Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Two leaves creased, else very good in dustjacket. 100.00 "Between 1914 and 1921, Russia experienced a national crisis that destroyed the tsarist state and led to the establishment of the new Bolshevik order. During this period of war, revolution, and civil war, there was a food-supply crisis. Although Russia was one of the world's major grain exporters, the country was no longer capable of feeding its own people. The hunger of the urban workers increased the pace of revolutionary events in 1917 and 1918, andthe food-supply policy during the civil war became the most detested symbo l of the hardships imposed by the Bolsheviks. Focusing on this crisis, LarsLih examines the fundamental process of political and social breakdown and reconstitution. He argues that this seven-year period is the key to unders tanding the Russian revolution and its aftermath. In 1921 the Bolsheviks rejected the food-supply policy established during the civil war; sixty-five years later, Mikhail Gorbachev made this change of policy a symbol of perestroika. Since then, more attention has been given both in the West and in the Soviet Union to the early years of the revolution as one source of the tragedies of Stalinist oppression. Lih's argument is based on a great variety of source material—archives, memoirs, novels, political rhetoric, pamphlets, and propoganda posters. His new study will be read with profit by all who are interested in the drama of the Russian revolution, the roots of bothStalinism and anti-Stalin reform, and more generally in a new way of under standing the effects of social and political breakdown." LILL, Wendy. The Fighting Days : a Play. Vancouver : Talonbooks, 1985. First Printing. Pp. (6), 7-93, (3). 8vo, illlustrated black card covers with white spine. A two-act play by the Nova Scotian authorthen living in New Brunswick. "The Fighting Days is set in Winnipeg during 1910-1917. The play focuses on the life and work of Francis Marion Beynon, a Manitoba journalist and political activist. When the play opens, Francis is on her way to Winnipeg, leaving behind a sheltered and religious rural childhood. Soon after she arrives she meets Nellie McClung and becomes involved in the Votes-for-Women movement. She also begins work as the womens' page editor for The RuralReview, airing her controversial political views on the editorial page. Su ddenly, Canada is involved in World War I, and the conscription crisis divides the suffragists: should all women have the vote, or just Dominion-born women who are sending their husbands and sons off to battle? Should women use their votes to push for conscription or to lobby for a swift end to the war? A play about the polarities of public and private lives, and about issues of racism and pacifism within the women's movement, The Fighting Days deals with timeless moral concerns." -- from rear cover. LILLARD, Charles, (ed.). Warriors of the North Pacific : Missionary Accounts of the Northwest Coast, the Skeena and Stikine Rivers and the Klondike, 1829-1900. Edited and annotated by Charles Lillard. Victoria, British Columbia : Sono Nis Press, (1984). First Edition. Pp (8),9-280. 8vo, wine cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Since the 1740s the Northwest Coast has had many frontiers - Russian, Spanish, British, American - and each has known its own 'rush.' Men thronged into each frontier seeking what was in demand, what would bring a quick profit. The first rush was for fur, then came the rush for gold, for fish, timber and finally, and repeatedly, land. Few of the men and women drawn to the coast remained. They made their fortunes or lost their shirts, then disappeared south, east and west. History remembers a fewof their names. The mad men and the iron men, a few prostitutes and one se cond-rate card shark - they live on, but history has turned its back on another rush and its frontiersmen. British Columbia and Alaska were practically unknown geographically, but the country was inhabited by primitive people. They were the magnet that drew the missionaries to the North Pacific. Themissionaries would "bring light to the darkness" and "Christianize the hea then" and these churchmen were big men for a big country. Even in a world of frontiersmen these men set standards for travelling, and for courage, andstrength. They were Old Testament Christians. Leaving society and the safe ty of numbers behind, they moved among the people preaching and doctoring, teaching and building. And each was as colourful as any other frontiersman.Jonathan Green saw the future as clearly as we see the past. Thomas Crosby , whose fists and voice were his sword, took on the whiskey dealers and slave traders, and cut a swath wide as Moses. Charles Harrison, erratic scholar and land promoter, fell in love