on a tour ot t he river today, indicating the best sites for viewing the scenery and how these may be reached by road, ferry, and rail." from the dj 1. Robert Ferguson Legget (b. September 29, 1904, Liverpool, England - d. April 17, 1994, Ottawa, Ontario).

From the author of Rideau Waterway, an examination of the canals constructed by the Royal Staff Corps of the British army between Kingston and Montreal in the years following the War of 1812. The book traces the subsequent fate of these canals up to the 1960s.

"Three small canals with locks were built from 1819 to 1834 between Carillon and Grenville, Quebec, by the Royal Staff Corps of the British army. Their purpose was to provide a navigable waterway on the Ottawa River around the Long Sault and associated rapids, which had a total drop of about sixty feet. The canals constituted a vital part of a military route between Montreal and Kingston, well north of the US border - a need recognized following the War of 1812. The rest of that route - the better known Rideau Canal - could not be used until these were built. The Ottawa River canals were in constant use, every summer, for over 120 years. Long after their original defensive function became obsolete they were used in commercial shipping and later by pleasure craft. In 1963 the canals were replaced by an electrically operated liftlock in the Carillon Dam of Hydro-Québec.Robert Legget describes the historical background, construction, operation, and reconstruction of the canals." - from the dj.

LEGGET, Robert. Rideau Waterway. Toronto : University of Toronto Press, 1955. First Edition. Pp. (6),[vii]-xiv,(2),[3]-249,(1). With [16] pp. of plates. 8vo, brown cloth, silver titles to spine, maps to the endpapers. Robert Ferguson Legget (b. September 29, 1904, Liverpool, England - d. April 17, 1994, Ottawa, Ontario). The book tells the history and many difficulties encountered when building the canal, as well as describing many of the locks, towns, lakes, rivers and islands located along the Waterway, which connectsthe cities of Kingston and Ottawa. "The beautiful chain of lakes and strea ms that forms the Rideau Waterway of Ontario is one of Canada's favourite playgrounds. Yearly it is visited by thousands of vacationing tourists from all parts of Canada and the United States. A pleasure craft which has reached the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario through the connecting inland waterways of the continent can pass from the city ot Kingston through the lovely Ontario countryside to the heart of Ottawa, the capital of Canada. One may, in fact, disembark a stone's throw from the nation's Parliament Buildings, and practically at the steps of the Chateau Laurier. To the fisherman, seeking richer waters "higher up," the locks are a convenient and pictures que means of passing from one enticing sheet of water to another; to the amateur photographer, the locks and dams are quaint and delightful subjects for his pictures; to the young, a mechanical marvel whose fascination never fails. But these waterways, now devoted solely to the enjoyment of the people of two friendly nation- neighbours, were planned in a time of stress, and built in the shadow of war. British engineers and Canadian contractors fought with the wilderness, driven by the spectre of a renewal of war with the United States, which might cut off communications by the St. Lawrence route. Fortunately the route was never needed for defence, but over the years it helped in the opening of Ontario for settlement and bore a varied freight of such things as lumber, coal, and cheese for communities between Kingston and the Ottawa River. Its commercial life is now over, and a delightful vacation-land remains. This book tells of the adventure of building the canal by soldiers and civilian labourers through rough bush, swamps, and rockywilderness, a magnificent piece of engineering over a route full of proble ms. It tells of the career and character of its ingenious Superintending Engineer, Colonel John By, whose achievement was clouded over in the haze of debate in the British government and Press concerning financial problems, although his record ultimately stood up to all examination. It describes allthe spots of interest - locks, towns and villages, lakes, rivers, and isla nds, along the Waterway - with stories of the pioneers who settled in this part of the country. The final chapters describe the growth of Bytown into Ottawa, of a construction camp into a regal city, showing how the story of Canada's capital is closely linked with that of the canal at whose head it stands." from the dj. Can Dr Warren's ex-husband, the most powerful district attorney in the Boston area, help to protect his estranged son? As the detectives are drawn deeper into the case, bodies begin piling up around them. The clues begin to point una ccountably to an unlikely subject -- a serial killer who has been in prisonfor twenty years of a life sentence. (8),1-436,(2), [40] pp plates. 