35801 McCLUSKEY, Elaine. Going Fast : a novel. First Edition
Goose Lane Editions, Fredericton, 2009, ISBN:9780864925251
McCLUSKEY, Elaine. Going Fast : a novel. (Fredericton, New Brunswick) : Goose Lane Editions, (2009). First Printing. Pp (6),7-376. 8vo, white illustrated cardcovers with red spine, yellow & red lettering to spine. Cover has image of two boxers on a photo of a red boxing glove. Elaine McCluskey (b. 1955, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia). "In this punchy, uproarious romp of a novel, the Halifax boxing world - peopled with has-beens, wannabes, and posers dressed in spandex, leopard prints, and tie-dye -- touches gloves with the colourful world of sports reporting. Both groups need something hot with speedy delivery. Enter a cast of misfits. Turmoil Davies, an enigmatic Trinidadian heavyweight, is poised to storm the boxing scene. Ownie Flanagan, an old-school trainer, trains men with more ambition than talent. He's looking for "one real fighter" before he retires and believes Turmoil is it. Scott MacDonald, a journalist assigned to the boxing beat, tries to relive his own glory days through other men's sweat. With a wicked sense of humour, ElaineMcCluskey conjures a larger-than-life world where spotty turf is defended with klutzy bravado down to the final, unpredictable ten-count. Elaine McCluskey grew up in a boxing household. A former news editor and bureau chief for Canadian Press in Halifax, she has also worked as a reporter at CBC-TV and the Halifax Chronicle-Herald." - from the back cover. Very good. 13.00

