Yet the Basques are singular in this, that, in the midst of the great revolutions which have agitated the whole of Europe, causing radical changes, levelling to the ground or converting into ruins great empires, powerful nationalities, monuments; sweeping away languages, and even the very races themselves -- the Basques have known how to pass unscathed through the many storms of devastation, preserving intact their nationality, institutions, laws, language, and customs.”(from the Introduction). 38002 MONTELL, William Lynwood MORSE, Mike Ghosts along the Cumberland : Deathlore in the Kentucky Foothills. First Edition in dustjacket
University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville, 1975, ISBN:0870491652
MONTELL, William Lynwood. Ghosts along the Cumberland : Deathlore in the Kentucky Foothills. (Knoxville) : The University of Tennessee Press, (1975). First Edition. Pp (6),[vii]-xiv,(4),[3]-240, frontispiece + 16 pp plates. Map. Index. 8vo, illustrated black cloth, white lettering to spine. "In the region of southcentral Kentucky known as the Eastern Pennyroyal the lore ofdeath and ghosts endures as a great vestige from the past. Until twentieth -century progress intervened, such beliefs and sayings as those quoted above were handed down by word of mouth from one generation to the next. Here, in this area which some longtime residents call the "Pennyrile," burying one's own dead and recounting stories of tlieir return as ghosts were common practices. But the advance of technology, improved communications, and better roads have slowly urbanized a once agrarian people, and the folk cultureof earlier times has been replaced by the ways of life of the current Amer ican midstream. Nevertheless it is still possible to find people here who cling to beliefs in the omens of death and the manifestations ol the supernatural. Even those who were children in the lean years of the thirties recall with a fondness verging on nostalgia what it was like to sit around the fireplace and listen to parents and grandparents swap ghost tales. The traditional deathlore of the earlier inhabitants of the region still fascinates many of those now living there. In Ghosts along the Cumberland William Lynwood Montell uses the techniques of the skilled folklorist to capture an almost-gone way of life in the "Pennyrile," when change rarely occurred, when traditional customs were clung to, and when people enjoyed talking about old times and serving as chroniclers of the past to the present. He and his former students have recorded the actual words of these people, letting themliterally tell it like it was. In searching out and collecting these linge ring oral traditions, in relating them to the culture which produced or nurtured them, and in collating them with persistent items of folk traditions found elsewhere, his work will be a model for similar comparative studies of folk belief systems found in other regions of fhe country." (from the dj). Contents : Part I - Omens of Death : Introduction to Omens of Death; Death Omen Naratives. Part II - The Dead :Introduction to the Dead; Folk Beliefs Associated with the Dead. 38003 MONTER, E. William. Calvin's Geneva.
John Wiley & Sons, New York , 1967,
MONTER, E. William. Calvin's Geneva. New York : John Wiley & Sons, Inc., (1967). Pp [i]-xv,(1),1-250,(6). Index. 8vo, illustrated black card covers. In the New Dimensions in History : Historical Cities series. “For over four hundred years, the city of Geneva has been important in Western history. The character of this city—steady, serious, erudite, clannish, and proud - has remained virtually unchanged since Calvin's time, the heroic age when Geneva first became famous. Professor Monter relates the "success story" of this fascinating city through a fresh synthesis of printed and archival sources. In the sixteenth century, Geneva succeeded in winning and maintaining her independence, a feat unique in Reformation Europe. Into this special environment came Calvm—and his triumph was the result of a brilliant mind and an undeviating will being placed in the midst of the crude and confused surroundings of a revolutionary commune. Professor Monter explores the components of Geneva's and Calvin's fame in a number of ways. First, he death in 1564, showing the tumultuous environment of the city where Calvin worked andthe means by which local opposition to Calvin dissolved. He next describes the principal institutions and social groups of Calvin's Geneva: the estab lished church, the civil government, and the foreign refugee communities. Finally, he assesses Calvin's legacy to Geneva and discusses the workings ofCalvinism after its founder's death. As a whole, Calvin's Geneva is a reve aling portrait of u major city and an acute analysis of its effect on one of the most important men of the sixteenth century.” - from the back cover. Illustrated. Maps. Index. 8vo, orange-red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "The salmon that symbolize the Pacific Northwest's natural splendor are now threatened with extinction acrossmuch of their ancestral range. In studying the natural and human forces th at shape the rivers and mountains of that region, geologist David Montgomery has learned to see the evolution and near-extinction of the salmon as a story of changing landscapes. Montgomery shows how a succession of historical experiences -first in the United Kingdom, then in New England, and now inthe Pacific Northwest -repeat a disheartening story in which overfishing a nd sweeping changes to rivers and seas render the world inhospitable to salmon. In King of Fish, Montgomery traces the human impacts on salmon over the last thousand years and examines the implications both for salmon recovery efforts and for the more general problem of human impacts on the natural world. What does it say for the long-term prospects of the world's many endangered species if one of the most prosperous regions of the richest country on earth cannot accommodate its icon species? All too aware of the possible bleak outcome for the salmon, King of Fish concludes with provocative recommendations for reinventing the ways in which we make environmental decisions about land, water, and fish." He sees her when he is walking in the woods and hears her playing the violin. He visits her a number of times and gradually falls in love with her. When he proposes she rejects him, eventhough she loves him in return, believing that her disability will only hi nder his life if they were married, despite his protests that it wouldn't matter at all. Meanwhile, Eric's good friend David who is a renowned throat doctor, comes to the island and visits Eric. He examines Kilmeny, and says that nothing will cure her but an extreme psychological need to speak. Thisneed comes soon when Neil Gordon, who is in love with Kilmeny and madly je alous of Eric, comes behind Eric with an axe, meaning to kill him. Lucy Maud Montgomery, OBE (b. November 30, 1874, Clifton, Prince Edward Island – d. April 24, 1942, Toronto).

