Collins, London, 1940,
NIVEN, Frederick. Mine Inheritance. London : Collins, (1940). Pp (10),11-432. Endpaper Maps. 8vo, red cloth, black lettering to spine.

Watters p.353, Rhodenizer pp.747-748, ("with title from Psalm 16:5 and setting in the Red River settlement, the first Canadaian novel selected by the Book Society in Great Britain"), Drew, Lawmen in Scarlet : An Annotated Guide to Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Print and Performance. p.88.

"It was in the spring of the year 1811 that Thomas Douglas. Earl of Selkirk, and Captain Miles Macdonell sat in the study of the Earl's London house. On the table between them lay a map [...] . It was a map of Canada, and there, on the banks of the Red River, Lord Selkirk pointed out the tract of land known as Assiniboia which he had purchased from the Hudson's Bay Company in order to found a settlement, a colony, for the Highlanders who were then being evicted from their small crofts to make room for sheep. - It is this story of the first important British settlement in the Canadian West, this epic in the history of Canada, that Mr. Niven tells in Mine Inheritance. In times such as these [during WW2], there is a profound significance inthis story of the first opening up of the Canadian West, the adaptation of life to adverse conditions, the will to live freely and at peace." - from the dj.

Collins, London, 1935,
NIVEN, Frederick. The Flying Years. London : Collins, (February) 1935. Second Impression. Pp (4),5-284. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Watters p. 353, Rhodenizer pp. 747 ("a story of pioneerin g in the West"), Drew, Lawmen in Scarlet : An Annotated Guide to Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Print and Performance. p.88. "In this novel Mr. Frederick Niven's characters move against a background of changing years. Its opening scenes are in Scotland and the hardly known Canadian West of a generation sgo. It is a story of the exiled and evicted in a strange land — and what they made of it and of themselves. Such has been the celerity of change there, that in the lifetime of one man we hear the lowing of the buffalo herds, the cries of the hunters and the shrill sound of the Red River carts fade away over the horizon, giving place to tne locomotive's hoot and the drone, overhead, of the aeroplane. Against the background of the flying years, the background ofTime and Eternity, go transient men — with their ambitions, their loves, t heir hopes, their regrets, there three-score and ten of fugitive experience, their nostalgia -- as in a shadow-show." (from the dj). Fading to both boards, else very good in an attractive dustjacket (spine faded and spine ends chipped). 100.00