Her sisters were the Olympic and the Britannic. Together, these were the largest and most luxurious liners of their time, their sheer size giving an overwhelming feeling of safety and security. "Growing up in Alberta in the early 1920s, Grant McGonachie's heroes were the bush pilots, whose flights offered a prospect of fast, versatile transportation to the isolated inhabitants of the northwest. McConachie went on to combine his fearless expertise as a pilot with a resourceful business sense, helping the aviation industry revolutionize travel and transportation througnout the world. In 1931, with borrowed capital and one elderly plane, McConachie founded his first air service. By 1947 at the age of 38, McConachie was president of Canadian Pacific Airlines. Under his progressive guidance, CP Air quickly established itself as one of the world's most advanced international airlines, pioneering trans-polar routes and the use of jet aircraft. "Dazzling, extravagant costumes and the stars who wore them highlight this first major book on Hollywood costume. 127 extraordinary photographs of actual costumes, 79 in full color, were made especially for this book by fashion photographer Keith Trumbo. Most of these pictures are of costumes assembled for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's record breaking show, "Romantic and Glamorous Hollyood Design", while some were added from other collections. The photographs capture not only the exquisite materials and craftsmanship of the clothes but their aura of glamour and romance. And, in some200 photographs from the great Hollywood movies and TV shows, the stars ar e seen wearing these costumes in well-remembered dramatic scenes. Here, too, in pictures and intimate biographies--many based on personal interviews--are the stars themselves from Pickford, Crawford, Garbo, and Hepburn to Garland, Streisand, and Cher, as well as the designers, dressmakers, hairdressers, technicians, and directors who made and selected these stunning clothes--Adrian, Erte, von Stroheim, Minelli, Mackie, Plunkett, and many more. The lively and informative text discloses details of costume production and its fabulous costs (one dress alone cost over 30,000) while guiding the reader through six turbulent decades of movie production from the 1910's to thepresent. It illuminates the tempermental clashes between stars, directors, and designers and the whole fascinating behind-the-scenes story of the mag nificent costumes that adorned Hollywood's most exciting stars. There is anextensive bibliography, descriptions of the costumes, biographies of desig ners, and an index." - from the dj. McCORMICK, Donald. How to Buy an Island. New York : St. Martin's Press, (1973). Pp. (8),9-196, including plates. Illustrated with many b&w photos. 8vo, brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. George Donald King McCormick, aka Richard Deacon (b. December 11, 1911 – d. January 2, 1998). A handbook for wannabe Crusoes with plenty of cash burning a hole in their pocket, detailing the processes of going about island ownership. "No city-dweller thesedays criticises escapism and every true escapist yearns to own his own isl and—the perfect retreat from the stress of modern life. Mr. McCormick showshow to turn a dream into reality or to add realism to the dream—which is a lso a form of escape. There are islands available the world over for all pockets and tastes, from those in British waters to the Caribbean, from the Mediterranean to the Far East— not only off-shore but in rivers and lakes, as in Nrth America. Island ownership has been enjoyed down the ages. The Emperor Hadrian had his miniature island on which he built a fine villa, and Sir Compton Mackenzie made islands popular by writing Whisky Galore. Above all, an island can contribute to a feeling of independence that has particular appeal today. The author of this charming book is a romantic. But he is also a very practical man and he shows precisely how an island can be acquired, explaining the problems as well as the delights of island life. All the basic information, geographical, fiscal, and legal is provided: how to choose your island -- and there is more to this than simply sticking a pin ona map; how to assess the availability of the basic essentials of life; and the importance of communications, particularly in bad weather. His enthusi asm is infectious, and readers are warned that his book ay cause them to bemore serious about carrying out teir dreams than is immediately convenient . Alternatively, they can sit back and gain knowledge of how to achieve peace and a new way of life that will stand them in good stead now, in their dreams, or later, in reality." - from the dj. New York : Orion Books, (1990). First Printing. Pp (8),ix-xvi,(1),1-453,(1). Illustrated. 4to, black cloth. "A truly international collection - one that represents some 200 artists from a dozencountries - including the Soviet Union, this volume offers a highly charge d look at the harshness of war as never before. mental & unprecedented, Images of War is a stunningly powerful record of war as portrayed by artists. Throughout World War II, from Europe to Africa to the Pacific, artists committed to paper or canvas their unique impressions of the epochal events of which they were a part. These highly personal artworks-from all the combatant nations & most never before published-convey the human meaning of armed conflict in a way that no other medium can. Some of the artists were commissioned by their governments to record important campaigns, while others just felt the need to express their own visions of the war. Only a few were orwould become famous. All, however, created their art out of