A brief mid-life memoir by the creator of the Anne of Green Gables series.

"Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of Anne of Green Gables, wrote this charming autobiographical memoir in mid-career. It is the most complete account of her childhood and early years as a writer. It originally appeared as a series of magazine articles in 1917.

'The Alpine Path' refers to her long climb to success. She began in childhood and never wavered in her resolve to become an accomplished professional writer. The remarkable success that came with the publication of Anne of Green Gables (which was rejected by many publishers), its sequels and her other works, was the result of many years of hard steady work.

All those who have enjoyed the Anne books will be fascinated by this intimate background story by the author. Those who love Prince Edward Island will be delighted by her descriptions of the countryside and its people. No one who reads The Alpine Path can fail to be impressed by the personal appeal of L.M. Montgomery."- from the rear.

Russell 630.

"All who have read and loved Anne of Green Gables will be delighted to return to its setting with this recently discovered collection of fourteen stories by L.M. Montgomery. Anne whom we've met in so many of the author's previous books, is married and has grown-up children of their own. But she still recalls the strange and funny tales and bits of gossip she heard as a child.

These stories have their heart in Lucy Maud Montgomery's love for the drama and comedy in the villages and country houses surrounding the Blythe family home in Avonlea. Some are tender romances, others accounts of vengeance; some have a touch of the gothic, others are sprinkled with humour; some of the settings are familiar, others are places we've never walked before. But all of these stories, and the memories from which the author pieces them together, add to our picture of L.M. Montgomery's greatest source of inspiration - the people of The Island."- from jacket.

"Considering our long association with Anne and many other characters from Lucy Maud's later books, this posthumous publication of fourteen previously unpublished stories takes place with a certain amount of excitement and pride on our part. The original manuscript of this book was located by Dr. Stuart MacDonald, the author's son, among her letters, personal papers, and other effects. It bore the title, "The Blythes Are Quoted.". It is difficult to place these stories into any exact chronology with the author's other works, but internal evidence and interpretation ot the author's persona, Mrs. Blytne, or more familiarly, Anne — now married and the mother of grown-up children ot her own — seems to place this work into the immediate pre-World World War II period.

The original manuscript was divided into two parts, each part composed of a narrative introduction describing an evening in the Blythe household when the family would sit around the fireside and listen to poems and stories. For the purposes of this book, which we have titled The Road to Yesterday, all but one of the poems have been deleted, and the sequence of the stories has been reorganized. - from the Publisher's Foreword.

The final novel in Montgomery's "Anne" series.

