ORING, Elliott. Jokes and Their Relations. (Lexington, KY): University Press of Kentucky, (1992). First Printing. Pp. (8),[ix]-xii,[1]-171,(1). 8vo, brown cloth with metallic red lettering to spine. "Almost everyone tells andappreciates jokes. Yet the nature of jokes has proved elusive. When asked what they really mean, people tend to 'laugh off' the question, dismissing jokes as meaningless or too obvious to require explanation. Of those who have seriously sought to understand humor, most have explained jokes as expressions of aggression -- a socially acceptable way of showing contempot and displaying superiority. In this book, Elliott Oring offers a fresh perspective on jokes and related forms of humor. Criticizing and modifying traditional concepts and methods of analysis, he delineates an approach that can explain the peculiarities of a wide variety of humorous expression." - from the dustjacket. ORKIN, Ruth. A Photo Journal. New York : A Studio Book / The Viking Press, (1981). First Edition. Pp (7),8-152. Illustrated. 4to, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Ruth Orkin grew up in Hollywood during its heyday of the 1920s and 30s. The daughter of a silent-film actress, she became interested in movies and photography at an early age, and in 1944 she moved to New York to start her career as a photojournalist. In the years that followed, her work appeared in many major magazines: Life, Look, Ladies' Home Journal, McCall's, Cosmopolitan, Ms., New York, Esquire, Horizon, Popular Photography, Modern Photography, and U.S. Camera. In 1953 she won third prize in Life magazine's first photography contest. In the same year she received the Silver Lion of San Marco at the Venice Film Festival for codirecting the feature film Little Fugitive, which was also nominated for an Academy Award and credited by Francois Truffaut for having started the new wave in French cinema. In a 1959 nationwide poll of photography editors and critics, Ruth Orkin was voted one of the "Top Ten Women Photographers in the United States," along with Margaret Bourke-White, Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange, and others. Ruth Orkin's first book, A World Through My Window, was published in 1978 and was hailed by The New York Times as a "a vinuusu jjcnormance.'' This, her second book, is a major retrospective of her work, comprising over 160 black-and-white and 8 color photographs, many of which have never been published before. Most of the photographs date from Ms. Orkin's journalistic career but also included are photographs taken during her teenage yearsand those that she made as a labor of love rather than for professional re asons. Together they form an e oquent autobiographical statement in which we can not only observe but also participate in the development of a world-famous American photographer. " (from the dj). Told with a heightened naturalism in which our thought and speech processes are reproduced with an amazing fidelity, the book may baffle and even infuriate, Yet it makes its presence felt, forcing us, almost as if against our will, to conclude wehave here something very important to the heritage of modern literature. T here are two essential themes running concurrently through this monumental work, both related to the protagonist, Lee Emanuel. On the one hand we havehis passion for the fifteen-year-old Rena Goldstein, and the subtle opposi tions to this passion by both families. On the other hand we have the storyof the death-in-progress of Lee's father, Levi Emanuel. With Lee's second marriage, the strands of the parallel themes convulse, separate, re-form, and intertwine. In the relating of the several events and themes that springfrom the fusion of the two central threads, time and characters seem to me rge so that "all time is eternally present" and the people are alike, one unto the other. The physical scene is Philadelphia, with constant shuttling to New York and Los Angeles. " (from the dj). ORLOVSKY, Daniel T. The Limits of Reform : The Ministry of Internal Affairsin Imperial Russia, 1802-1881. Cambridge, Massachusetts / London, England : Harvard University Press, 1981. First Edition. Pp (6),[vii]-viii,(2),]1]-299,(1). Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Russian Research Center Studies, 18. "One of prerevolutionary Russia's most prominent government institutions— the Ministry of Internal Affairs—is here analyzed from awhollv new perspective. Mr. Orlovsky examines the structure and personnel of this powerful institution to determine how they interacted and influenced domestic policy and political conflict. This institutional approach, not undertaken in any previous studies, tells us much about the history of lateimperial Russia and its bureaucratic institutions. The Ministry of Interna l Affairs (MVD) had a leading part in the 1861 emancipation of the serfs and the 1864 creation of the zemstvo organs of local self-government. By the mid-1860s the MVD directly controlled provincial and district administration and police, censorship, affairs of the nonorthodox religions, orthodox sects, public health and welfare, and a significant number of other economic and social matters. At the heieht of the Refform Era, the MVD was virtuallya state within a state. But its role changed rapicdly—from haven for progr essive bureaucrats, to conservative supporter of autocracy and the landed gentry and uncompromising upholder of administrative power. The backlog of incomplete reforms and policies, structural weaknesses in goverrnment, and conservative statist ideology passed on to successor governments after 1881 had a profound influence on the course of Russian history. Thus, the ReformEra and its immediate aftenrmath offer clues for understanding the revolut ictionaary upheavals in the early twentieth century and for comparing the parallel experiences of other conservative renovating regimes in Europe and Asia." Index. 