firsthand expe rience. International in scope, the book includes some 75 artists from 14 countries-chosen from among the thousands and thousands of artworks hanging in juseums and tucked away in archives. Of special note are nearly 50 paintings from the Soviet Union, most never before available to the West. Throughout, the art is married to a carefully chosen text of excerpted eyewitnessaccounts that complement the immediacy of the potent images. In an era whe n history is recorded, shaped, & transmitted with electronic efficiency & mechanical coldness, Images of War reveals human truths about warfare that can only be expressed through the eye & hand of the artist." [...] This is the story of Dermot Troy and of the family that depended on this gay and whimsical dreamer who loved the beauties of nature, but whose spirit could not be tied to the drudgery of the farm. It is the story of Sheila, his daughter, and her love for a renegade whisky-runner, Blaze Corrigal. But is is, above all, the storyof Dermot's son Michael who thought of his father as a god, and whose trus t faltered only briefly, until he learned in a tragic way that his father was indeed a man of his word. A young teacher, Paul Ettinger, has written a novel The Proud and the Passionate, which is little more than a description of its hero's progress from one bedside seduction to another. It is popular with the public, but not with the Board of Governors, whose chairman, Ben Hickman, affects a strict religious morality. The Board decide to dismiss Ettinger on moral grounds — and at once the radical elements of the University Faculty prepare to challenge the right of the Governors to act as self-appointed censors of literature." - Abstract. The discussion is limited to novelists who have written in English; and no attempt is made to examine all the work of any one writer but only such parts of it as are relevant to the subject. "The Trans-Canada Highway is an artery that opens the whole width of the second-widest countryin the world to any adventuring motorist. Approximately 5,000 miles of roa dway span the distance between St. John's, Newfoundland, and Victoria, British Columbia. Edward McCourt set out to travel the length of this highway, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and one result of his trip is a splendid and vivid book. It could be described as a travel book, since it reflects impressions, both favourable and adverse, of Canadian scenery, places, and people. But, more than that, the account is the author's revelation of himself as he reveals his country." - from the dustjacket. Harper and Row, New York, 1972, ISBN:0060129018
McCOY, Alfred W. with Cathleen B. READ and Leonard P. ADAMS II. The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia . New York : Harper and Row, (1972). Book Club Edition. Pp (4),v-xii,(2),1-464,(2) + 24-page photo section. 8vo, rust cloth. "The fabled Golden Triangle, where Laos, Thailand, and Burma meet, long a traditional opium~growing area, now provides 70 percent of the world's illicit supply of heroin. And many elements in the governments of these countries, and in the government of South Vietnam - most of which are supported by U.S. military and financial aid - are deeply (and lucratively) involved in the growing, processing, transport, and distribution of narcotics. Howhas this situation come about? Basing their narrative on firsthand researc h in Asia and Europe, the authors trace the whole story since the end of World War II. They demonstrate that during the First Indochina War (1946~ 1954) the security of Saigon and its environs and the loyalty of the hill tribes depended on profits from and some protection for the opium traffic. Similarly, it became necessary for the United States when it took over the French commitment in 1954, to look the other way in the matter of the involvement in the drug traffic of succeeding Vietnamese regimes. After Diem's downfall in 1963 it became apparent that money from the rackets - especially narcotics - was vital to any regime's survival. The authors found that in Laos, opium crops found their way from the hill villages into a secret base at Long Tieng; in Burma, the CIA financed remnants of Chiang Kai~shek's Nationalist Army, which later became self~supporting by taking over 90 percent ofthe opium shipments from the rebel Shan States of Burma; that in Thailand, shaky regimes relied on American support and opium money to help bolster t heir stability. They also found that the Mafia, working through Corsican criminal syndicates from Marseille, had established outposts in Southeast Asia for its international narcotics smuggling operations during the French occupation. In spite of recent well~publicized seizures of massive shipments of heroin from Southeast Asia, heroin continues to flood the country, spreading into every level of this society and shredding the fabric of everyday life. U.S. government estimates of the number of addicts has leaped from 315,000 in 1969 to over 560,000 in 1972. This book puts all the pieces of this ghastly puzzle together, and then maps the possible avenues out of the horror, suggesting that America may have to choose between our commitments inSoutheast Asia and getting heroin out of our high schools." - from dj. 35856 McCRACKEN, Harold The American Cowboy. First Trade Edition in dustjacket
Doubleday, 1973, 1973 0385049382
McCRACKEN, Harold. The American Cowboy. Garden City, New York : Doubleday & Company, Inc. 1973. First Edition after the Limited Edition of 300 copies. Pp (10),[11]-196, colour frontispiece + 20 colour plates. Also, black-and-white illustrations. Large 8vo [230 x 315 mm], maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