"Rilla is the youngest of the Ingleside children, and combines charm and competence to an admirable degree. Rilla grew up in the era of the first World War, and is a symbol of its activity on the 'home front' -- its feverish plans, its determined optimism, its courage, its steadfastness. Here is a lively and an accurate picture of a time that has passed -- a time in which people lived, loved and suffered without the advantages of radio, aeroplane or the various improvements evidenced in the Atomic Age. 'Rilla of Ingleside', in addition to being a first-rate story, possesses a certain documentary value." - from the dj.

"Anne (with an e, of course) starts out as a mistake. The elderly Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert had planned on adopting a boy to help Matthew with the chores on their Prince Edward Island farm. What are they to do with the red-haired, high-spirited girl who arrives instead? The Cuthberts' doubts are borne out as Anne falls into one 'ever-so-tragical' adventure after another. But slowly, with her boundless imagination and heart, Anne Shirley comes to bring joy into the narrow lives of those around her -- and into the lives of readers who have delighted in her exploits since lucy Maud Montgomery began writing about her in 1905. Over the years, the irresistible Anne has become one of literature's most beloved characters, winner admirers around the world.

This beautifully illustrated volume - with a foreword by Kate Macdonald Butler, one of L.M. Montgomery's grandchildren -- is a treasure for those who find in Anne a familiar friend as well as for those who are discovering this 'kindred spirit' for the very first time." - from the dustjacket.

It was a Platonic attachment on both sides, but so vital was the comradeship that the correspondence thus begun in 1902 ceased only with her last illness nearly forty years later." - from the introduction. Yet despite her literary fame, Maud Montgomery is little known as a person. She is so thoroughly identified with her famous heroine that the creator runs the risk of being overshadowd by her creation. 'Anne', of course, is not autobiographical, but it is hard not to believe that the trials and tribulations of that spunky little orphan do not reveal the inner longings and aspirations of the Maud Montgomery who was born in the tiny P.E.I. village of Clifton in 1874, and grew up in Cavendish, on the north shore of the island. Nor didMaud Montgomery offer the world an alternative vision of herself; she alwa ys avoided talking publicly about herself in any depth or detail. Fortunately, during most of her lifetime she carried on a private correspondence with two men - true kindred spirits - Ephraim Weber, a schoolteacher in Saskatchewan, and George Boyd MacMillan, a journalist in Alloa , Scotland. The Weber letters have long been lodged in the Public Archives of Canada. The MacMillan letters vanished. In a remarkable feat of literary detective work Mollie Gillen has tracked down and rescued this treasure trove of some eightylo ng letters from its dusty resting place - a trunk which had passed into the possession of MacMillan's nephew. The Maud Montgomery revealed by the MacMillan letters is a complex, contradictory figure. A self-reliant young woman who successfully tri ed her hand at both teaching and journalism, sheabandoned her independent existence and returned to the rural isolation of Cavendish to care for her widowed grandmother through thirteen long years. A sensitive poet, she was also a hardboiled profe ssional writer who knew how to grit her teeth and produce for the market - and rejoice when the cheque came in. A passionate free spirit, she married Presbyterian minister Ewan Macdonald and imposed on herself the strict and confining role of minis ter's wife. L.M. Illustrated. 8vo, maroon boards. Dj adds : 18 newly discovered stories. "L.M. Montgomery never use the phrase 'And so they lived happily ever after,' but from the numer of stories and novels she ended with awedding, one might almost think that she believed in that old fairytale co nclusion. However, she knew from her own experience that 'happily ever after' was the exception rather than the rule. So why did she write conventional romantic endings? For several reasons, among them the desire to earn money by providing what her readers demanded; a respect for the literary tradition of the comedic happy ending; a recognition of the social circumstances of most women and how difficult it was for them to remain single and independent; and her own personal taste. The stories collected here depict a wonderful assortment of Montgomery's strong and independent 'old maids' who have not been pining for Prince Charming, and for whom marriage is a pleasant addition to a perfectly satisfactory life. There are a number of younger heroes and heroines too, whose courtships are complicated by lovers' misunderstandings or obstinate parents. Montgomery manages to get them all out of their difficulties in various clever and amusing ways." - from the dustjacket. First Printing. Pp (6),vii-xii,1-212,+ 8 pp.photos. 8vo, beige paper-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. "Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the ever-popular 'Anne of Green Gables' was a keen letter-writer. Her letters to George Boyd MacMillan over their thirty-nine year friendship show the full range of her interests, from domestic concerns, her cats and gardening, to her professional literary career as best-selling author. She shares with MacMillan the joys and burdens of her life. She is proud of her two sons and is excited by new inventions such as motor cars and talkies. At the same time, she is saddened by the encroachment of 'progress' on her idyllic, rural Prince Edward Island. She agonizes over the campaigns of the two World Wars and never recovers completely from the death of her closest friend. During her friendship with MacMillan, L.M. Montgomery changes from a confident and cheerful young woman to a disillusioned but courageous old woman. After her retirement to 'Journey's End' in Toronto, distraught by family problems and depressed by the Second World War, her health and spirits fail. These letters will delight all readers of Lucy Maud Montgomery's books. They reveal the character of one of ourbest-known authors; charming, witty, sometimes gloomy and morbid, she was above all stimulating." - from the dustjacket. Very good in dustjacket. 25.00