with the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Haida and spent forty years selling the area to anyone who would listen. And there was Bishop William Ridley, poet and self-taught doctor, whose travels were epic and restlessness contagious. These were nineteenth-century men, no mould or rule could contain them . Single-handedly, they took on the Tsimshian, Haida, Salish and Tlingit, and then fought for these people against the slave traders, the whiskey dealers, and all the other 'Christians' who broke every one of the Ten Commandments daily. Academics have written about these men, but the men are too big for these versions. the truth lies in their own writing. Fortunately, each one of these men left his own account of his life and work on the coast. So radically different are these stories from popular opinion, they must be read to be believed. And whatever else can be said, had it not been for these men and dozens like them, there would be no Haida or Tsimshian or Tlingit or Nishga or Tahltan today. They would be a memory if it were not for these far-sighted missionaries who turned the tide of civilization, protecting the Indians from thousands of Christians who belived a good Indian was a drunk or dean Indian." from the dj flaps. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine, tope edge dyed blue. Renard, Antarctica 921. "Lawrence Edward Grace Oates will always beremembered as a bero, as the man who walked willingly to his death on the ill-fated expedition to the South Pole led by Captain Scott, in order that his comrades might have a better chance to survive. But this book tells a wider story than that of the expedition alone. Oates was a Victorian schoolboy from a comfortable home, numbering Eton amongst his schools, and winter trips to South Africa and Madeira amongst his journeys. After much effort and study he joined one of the British Army's outstanding cavalry regiments, the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, and served in Ireland, actively in South Africa during the Boer War, in Egypt and in India. It was from India that he volunteered for Scott's expedition. The detail in this broad canvas has been meticulously researched and much of it comes from sources hitherto unavailable, from the letters which Oates wrote so regularly to his mother and from his personal diary of the expedition. The story that emerges is one ofa brave man, quiet but with a strong sense of humour, a sardonic outlook a nd one not too eager to conform to the established patterns of Victorian lite. The final chapters, dealing with the formation of the Antarctic expedition, its voyage and its fateful journey, tell much about Oates and his comrades. His relationship with Scott was never an easy one and it is fascinating to read of the exchanges between the two and of their very different approaches to common problems. With a wealth of illustrations, detailed maps and source references, this is a very readable story of a remarkable man in a fascinating period ot history." (from the dj). Large 8vo, illustrated grey cloth, silver lettering to spine. "Walking throughthis parklike area, the memorial appears as a rift in the earth -- a long, polished black stone wall, emerging from and receding into the earth. Appr oaching the memorial, the ground slopes gently downward, and the low walls emerging on either side, growing out of the earth, extend and converge at apoint below and ahead. Walking into the grassy site contained by the walls of this memorial, we can barely make out the carved names upon the memoria l's walls. These names, seemingly infinite in number, convey the sense of overwhelming numbers, while unifying these individuals into a whole.... " Sobegins the competition entry submitted in 1981 by a Yale undergraduate for the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. -- subsequ ently called "as moving and awesome and popular a piece of memorial architecture as exists anywhere in the world." Its creator, Maya Lin, has been nothing less than world famous ever since. From the explicitly political to the un-ashamedly literary to the completely abstract, her simple and powerfulsculpture -- the Rockefeller Foundation sculpture, the Southern Poverty La w Center Civil Rights Memorial, the Yale Women's Table, Wave Field -- her architecture, including The Museum for African Art and the Norton residence, and her protean design talents have defined her as one of the most gifted creative geniuses of the age. Boundaries is her first book: an eloquent visual/verbal sketchbook produced with the same inspiration and attention to detail as any of her other artworks. Like her environmental sculptures, it is a site, but one which exists at a remove so that it may comment on the personal and artistic elements that make up those works. In it, sketches, photographs, workbook entries, and original designs are held together by a deeply personal text. Boundaries is a powerful literary and visual statement by "a leading public artist" (Holland Carter). It is itself a unique work ofart." (from the dj). 31966 LINCOLN, Joseph C. Blowing Clear, First Edition in dustjacket

