Illustrated in Black-and-White. Index. 8vo, black paper covered boards, silver lettering to spine. "In an 1828 letter to his partner, Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre wrote, "Iam burning with desire to see your experiments from nature." In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within th e philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography asa medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussio n of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He examines the output of the various nominees for "first photographer," then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The resultis a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the mediums undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity." (fromthe dj). Contents : Preface.. 1. BATES, H.E. A Moment in Time. London : Michael Joseph, (1964). First Edition. Pp. (6),7-[248]. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Eads A100a. "The setting of A Moment in Time is Southern England in the summer of 1940, the year of the Battle of Britain. The story is recounted by a young girl of good family and rather secluded upbringing, Elizabeth Cartwright, who suddenly finds her life revolutionised and eventually almost shattered by her friendship with a group of young fighter-pilots engaged in desperate conflict above her beloved pastoral countryside. As she passes successively througn hero-worship, gaiety, adoration, love, dread, disillusionment, anguish, bitterness and tragedy to final happiness, the novel becomes an account of two battles: the one of mortal conflict for victory in the sky, the other, equally desperate, the very soul of the girl herself. Flying Officer X, whch H. E. Bates wrote from his experiences with the RA.F during the war, willnot need to be reminded that his knowledge and interpretation of the lives of flying men is vigorous, compelling and authentic. These qualities are a ll eminently displayed in A Moment in Time, together with his unparallelledfeeling for the English countryside and its people during that most memora ble summer nearly a quarter of a century ag." Henry Walter Bates, b. February 8, 1825, Leicester; d. February 16, 1892, London), was an important mid-century English naturalist, whose main contributions centred around mimicry in the animal kingdom.

"The Naturalist on the River Amazons" was so important and highly regarded upon its publication, that Charles Darwin dubbed it to be among the best books of natural history travel-writing ever publishing in England.

"In the autumn of 1847 Mr. A.[lfred] R.[ussell] Wallace, who has since acquired wide fame in connection with the Darwinian theory of Natural Selection, proposed to me a joint expedition to the river Amazons, for the purpose of exploring the Natural History of its banks; the plan being to make for ourselves a collection of objects, dispose of the duplicates in London to pay expenses, and gather facts, as Mr. Wallace expressed it in one his letters, 'towards solving the problem of the origin of species'. [...] My companion left the country at the end of four years; [...] I remained seven years longer, returning home in July, 1959. [...] The part of the Amazons region where I resided longest being unexplored country to the Naturalist, no less than 8000 of the species here enumerated were new to science."- from the preface.

Every passing ship, from the Morag Jane to the Duke of York, was challenged and identified. Stephanie volunteered for signalling to "free a man for the fleet." Like all the trainee Wrens at HMS Cabbala, she hoped for a posting to Portsmouth. But the Navy sent her to the Highlands, and a life of incredible harshness. For the Wrens at Ganavan station with their 'blue chapped hands and our socks stuck to our toes with broken chilblains', life was a constant struggle for dry clothes, sleep, warmth, food and the forbidden pastime of Getting On a Boat. Yet Stephanie loved her vocation. She was complete mistress of the Aldis lamp, and the codes which gave her power over the Navy - if she said to a ship 'Turn to starboard', it obeyed. She could converse with sailors at such speedno officer could intercept her. In this way she picked up Jack from Ohio. With he terrible abruptness of the times, he sailed for D-Day and was gone. Then, over fifty years later, a message came from America..." - from the b ack cover. Very good. 20.00

BATTEN, Jack. Judges. Toronto : Macmillan of Canada, (1986). First Edition.Pp [i]-xv,(1),1-335,(1). 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “What every judge thrives on is the drama of the courtroom, and Batten has drawn from his subjects wonderful stories about all kinds of cases – everything from murder through libel, child custody, malpractice, stock fraud, robbery, anti-combines offences, and assault. Whether the anecdotes are told by such a seasoned former member of the bench as 95-year-old James McRuer, the last judge to sentence a man to the gallows, or by Stephen Borins, who conducted the extradition hearing of rock groupie Cathy Smith, charged with the murder of John Belushi, or by Sandy MacPherson, who still recalls with horror the bitter Colin Thatcher child-custody case, or by Ron Macdonald, the Haligonian who sits as Liechtenstein's representative on the European Court of Human Rights, they offer a compelling look at the law in action from thejudge's unique perspective.” - from the dj. Nancy Bauer, née Luke (b. July 7, 1934 (b. Chelmsford, Massachusetts) Canadian writer and editor and longtime resident of New Brunswick.

This is her second novel.

"To say that this is a novel about middle age is to belie the vivacity and freshness of Nancy Bauer's imagination. Wise-Ears is full of surprises. Sophie Aspinwall is 58 years old and she doesn't know what she wants to do with the rest of her life. She makes plans, she dreams dreams. Few of them come true. In a sense, however, they all come true, because Sophie comes to terms with them and with herself. This is a genial book, inventive, real, true and very funny." - the rear.

Cover art : Peter Bell's "Return to the Day Haunt of the Siffleur Montagne".

Nancy Bauer, née Luke (b. July 7, 1934 (b. Chelmsford, Massachusetts) Canadian writer and editor and longtime resident of New Brunswick.

This is her fourth novel.

"Nancy Bauer has the ability to create some of the most memorable female characters in contemporary literature. For Samara the Wholehearted, she has written a coming-of-age story, centred around Samara, an imaginative young woman whose maturity is marked by an impulsive examinatiion of the inner life.

A profoundly religious writer with a lively interest in Eastern spirituality, Bauer transports her readers in this novel to the slightly tilted world of Summerland, a communal summer retreat. Here she introduces Samara, her perpetually adolescent half-brother Fred, a disabled genius named Marty and a host of off-beat characters who form an unusual extended family in a world filled with marvel. Mixing rarefied prose with the traditional techniques of story-telling and postmodern innovation, Bauer produces a novel which is both technically adept and intensely memorable.