8vo, blue spine with blue boards. "In 'On Seas of Glory' the U.S. navy meets a storyteller worthy of its epic. John Lehmanwas Ronald Reagan's Secretary of the Navy, and the man most responsible fo r rejuvenating the service during the 1980s. Lehman here gives a sweeping narrative of the Navy, from the Revolutionary War to the present day, filledwith the ships that dominated, equally titanic personalities, and the batt les that made history. Lehman profiles naval greats -- from John Paul Jonesand David Glasgow Farragut to Commodore George Dewey and FDR -- but also g ives credit to the lesser-known sailors who have made the U.S. Navy the mightiest in the world. 'On Seas of Glory' uses the diaries, memoirs, and letters of average sailors to reveal naval combat as though firsthand. A powderboy during the War of 1812 recalls running to fetch cartridges through tor rents of blood; the letters of the author's own father show what it was like to survive kamikaze attacks off Okinawa at the close of World War II; andthe bravery of naval pilot Tim Howard during Grenada proves the spirit of John Paul Jones is not dead." -from the dustjacket. "Genevieve Lehr's first collection of poetry is aslarge in heart as it is in sorrow. She mines world literature, folk cultur e, folksong and her own experience for the notes and melody adequate to encompass the mystery of being, with its attendant darkness and its redemptivelight. The book is wide-ranging, using the lyric, prose poem, long poem, s ong and meditation to draw the reader in. Lehr explores the primal links between mother and child, father and child, child and world, loss and enrichment, suffering and joy." - from the rear cover. Very good. Pp (4),[v]-xiv,(2),3-210. 8vo, ill ustrated blue cloth with brown lettering and cream title block to front board and spine. "Newfoundlanders have long and lustily sung their folksongs, and the tradition remains strong today. Despite modern influences, the old songs persist, new songs are composed to record the events of our time. This is the first major collection of Newfoundland folksongs compiled and edited by native Newfoundlanders. It concentrates on songs of local compositionlargely ignored by earlier collectors and presents a significant number of songs never before published. "For most of the last decade Genevieve Lehr and Anita Best have been travelling around the island recording the voices and favourite songs of anyone, young or old, who would perform. Recordings took place in family kitchens, on stage heads, and in trap stores while thesinger knitted twine or repaired lobster pots, aboard ships at anchor or e n route to some deserted harbour. Humming engines, blowing oilstoves, or clattering supper dishes provided accompaniment. "The 120 songs collected here by Lehr and Best have been transcribed by Pamela Morgan and illustrated by Elly Cohen. Some recall the distant past of a long and rich seafaring tradition; others tell of such recent tragedies as the displacement of outportpeople and the sinking of the Ocean Ranger. The selection represents the s tate of the folksong in Newfoundland today; in some part it documents what is lost and forgotten, but it also celebrates what has survived, and thrives." - p.[i]. "While some scholars of European affairs will be familiar with the historical problem of Transylvania, for most readers this multinational region, in the heart of Europe, will signify little more than the fabled home of Dracula. Large 8vo, illustrated paper covered boards, red and whitelettering to spine. "The pictures in this book are a selection of the phot ographs I took of American athletes who were training to take part in the Games in Atlanta. In meets and competitions all over the country, the best athletes were testing themselves, and being tested, as part of the process of qualifying for a place on the American teams. My photographs were done inindividual and group sessions that I set up with the athletes. This gave m e the opportunity to depict movement close up, intimately — when movement was the subject. Of course, it wasn't always the subject. Each time I workedwith an athlete I had two possibilities: I could concentrate on the person (a portrait in the more conventional sense) or I could concentrate on the sport. Sometimes I was able to do both." (from the Introduction). Black marker line to top edge, else very good. 45.00