Harold McCracken (b. 1894 - d. 1983) was an American author, Alaskan grizzly bear hunter, biplane stunt photographer, cinematographer, producer and museum director. He was a noted explorer, who led expeditions in the 1920s tracing the possibility of a long-ago land bridge between Siberia and Alaska.

"This book includes reproduction of paintings by Frederic Remington, Edward Borein, George Catlin, Frank Tenney Johnson, Charles M. Russsell, &c.

"Glamorous incidents in the human pageant of history, as they slip farther and farther into the limbo ot the past, sometimes take on an aura that seems more folkiore than fact.... Using historical characters and background, [writers] exaggerate the sensational at the expense of the more credible. This has been particularly true in the case of the American cowboy. It is also an example of the old metaphorical adage that fact can sometimes be more interesting than fiction."

The American Cowboy is a celebration of not only that unique group of men but of the very special world that they created and inhabited. With sympathy and impeccable authority, Harold McCracken records here the origins, development, and achievements of a group of authentic American heroes and pays tribute to their particular place in our national heritage.

Dr. McCracken's book is aiso in part an informal history of the western cattle industry, He traces the lntroduction of the cow and horse in America, a by-product of the Spanish Conquest of the New World, and describes the important role of the Texas longhorn in the development of the fledgling industry.

The original designation of "cowboy," says the author, referred to those Texan adolescents who were forced to take over the stock-handling chores of the home ranch when their older brothers and fathers left for the Civil War. The conflict ended but the skill remained, to help implement the first hazardous longhorn cattle drives up through Indian territory into the Central Plains region and the gateways to the meat-buying East.

Here is the tale of how that territory was opened, bv way of trails including the Chisholm and the Santa Fe, to bring about the birth of such wild and woolly cow towns as Wichita, Abilene, and Dodge City. Mr. McCracken describes in detail the original longhorn cattle and the reasons why the shorthorns eventually replaced them, the exact duties of "swing-riders" and "end-riders," the struggle of the Indians to protect their hunting grounds against "that splendid juggernaut rolling on with its splendid desolation." He tells of how the spread of railroads and the population pressures forced the cattle industry to the undeveloped regions of the Northwest, and how the empires of the cattle barons first burgeoned and then ended as homesteaders invaded the free range.

The American Cowboymemorializes that breed of tough, dedicated men with a demanding mission; now, "the dark curtain of an ever-changing history" has descended, and the voice of the cowboy - sometimes profane, often gentle - is heard mainly in books like this." (from the dj).

35872 McCRONE, Guy Independent Young Man. First Edition in dustjacket
Constable & Company Ltd, London, 1961,
McCRONE, Guy. Independent Young Man. (London) : Constable & Company Ltd, (1961). First Edition. Pp (6),[1]-282. 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt letterine to spine, top edge dyed blue. Guy Fulton McCrone (1898 – 1977) was a Scottish author active from the late 1930s onwards. "The "independent young man" of the title is Will Edsell, a prickly and impecunious lecturer at Glasgow University. He discovers that he is distantly related to the very wealthy and close-knit Glasgow family of the same name, and is introduced into their circle. It is hardly surprising that he should fall in love with the beautifuland charming Rosamond, but that she should love him strikes her family as odd. She does so because he is different, is tougher and more exciting thanthe rich young men whom she normally meets And, it must be admitted, she p ictures' herself as providing (with her own considerable money) an elegant background for the advancement of Will's academic career. Will, oi course, ooes not want to be advanced this way: and the despotic old grandfather Edsell threatens to disinherit Rosamond if she insists on marrying him. Amid the family arguments (in which old Will's much disliked sister-in-law plays a vital part oecause she has a majority holding in the family firm) Will and Rosamond have time to consider the basis of their love - for Rosamond to realise that Will does not want to be managed, for Will to realise how different his world is from Rosamond's. An Independent Young Man is a family novel, in which the characters are real people—the bumbling and gossiping unmarried aunts, the dictatorial grandfather, the tough and sensible widowed Mrs. Edsell who will stand no nonsense from her brother-in-law. It is the work of a novelist who takes immense trouble with his characters and plot, and whose craftsmansnip makes it a pleasure to read." (from the dj). "A quarter of acentury has passed since the death of our father, when these manuscripts w ere committed to our care. Their preparation was begun previous to his retirement from the active duties of the ministry, and completed during his declining years. Our grandfathers public life in Nova Scotia was bound up withthe history of Pictou Academy his private life was largely affected by it. This being so, it was unavoidable that the written story should exhibit mu chof the nature of struggle and strife-the atmosphere in which the lifes work was carried on. Without this setting the narrative would not only be colorless, but wanting in the essential quality. It is owing to this, coupled with our fathers express wish that some time should elapse before publication, because of those whose feelings might be painfully excited thereby, that further action has been so long delayed. In view of the recent celebration of the Centennial of Dalhousie University, and the approaching Centennialof the Presbyterian College, Halifax, the time seems suitable for the disc harge of our trust. Unlike Dr. Jarnes Mc-Gregor, our grandfather kept no diary, but all unknown to him the material which subsequently formed the basis of a large part of these notes was being preserved in his native land. With his college companion, and life long friend, the Rev. John Mit- chell, D. D., of Glasgow, and also with his son, James Mitchell, Esq., he kept up aconstant correspondence, and to the latter, the author was indebted for th e return of letters which have proved so valuable. What the Secession Church in this Province, in its early struggle for education, owed to the unfailing sympathy and practical aid of Dr. Mitchell and his family, it would be difficult to overestimate. Even at this distant date it affords great satisfaction to make this acknowledgment. With the manuscripts have been incorporated some details of purely family interest, and letters bearing upon the establishment of Dalhousie College. While written primarily for the purposeof doing justice to a fathers memory, it is hoped that this volume may hav e an interest for the public because of the light thrown upon the early struggle for education in the Province, and because of the addition to our knowledge of the history of our Church to which the late Rev. George Patterson, D. D., has already made such valuable contribution." - from preface. A few pages have corner sections torn away not affecting text, ow vg to fine copy of an uncommon book. 90.00