LINCOLN, Joseph C. Blowing Clear. New York / London : D. Appleton and Company, 1930. First Edition. Pp (6),1-[333],(1). 8vo, blue cloth, green lettering to front board and spine. Sullwold, A Descriptive Bibliography of JosephC. Lincoln First Editions pp.264-5, Smith & Weller, Sea Fiction Guide 1497 . A novel set in the fishing area of Cape Cod. "Writing in his happiest vein, Mr. Lincoln tells in "Blowing Clear" one of the finest stories he has given his readers in his long and highly popular career. And yet, though the salt breezes of Cape Cod blow through its pages, this is not merely a sea story. It is the story of a great-hearted man and a son whose birth was shrouded in mystery. It is the tale of a lovable man, and of the delightful group of Cape Cod folk who surround him. John Heath lived the life of a recluse and was a mystery to the village gossips. Out of the past he strove to forget comes a boy —his son. And John Heath opens his heart to the lad. His whole life begins to center in bringing this boy to fine manhood. But simultaneously two blows fall upon John Heath, one through the son he has come tolove, the other out of that same past that has hung like a shadow in the b ackground. It is a gripping situation that develops and Joseph C. Lincoln makes it all very human. A thread of romance develops in the lives of both the father and son; and among the book' most delightful features are those two genuinely humorous characters—Lorenzo Weeks and Huldy Bascom who strivesto save his soul from perdition. For anyone who wishes enjoyable, cheering reading there is to be recommended this novel wnicn reveals Joseph C. Linc oln at his very best." (from the dj). Illustrated. 8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to front board and spine."Over many years the Lincolns have written an illustrated Christmas letter to their friends, the response to which has been, "When are you two going to do a book together?" It was a logical question as they have functioned as a team for years. His photographic skill has preserved scenes for her tuture studio work. Her artistic sense has made her his best literary critic. Then a wild but magniricent, four day, northeast storm confined the vacationing Lincolns to a tiny inn, the Compass Rose, on Grand Manan Island. This was the catalyst that got their first novel underway. The Sucker Brook System transcends the typical murder mystery, although it should satisfy the devotees of that milieu with murder and more murder. But it goes beyond to present a nostalgic view of life in the small mill town of Ware, Massachusetts in the 1930's. Of special meaning to residents of that town, it actually reflects life in thousands of such towns.around the United States, th;ere?by gaining a certain historical significance." (from the dj). Illustrated. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to front board and spine. "When blonde, vivacious Elizabeth chose to attend college at far off Acadia University in Nova Scotia, it threatened trouble for her home town love, for, as one of her rejected Canadian suitors said, "Most girls are just girls, but you are some chicken!" Five years have elapsed since the time of The Sucker Brook System. In this second novel the Lincolns pick up the action in one of the most dramatic in the history of Ware, Massachusetts. The long years of grinding depression are now capped by the collapse of the Otis Company, the town's leading industry, compounded by a disastrous flood and devastating hurricane. It makes exciting reading as the author struggles to hold his love against the challenge of fun-loving Eric while the heroic town fights for its life, attaining national recognition as "The Town that Can't Be Licked." Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to front board and spne. "Joyce Wieland : Artist on Fire is an intimate biography of one of Canada's best-loved and most influential artists. For decades, Joyce Wieland and her husband, Michael Snow, were at the centre of a flourishing visual arts community in Toronto. Author Jane Lind has produced a vivid portrait that begins with Joyce's early years and goes on to trace all the events of a passionately lived life. The result of a decade of writing and research, this biography draws on extensive interviews with Joyce as well as with her family, friends, and colleagues. Joyce openly discussed her life, her work, and her marriage during countless hours of interviews, the result is a rich account that could only be written with close collaboration