Dorothy Kathleen May Livesay, OC OBC FRSC (b. October 12, 1909, Winnipeg, Manitoba – d. December 29, 1996, Victoria, British Columbia).

"Half verdant, half in flames, the divided tree symbolizes the androgynous wholeness of the self. This is the theme of much of Dorothy Livesay's writing and the central metaphor for her most definitive collection of poetry, 'The Self-Completing Tree'. The poems are selected by Livesay herself from her first publication in 1928 to her most recent unpublished work. They are grouped according to the major themes that have animated her life's work: the divinity of nature, youth and innocence, the experience of aging, love and sexual fulfilment, the social and political struggle for peace, and the poet's continuing faith in a beneficient cosmos." - from rear.

Compiled and Edited by the Shipping Editor of Lloyd's. London : The Corporation of Lloyd's, (June) 1944. Third Edition. Pp (88). 8vo, brown printed card covers. “In view of the number of requests received at Lloyd's it would appear that a printed list showing the position of ports and shipping places might be of interest. For general purposes no maps should be necessary, although the arrangement is such that the list can be used if necessary in conjunction with any atlas. No effort has been made to include the names o f all places on the coastline of the world. Such a list would be too cumbersome for daily use. An attempt has been made, however, to include all portsused by oversea shipping throughout the world.” - from the preface. (Lloyd's of London). FORBES, Colin. Year of the Golden Ape. London : Collins, 1974. First Edition. Pp (10),[11]-284,(4). 8vo, medium brown cloth, giltlettering to spine. Reflecting the OPEC-related anxieties of the time, thi s thriller pits Arab terrorists and a suave English assassin against a doughty Lloyd's investigator in an attempt to disrupt the British mercantile marine. "British Ships Warned of Hijack Plot. By Our Shipping Correspondent. The 2,200-strong British merchant fleet, scattered throughout the world, was put on full alert last night after intelligence agents discovered a pro-Arab guerilla plot to hijack and sabotage British shipping. Daily Telegraph. It takes a very special kind of man to attempt an operation on this scale but give him the motive and the resources and he will bring it off. Conditions in the Middle East today provide both. To carry out his spectacular coup the Arab in the dark glasses chooses two professionals, an Algerian and an Englishman; while the former kills without compunction the latter prides himself on the bloodless finesse of his work. Their first moves go without detection. But when a Lloyds investigator gets wind of them, a swift, ruthless and world-wide battle of wits is set in motion. For the group of men and the single girl aboard the giant tanker Challenger, as lor the reader, her latest voyage is one of unbearable tension. Time alternately races and stands still as the story moves to its climax, and the great ship sails towards her destiny, in San Francisco harbour. The authenticity of the setting on the tanker, a giant metal iceberg in the Pacific, is matched by Colin Forbes's faultless development of suspense. His new book is not only nrst class entertainment but an invitation to think a little more deeply about the world in which we live." (from the dj). Very good in slightly rubbed dustjacket. 30.00

That that country- is New Zealand will Tae admitted by all, by those who approve and those who disapprove NewZealand democracy is the talk of the world to-day. It has made itself the policeman and partner of industry to an extent unknown elsewhere. It is the"Experiment station" of advanced legislation, Reforms that others have bee n only talking about, New -Zealand has done, and it has anticipated the others in some they had not even begun to talk about. Co-operation—with its stores, factories, banks, and, now, farms, where the consumers and producers, the capitalists and the labourers, are the same people—is the "Farthest No rth" in the sphere of self-help. New Zealand democracy is the Farthest South in the sphere of politics, which must still be called "self-help," for ina democracy, in self-government, state-help is self-help." - from Chapter 1. 32188 LLOYD, Robin Rough Passage to London : A Sea Captain's Tale, A Novel. Uncorrected Page Proofs
Sheridan House, Lanham, MD, 2013, 2013
LLOYD, Robin. Rough Passage to London : A Sea Captain's Tale, A Novel. (Lanham, Maryland) : Sheridan House, (2013). Uncorrected Page Proofs. Pp (6),vii,(3),3-334., 8vo, art-illustrated white card covers, black lettering to spine.

"April 7, 1814. Dawn. Coastal Connecticut. Brothers Elisha Ely Morgan and Abraham Morgan, respectively eight and thirteen years old, witness a British redcoat raiding party torch defenseless American ships toward the end of the War of 1812. The boys are spotted and chased in their rowboat, with execution the likely outcome. Suddenly the sun crests over the horizon, temporarily blinding their pursuers and giving them the instant they need to escape.

Eight years later, Ely boards a sailing ship in the port of Lyme. He is sixteen and intent on two things: to answer the ancient, mysterious call of the ocean by becoming a seaman, and to find out what happened to his brother, Abraham — who vanished on a South America-bound ship six years earlier.

Thus begins the incredible journey narrated in Rough Passage to London, to be published in October. Former NBC News Foreign Correspondent Lloyd is more than just knowledgeable about 19th Century maritime history — he is a direct descendant of the real Captain Ely Morgan, who made over one hundred voyages across the Atlantic, gaining fame and renown on both sides of the ocean. Morgan entertained everyone from the painter J.M.W. Turner to William Thackeray to Queen Victoria on board his ship. He was admired from high society to sailors’ taverns, and his close friends included Charles Dickens, whose story “A Message From The Sea” drew inspiration from Morgan’s character and experiences." (6),[7]-88. Illustrated in colour. 8vo, illustrated black card covers with french flaps, white lettering to front and spine. "Ramon Llull was a highly original medieval writer and thinker. Direct contact with Moslem culture during his early years in Majorca, soon after the Christian reconquest, furnished him with a vision of the'Other' quite unique among medieval European intellectuals. It was not, ho wever, until his thirties that he abandoned the courtly life, immersed himself in theological and philosophical studies and began his sustained campaign of conversion. He travelled on many occasions throuhgout Europe in search of royal and papal support and undertook several missions to north Africa, in the course of one of which he was stoned and imprisoned. Despite his many travels he found time to compose more than 260 works, in Catalan and Latin, many of which related to his famous 'Art', a method for religious discussion with scientific and logical applications that subsequently influenced Giordano Bruno and Leibniz. WHen he was lmost eighty years old, Llull dictated the story of his life to a group of Carthusians in Paris, leaving us this fascinating autobiography. This edition includes both an English translation and the original Latin version." - from the front flap. Very good. 22.50