"A quarter of a century has passed since the death of our father, when these manuscripts werecommitted to our care. Their preparation was begun previous to his retirem ent from the active duties of the ministry, and completed during his declining years. Our grandfathers public life in Nova Scotia was bound up with the history of Pictou Academy his private life was largely affected by it. This being so, it was unavoidable that the written story should exhibit muchof the nature of struggle and strife-the atmosphere in which the lifes work was carried on. Without this setting the narrative would not only be colorless, but wanting in the essential quality. It is owing to this, coupled with our fathers express wish that some time should elapse before publication, because of those whose feelings might be painfully excited thereby, that f urther action has been so long delayed. In view of the recent celebration of the Centennial of Dalhousie University, and the approaching Centennial ofthe Presbyterian College, Halifax, the time seems suitable for the dischar ge of our trust. Unlike Dr. Jarnes Mc-Gregor, our grandfather kept no diary, but all unknown to him the material which subsequently formed the basis of a large part of these notes was being preserved in his native land. With his college companion, and life long friend, the Rev. John Mit- chell, D. D., of Glasgow, and also with his son, James Mitchell, Esq., he kept up a constant correspondence, and to the latter, the author was indebted for the return of letters which have proved so valuable. What the Secession Church in this Province, in its early struggle for education, owed to the unfailingsympathy and practical aid of Dr. Mitchell and his family, it would be dif ficult to overestimate. Even at this distant date it affords great satisfaction to make this acknowledgment. With the manuscripts have been incorporated some details of purely family interest, and letters bearing upon the establishment of Dalhousie College. While written primarily for the purpose ofdoing justice to a fathers memory, it is hoped that this volume may have a n interest for the public because of the light thrown upon the early struggle for education in the Province, and because of the addition to our knowledge of the history of our Church to which the late Rev. (McCULLOUGH, Hall Park). Hall Park McCullough : Americana Collector 1872-1966. (Lunenburg, Vermont) : Special Collections, Bailey/Howe Library, University of Vermont, 1988. Pp [1]-61,(3),+ 4 plates, frontispiece. 8vo, pale blue card covers, blue lettering to front cover. "The Special Collections department of the University of Vermont's Bailey/Howe Library is pleased to present this inventory of Hall Park McCullough's extra-illustrated copy of Hiland Hall's Early History of Vermont.” (from thr Foreword). “Hall Park McCullough's extra-illustrated copy of Hiland Hall's Early History of Vermont is a wonderful example of a "forgotten" collection brought to light. Begun early in this century, it grew under McCullough’s loving care into a rich set of early American and Vermont primary sources. However, despite their potential research value and undoubted interest for collectors, the manuscripts, maps, prints, and portraits in the collection went unpublicized and virtually unseen from the time McCullough began assembling them until 1983, when the University of Vermont acquired the collection from McCullough's heirs. Today, as an outstanding part of a noteworthy Americana collector's library, the collection provides some interesting insights into the ways in which the leading Americanists of McCullough's time pursued their enthusiasm for the past. For both New England and national collectors, the collection will certainly satisfy the need for proof that "you just can't find material like that today." More importantly, the McCullough nuggets will offer American historians choice new information on late eighteenth century leaders, battles, issues, and events. For these and a variety of other reasons, the McCullough collection is a fascinating body of material.” (from the Introduction). Spine and margins browned, else very good. 18.00