NIVEN, Laird. Birchtown Archaeological Survey (1993) : The Black Loyalist Settlement of Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Lockeport, N.S.: Roseway Publishing Company, 1994. Pp (4),i-vi,1-78. Illustrated. Maps. 4to, illustrated blue card covers. Abstract : "The aim of this survey was to record and preserve the historic resources associated with the original Black Loyalist settlement of Birchtown, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. The survey succeeded in identifying 20 features, ranging from shallow depressions to largestone cellars, dating from the last quarter of the 18th to the 20th centur ies. Large stone walls were noted throughout the study area as well as two wall complexes of uncertain function. It was concluded that the area is rich in archaeological resources which are under-studied, not very visible, and, therefore, very fragile. It is important to continue work in this area in order to preserve the Black heritage sites of Shelburne County and to educate the public about the historical contribution of Black Nova Scotians. The data gathered will contribute to the growing database of Nova Scotia's Black heritage and will be of use to scholars both in Canada and the United States." Small 8vo, illustr ated card covers, white spine, white lettering to front cover, black lettering to spine. Mass market paperback. "The latest collection from a writer whose stature as science fiction's finest hardcore s.f. author is now well established... From the beginning, Larry Niven's work showed the kind of thoughtful, studied detail which is the hallmark of a powerful imagination at work behind concepts that are totally original. The present colection contains stories from all of Niven's wholly created worlds, plus non-fiction articles on teleportation and time-travel, plus several other short delights, plus stories which have never appeared in print before. (One of these -- atleast -- ought to win some kind of award for the most outrageous humor yet ). All in all, a collection which amply demonstrates the rich development of a very talented writer." - from rear. (4),[5]-288, portrait frontis+ 12 pp plates. Maps. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, silver lettering to spine. “ In May 1926 the whole world was astonished to learn that a small airship, the Norge, under the command of the Italian engineer and explorer General Umberto Nobile had flown from Rome to the North Pole and from the North Pole across a hitherto unexplored lands to Alaska. On his journey, which is known in the history of polar expeditions as the '[Amundsen - Ellsworth - Nobile Transpolar Flight' (Roald Amundsen initiated the expeidtion, the AmericanLincoln Ellsworth backed it), the Northern Polar Sea was discovered and cr ossed by man for the first time. Two years later Nobile, commanding the airship Italia, explored the unknown regions of the north and on May 24th, 1928, reached the Pole for the second time. On the flight, after fighting for thirty hours against storms, the Italia, overcome by the forces of nature, crashed on the pack-ice. This book, written by Nobile hismelf, tells for the first time the full story of the daring venture of the Norge and the thrilling drama of the Italia -- the accident, the dramatic struggle for survival, and the successful rescue efforts that caught the imagination of the entire world. It is a moving record of bold enterprise, hardship, and adversity gallantly endured, and ranks high in the annals of adventure and polar expeditions." - from the dj. Pp [i]-xii,1-227,(1),+ 8 pp photos. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, silver lettering to spine. "As the sun began to set on June 5, 1944-The night before D-Day - members of Canada's elite paratroop force, the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, prepared for their maiden jump into battle. These paratroopers, whose average age was twenty-two, were non-professional soldiers who had answered the call to arms out of a sense of duty. They went on to serve their country with distinction, and those who survived the war returned home to enjoy a peace that had been won with such tremendous sacrifices. The members of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion were in the forefront of two of the biggest Allied airborne operations of the Second World War. They were among the first troops to land on French soil and the first paratroopers to jump into Germany. In six weeks, the battalion covered threehundred miles, mostly on foot, in a breathtaking campaign from the Rhine t o the Baltic. Airborne traces the battalion's history from the rigorous training sessions at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Camp Shilo, Manitoba, through the daring operations in the final decisive days of the war, and finally, to the glorious homecoming in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At the heart of the bookare the compelling, tragic, and sometimes humorous tales of the paratroop veterans. Based on scores of interviews, personal diaries, archival records, and civilian accounts, Airborne vividly recreates the terrifying night drop through a tracer-laden sky into France and the perilous daylight drop into Germany. Airborne is the true story of a proud and dedicated group of Canadians, and the honors they won on the battlefields of Europe in one of history's darkest hours." - from the dj. NOLAN, John S. Sir John Norreys and the Elizabethan Military World. (Exeter, Devon) : University of Exeter Press, (1997). First Printing. Pp. (7),viii-[x],1-326. With maps and illustrations to text. 8vo, black cloth with giltlettering to spine. "'Sir John Norreys and the Elizabethan Military World' is the first biography of Elizabeth I's most trusted soldier, a man who wa s at one time heralded as the military hero of Protestant Europe and considered as important as Drake and Ralegh. His career included mercenary service in the Netherlands, colonizing projects in Ireland, the organization of England's land defences against the Armada of 1588, command of English forces in the Brittany campaign of 1590-94 and the formation of a joint stock company with Sir Francis Drake to finance an invasion of Spain and Portugal in 1589. Incorporating English, Irish, Belgian, Dutch, Spanish and French archival material, including a number of previously unexploited English sources such as his personal papers in the Bodleian Library, the book chroniclesNorreys's life between 1570 and 1600, examining how he built on his family 's personal friendship with Elizabeth to navigate the treacherous waters ofthe court and rise to prominence as a warrior and diplomat. The life of Si r John Norreys is a tale of ambition, rivalry, corruption, violence and achievement typical of the nobility of the Elizabethan age, and provides a marvellous 'grand tour' of western Europe in a time of budding imperialism, religious hatred, international intrigue and military innovation." - from thedustjacket. (NOLAND, Kenneth). Kenneth Noland : Handmade Papers. Text by Judith Goldman. Bedford Village, N.Y.: Tyler Graphics Ltd., 1978. Pp (32). Illustrated. Large 8vo, pale green card covers, lettered in black and red. "From April toAugust 1978, Kenneth Noland made images out of paper at Tyler Graphics in Bedford, New York. Working with oriental and western fibers and bits of colored paper, he produced over 200 images. The results were staggering. At first glance, many images seem quite like each other. But no two are the same. Colors vary from filmy blues and bright yellows to soft purples and murkvgreys. Textures range from wafer-thin oriental surfaces to surfaces, thick as encrusted cardboard. In some pieces, image prevails; in some, structure does. Papermaking is never the point; for Noland, it is a way to explore c olor and create texture." (p. [5]). Go on to Azerbaid zhani Dill Pilaf, Beef Bitky, Caucasian Stuffed Vine Leaves or Chicken Sobko. Sample the sauces and finish off your meal with Vatrushka, Mazurka or Smetanik, with perhaps a bit of Halva afterward. And at Eastertime take a flower pot and make a rich Paskha. 40588 NORMAN, Edward Roman Catholic Church : An Illustrated History. First edition in dustjacket.
University of California Press, Berkeley, 2007,
NORMAN, Edward. The Roman Catholic Church : An Illustrated History. Berkeley & Los Angeles : University of California Press, (2007). First Printing. (6),[7]-192. Large 8vo, red cloth. "The history of the Roman Catholic Churchis a gateway to understanding two thousand years of Western - and at times world - civilization. Edward Norman's lavishly illustrated, incisive accou nt, sure to become a classic, tells the story of the multifarious ways in which the Church has shaped the lives and beliefs of Christians and non-Christians alike. It is partly a story of remarkable people, from the greatest theologian of the early Church, St. Augustine, to one of the greatest figures of the modern age, Mother Teresa of Calcutta. It is also a story rich insymbols, not least the awe-inspiring basilica built over the tomb of St. P eter in Rome, the most recognizable church in the world. But the focus of the book is a historical account of epic proportions. Here we discover how Rome became the heart of the Roman Catholic religion and played a role in transforming Western Europe into Christendom. We gain a view of the Crusades undistorted by today's agendas, explore the Counter-Reformation as the fruit of the venerable Catholic reforming tradition, and witness the beginning of a new 500-year history, in which missionaries took their message to Latin America and the East. And, in this boldly uplifting account, we come to see how the Church, reflecting the vision of the Second Vatican Council in 1962, today embodies Christ's own injunction to 'teach all nations'." - from the dj. Chapters : 1. Catholic Origins; 2. The Separation of East and West;3. Medieval Panorama; 4, Reformation; 5. Teach All Nations; 6. The Church and the Modern State; 7. Uncertain Frontiers. With index.