8vo, blue cloth, silver lettering tospine. In The Fisherman's Library series. "This book is based on a fine se ries of lectures delivered by Dr. A. P. Orr in 1957, but unfortunately he died before he had enlarged and completed the manuscript for book publication. The development and increased use of sea foods was a subjed near his heart and he enjoyed taking parrt in the fish-farming experiment in a Scottishsealoch during the war. That, and related work elsewhere, is described and commented on in this book which also gives a useful summary of the essenti al elements contributing to the fertility of the sea. Dr. Orr will be remembered as a pioneer in studies of the relationships between seawater and theplants and animals adrift in it; here he explains the background to the va ried chains of life which are so fascinating to trace out and which end eventually in the fisherman's commercial catch. Of particular value and interest to readers is the fine quality of the illustrations. The art section contains an outstanding set of photographs of phytoplankton and zooplankton life with keys for their identification. Enlargements are also given of a number of the more important species of zooplankton. There are seven chapters covering the sea as a medium for plant growth, phytoplankton, primary production, zooplankton, zooplankton production, some food chains and productionof fish and shellfish. The final preparation of Dr. Orr's manuscript for b ook publication was undertaken by Dr. S. M. Marshall, a colleague at Millport."from the dj). Contents : 1. The Sea as a Medium for Plant Growth. 2. "This is the story of the settlement and developmentof one of Ontario's unique geographic and econ omic regions, Lake Huron's stormy eastern shore, from Grand Bend in the south to Southampton in the north. Populated by native peoples for thousands of years, and surveyed for the British Admiralty in 1822 by the famous Henry Wolsey Bayfield, this strikingly scenic region became the home to a diverse range of hard-working settlers and flamboyant entrepreneurs. Writer-historian Sandra Orr tells the fascinating tale of the building of eastern Lake Huron's determined port communities and of their residents's truggle to survive all manner of pioneer hardships and lake-borne disasters. Huron: Grand Bend to Southhampton is a celebration of the region's hard times, heyday and heroes. "Many people have written about love, and in fact almost everyone imagines himself an expert on the subject. Stendhal in particular is considered an authority; but Ortega y Gasset, while conceding his literary merit, dismisseshis famous theory of 'crystallisation', and prefers Plato, who declared th at love is a movement of our soul towards something which, in sopme way, wejudge to be perfect. Fenwick, George Orwell: A Bibliography, A.6c.

"Here is a first-hand account of the Spanish Civil War by a man who fought and was wounded in it. it. Fortunately for us, he also happened to be a man who had a better grasp of contemporary history than perhaps any other man of our time. In Homage to Catalonia George Orwell, with his uncompromising honesty, spells out for the first time the manner in which the Communists, directed from Moscow, betrayed the Loyalist forces. It is a tribute to Orwell that when the book first appeared in England in 1938, the Communists instantly recognized him as an eloquent and dangerous foe. It was during this period in Spain that Orwell learned for himself — he had come to distrust the journalism of the era - the function of totalitarianism in practice, whether of the right or the left. In this sense, Homage to Catalonia is a forerunner to his great novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four." - from the dj.

In the History, Science, and Politics series. "In recent years, no program intended to benefit the public has provoked such controversial publicity as the "swine flu" program of 1976. The four contributors to this volume provide a historical perspective and an up-to-date evaluation of the underlying events which led to the program. Historian Alfred W. Crosby of the University of Texas affords a factual and often startling evocation of the magnitude of the 1918-1919 pandemic. June Osborn, a member of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Advisory Panel on Viral and Rickettsial Vaccines, and J. Donald Millar, who directed the participation of the Center for Disease Control in the National Influenza Immunization Program of 1976, discuss in detail the scientific and biomedical considerations which supported much of the original decision making in Washington. The political history of the legislation that put a national immunization program in motion is examined by Arthur Viseltear of Yale University's School of Medicine & Public Health. That legislation and the subsequent tribulations of the program and adverse publicity will have far-reaching effectson any future programs in preventive medicine and public health." (from th e dj). University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1990, ISBN:0802058434
OSMOND, Rosalie. Mutual Accusation : Seventeenth-Century Body and Soul Dialogues in Their Literary and Theological Context. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, (1990). First Edition. Pp. (8),[ix]-xiii,(3),[3]-284,(6). 8vo, decorated grey cloth with brown lettering to spine. "Dualism, unlike monism, is a system that allows for dyanmic and dramatic possibilities. Just as it can explain change and imperfection in the natural world, as the two distinct elements of amtter and spirit or matter and form strive to accomodate themselves to one another, so in the little world of the human the two elements of body and soul generate conflict as well. Essential to one another and yet incompatible, they provide both an explanation of and a metaphor forthe internal, psychological struggle that the individual feels going on wi thin. The body and soul dialogues portray this tradition of conflict in itsmost fundamental form. They bring together psychological concerns about th e nature of humanity and theological concerns about the responsibility for sin. They provide the conceptual centre from which the multiple metaphors and analogies in the rest of the literature radiate. Rosalie Osmond examinesboth literal and metaphorical aspects of the relationship between body and soul in seventeenth-century literature and their significance within a pri marily dualistic philosophy." - from the dust jacket. The people of Waldenstein, a tiny, isolated German community in early 20th-century Nova Scotia, survive lives of intolerable hardship through their unquestioning belief in a pre-Enlightenment Lutheranism. But when the most prominent man in the community fathers the child of his neighbour's daughter, Erika, and a new clergyman from Europe arrives to shake the certainties of faith, their firm ideas are overturned. Erika flees to England, to encounter her own uncertainties there, and years later her son, obsessed with finding his father, comes back to confront both the changing world of Waldenstein and his half-siblings." - from the rearcover.