31389 LEIBOVITZ, Annie LEIBOVITZ, Annie Pilgrimage. First Edition in dustjacket
Random House, New York, 2011, ISBN:9780375505089
LEIBOVITZ, Annie. Pilgrimage. Introduction by Doris Kearns Goodwin. New York : Random House, (2011). First American Printing. Pp (9),10-244,(2). Illustrated. Large 8vo [ca. 9 by 12 inches], white cloth, blind-stamped lettering to front board and spine. "Pilgrimage took Annie Leibovitz to places thatshe could explore with no agenda. She wasnt on assignment. She chose the s ubjects simply because they meant something to her. The first place was Emily Dickinsons house in Amherst, Massachusetts, which Leibovitz visited witha small digital camera. A few months later, she went with her three young children to Niagara Falls. Thats when I started making lists, she says. Sheadded the houses of Virginia Woolf and Charles Darwin in the English count ryside and Sigmund Freuds final home, in London, but most of the places on the lists were American. The work became more ambitious as Leibovitz discovered that she wanted to photograph objects as well as rooms and landscapes. She began to use more sophisticated cameras and a tripod and to travel wit h an assistant, but the project remained personal. Leibovitz went to Concord to photograph the site of Thoreaus cabin at Walden Pond. Once she got there, she was drawn into the wider world of the Concord writers. Ralph Waldo Emersons home and Orchard House, where Louisa May Alcott and her family lived and worked, became subjects. The Massachusetts studio of the Beaux Arts sculptor Daniel Chester French, who made the seated statue in the Lincoln Memorial, became the touchstone for trips to Gettysburg and to the archives where the glass negatives of Lincolns portraits have been saved. Lincolns portraitistsprincipally Alexander Gardner and the photographers in Mathew Bradys studiowere also the men whose work at the Gettysburg battlefield established the foundation for war photography. At almost exactly the same time,in a remote, primitive studio on the Isle of Wight, Julia Margaret Cameron was developing her own ultimately influential style of portraiture. Leibov itz made two trips to the Isle of Wight and, in an homage to the other photographer on her list, Ansel Adams, she explored the trails above the Yosemite Valley, where Adams worked for fifty years. The final list of subjects is perhaps a bit eccentric. Georgia OKeeffe and Eleanor Roosevelt but also Elvis Presley and Annie Oakley, among others. Figurative imagery gives way to the abstractions of Old Faithful and Robert Smithsons Spiral Jetty. Pilgrimage was a restorative project for Leibovitz, and the arc of the narrativeis her own. From the beginning, when I was watching my children stand mesm erized over Niagara Falls, it was an exercise in renewal, she says. It taught me to see again." (from the dj). 31390 LEIBOVITZ, Annie LENNON, John Annie Leibovitz Photographs 1970-1990. First Edition
Harper Collins, New York, 1991, ISBN:0060166088
LEIBOVITZ, Annie. Annie Leibovitz Photographs 1970-1990. (New York) : Harper Collins Publishers, (1991). First Printing. Pp [1]-232. Illustrated. 4to,illustrated paper covered boards [photograph of nude John Lennon kissing Y oko Ono]. Annie Leibovitz (b. 1949) is an American portrait photographer. "On December 8, 1980, Leibovitz had a photo shoot with John Lennon for Rolling Stone, promising him he would make the cover. After she had initially tried to get a picture with just Lennon alone, which is what Rolling Stone wanted, Lennon insisted that both he and Yoko Ono be on the cover. Leibovitz then tried to re-create something like the kissing scene from the Double Fantasy album cover, a picture that she loved. She had John remove his clothes and curl up next to Yoko. Leibovitz recalls, "What is interesting is she said she'd take her top off and I said, 'Leave everything on' — not really preconceiving the picture at all. Then he curled up next to her and it was very, very strong. You couldn't help but feel that she was cold and he looked like he was clinging on to her. I think it was amazing to look at the first Polaroid and they were both very excited. John said, 'You've captured our relationship exactly. Promise me it'll be on the cover.' I looked him inthe eye and we shook on it." Leibovitz was the last person to professional ly photograph Lennon—he was shot and killed five hours later." - from wikipedia.