between subiect and author. Jane Lind reveals the turmoil of Joyce's childhood and teens, chronicles the wild jazz parties and gallery openings of the fifties and sixties, and discusses Joyce's long, troubled marriage to Michael Snow. Her highly productive career is also described and considered, and more that fifty of herworks are reproduced in colour. When Joyce rose to prominence in the sixti es, she was one of the few recognized Canadian woman artists. As she continued her exploration of films, and collages, Joyce became a trailblazer for generations of women who followed her. Brimming with anecdotes and generously illustrated with personal photographs as well as colour reproductions ofJoyce's art, this biography is a warm, engaging portrait of one of Canada' s great artists." Illustrated. Double Column. Oblong 8vo, blue cloth, silver lettering to spine. “This is a book writ large in salt, steel and oil. It is the singular story of a sailor who took up the brush and transmitted to canvas the knowledge of the sea engraved on his sensesin eighteen years of plying the world's oceans. There have been all too fe w painters of ships at sea in the history of art and, even of these, precious few who have been blessed with the artistic talent to make visual their actual sea-going experiences. Chief Petty Officer Geoff Vollmer is one of these rare painting sailors. His work has blossomed as a surge of expressionfor what he has felt and what he has experienced in all his naval years; i t is not art that is so much keenly observed as art that is keenly felt. Itis in fact the art of eulogy – and, as such, places him in an artistic nav al tradition that began in this country when Sydney Parkinson sketched the Endeavour careened at the mouth of the Endeavour River in 1770. These painting bring forth the drama and the power of the fleet, whether of today or yesteryear, whether of flagships or minesweepers, whether anchored safely orfighting out a storm. They are the visual evocations of a man who has humb ly listened to the language of the ship, the groans of steel the squeaks ofmetal against metal and the booming echo of a short sea. Here is the colle ctive and dynamic essence of Australia's fighting ships.”- from the dj. Bookplate, else very good in dustjacket. 35.00

Bruce Linder's detailed history and exciting images of the U.S. Navy in Hampton Roads provides a comprehensive portrayal of how a region that still likes to think of itself as a small southern locale has helped molst nearly every facet of today's modern Navy. From privateers, enemy ships-of-the-line, and ironclads to aircraft carriers, nuclear-powered submarines, and the role of special forces, this compellinghistory traces the colorful and sometimes subtle nexus between expanding A merican naval prowess and regional dreams. This ballanced illustrated chronicle of the distinctive naval character of Norfolk and Hampton Roads encompasses war at sea, courage, genius, leadership, and command entwined within a sometimes-stormy relationship between the Navy and its civic hosts. Some of the most identifiable names in American naval history -- Decatur, Truxton, Dale, Farragut, Buchanan, Halsey -- have all made their indelible mark on Norfolk's legacy, and some of the signature events of American history --the British surrender at Yorktown, the Battle of the Monitor and Virginia, and the defeat of the German U-boat -- have all had a Hampton Roads focus. A second state (as evinced by the black lettering, as opposed to the pressed lettering to board and gilt to the spine found on the first state), first edition of one of the classics of twentieth-century speculative fiction, encompassing both fantastical and philosophical elements. Influential in the writings of C.S. Lewis (science fiction and religious writings alike), and greatly admired by Tolkien, the novel was dubbed by Colin Wilson to be the greatest novel of the twentieth century. Published in an edition of 1250 copies, of which a little more than half were second state bindings.
"A metaphysical novel set in the framework of an interplanetary voyage, using the incidents of fantastic adventure. [...] Maskull, a man from earth, spends five days on the planet Tormance (Torments) which revolved around the double sun of Arcturus. During this period he undergoes fantastic adventures, sometimes horrible, sometimes existential. He sees frames of reference embodied in fantastic terms, grows new sense organs to appreciate them, sees new spectra-- always with a doom hanging over him. [...] The theoretical basis behind the story is that all sparks of life from creativity or God are diverted by a dual and equal (or even more powerful) power, which is variously called Shaping (phenomenality) or Crystalman." - from Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, pp. 312-313.