When she wrote the first entry in thisvolume she had recently become a world-famous author, having published 'An ne of Green Gables' in 1908. Here we become privy to her response to the death of her grandmother, who had restricted her life severely; her marriage and honeymoon trip to Scotland and England; and her departure from Prince Edward Island to the new restrictions of her life as the wife of a Presbyterian minister in an Ontario village. Montgomery reveals the intensities of friendship, the minutiae of home-making, the joys of motherhood along with the traumas of a disturbed marraige, and records the sources and compositionof the 'Anne' series and the emergence of her new heroine 'Emily'." -from the dj. Toronto / Oxford / New York: Oxford University Press, 1998. First Printing. Pp. (5),vi-xxxi,(1),1-439,(1). 8vo, maroon cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "The fourth volume of the immensely successful 'Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' covers the years from 1929 to 1935, a tumultuous period in the writer's life. By 1929 she was 54 years old and known world-wide as the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' and many other books, yet this was also a time of numerous setbacks: the stock market crash, a drop in royalties from her many books, the need to provide her two sonswith a university education while her husband's modest church salary was o ften in arrears, and the fact that many loans she made to friends and family were not repaid. She faced personal crises in relations with her sons andher husband and there was furious controversy in her husband's parish, Nor val Presbyterian Church. She also felt concerns over her own mental state and she became the unwilling object of a young woman's declaration of passionate love. Yet this was not a period without joy: the volume opens with happy travels to Prince Edward Island and western Canada and ends with her looking forward with great excitement to a new life in Toronto." - from the dustjacket. [...] Volume II records a time of great change and upheaval both in Montgomery's life and in society. When she wrote the first entry in this volume she had recently become a world-famous author, having published 'Anne of Green Gables' in 1908. Here we become privy to her response to the death of her grandmother, who had restricted her life severely; her marriage and honeymoon trip to Scotland and England; andher departure from Prince Edward Island to the new restrictions of her lif e as the wife of a Presbyterian minister in an Ontario village.Montgomery reveals the intensities of friendship, the minutiae of home-making, the joysof motherhood along with the traumas of a disturbed marriage, and records the sources and composition of the 'Anne' series and the emergence of her new heroine 'Emily'. [...] In the 1920s, Montgomery is in mature mid-life, and her personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex. Montgomery juggles the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and family, appeals by her PEI clan for advice and assistance -- everyday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties. [ ...] The final volume [...] covers the years from 1935 to 1942, the year ofMontgomery's death. It completes the story of a gifted creative writer who was also wife, mother, community leader, and public figure. No longer dwel ling in a farm community or a small rural village, Lucy Maud Montgomery explored life in downtown Toronto and turned her journals into the unprecedented diary of a suburban housewife. Here she experienced the cultural riches the city had to offer while finding friendship and neighbourliness in the suburb of Swansea, where she and her husband settled when he retired. The journal chronicles her hopes and satisfaction with her new home and neighbourhood, but also her struggles with her own and her husband's recurring boutsof depression. It also reflects a growing friction between generations as tensions between herself and her sons, Chester and Stuart, began to dominate her later years. Family life could boil up in disturbing ways, resulting in gaps and evasions in her journals." - from the dustjacket. Very good in dustjackets.
