Tennyson 1339, Tennyson, Cape Bretoniana, 4590, Watters p.370, Laugher p.469. A novel of Cape Breton, set in "Rington", "a town of 20,000 people most of whom were engaged in the coal-mining and steel industries". "It has been my endeavour in the follwing chapters to prove that the Catholic citizenof our country is a good citizen, and that the ideals underlying the Catho lic school movement are in perfect accord with the ideals of every Christian patriot worthy of the name in our land today. "For my purpose, I have taken a small square from the tapestry of present-day Canadian life. I have separated the warp from the woof, by selecting a couple of typical families, and a number of characters typical of those to be readily found in any Canadian community today. To the families, and to the various characters, I have applied the acid test of adversity: bereavement, poverty and loss of reputation: while I subjected the whole sample of fabric to the gruelling test of an industrial upheaval." - from the foreword. Duncan Joseph Rankin, P.P. of Iona, C.B., was born on December 16, 1874, on a farm in InvernessCounty, at a place then called Cape Mabou and now South Highlands."- dj fl ap of Our Ain Folk and Others. RANKIN, Janet M. and Marie L. CAMPBELL. Managing to Nurse : Inside Canada'sHealth Care Reform. Toronto / Buffalo / London: University of Toronto Pres s, (2006). First Paperback Printing. Pp. (12),[3]-222. 8vo, illustrated blue and black card covers, blue and white lettering to front cover and spine."How does the restructuring of health care in Canada affect nursing practi ce? Increasingly since the 1970s, and especially under recent reforms, a new style of information-supported, professionally based management has been implemented in Canadian health care. In 'Managing to Nurse', Janet M. Rankin and Marie L. Campbell probe the operation of this new managerialism in the hospital setting and its effect on nurses and nursing practice. Written from a nursing perspective, this institutional ethnography documents a majortransformation in the nature of nursing and associated patient care and de monstrates how this work is now organized according to an 'accounting logic', in which a cost orientation is embedded into care-related activities. Rankin and Campbell illustrate how nurses adapt to -- and perpetuate -- this system and how they learn to recognize their adaptations as professionally correct and as an adequate basis for professional judgement and practice." - from the introductory preamble. Contents: 1. The Managerial Turn in Nursing; 2. 'Three in a Bed': Nurses and Technologies of Bed Utilization; 3. Doing the Right Thing at the Right Time: Adjusting the Mindset of Nurses; 4. Managing Resistance to Restructuring: The Ruling Work of Nurse Leaders; 5. Patient Satisfaction and the Management of Quality; 6. Language and the Reorganization of Nurses' Consciousness. RANKIN, Robert Allan. Down at the Shore : A History of Summerside, Prince Edward Island (1752-1945). With illustrations. N.pl. : Prince Edward Island Heritage Foundation, (1980). First Edition. "Printed by Williams and Crue Limited". Pp (8),3-193,(1). With over 90 b&w photos in the text as well as maps and other illustrations. 8vo, blue art-illustrated cardcovers, white lettering to spine.

Robert Allan Rankin (b. 1949, Summerside).

"Down at the Shore is a special kind of community history. Although Allan Rankin writes with the familiar warmth and affection of one talking about his own people, he attempts something much more ambitious : to explain how, in the context of a particular geographical location and world economic conditions, the town of Summerside came to be. More than that, and without falling into cant or dogma, he writes with a constant sense of sympathy for the working poor, who are so often overlooked in the usual historical litanies of the well-to-do.

This book lives with the dynamic energy of the many characters who fused their own vitality with that of the growing town. We meet, and get to know, Daniel Green, Loyalist settler; John Small, ship carpenter; J.C.Pope, ship merchant and politician; Joseph Read, sea captain; John MacKenzie, world champion tailor; Gertrude Arbuckle, schoolteacher; Robert T. Holman, Water Street merchant; Thomas Hall, farm equipment manufacturer; John L. MacKinnon, newspaper editor; Frank Tuplin, fox rancher; Corporal Prescott Forbes, soldier in the trenches of World War I. To this list of thrusting entrepreneurs and fine craftsmen can now be added that of an outstanding community historian"- rear cover.

Preface;

1. The Bedeque - Malpeque Isthmus: Micmac hunters and Acadian ploughmen; Loyalist refugees; Greens Shore; Around the Bay;

2. The Golden Shipyard: The timber trade; The Popes and the Walshes; Iron kneed and copper fastened; Ships without wood; (pp. 19-45)

3. Market Town: The first merchants; Intercolonial connections; Doing business; The merchant princes of Water Street; The mechanics;

Index. 8vo, brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "This absorbing study, the first on its subject to to be based on archival research in Leningrad, Moscow, Stockholm, and Copenhagen, examines personal and familial clienteles as the basic organizational units of Russian politics in theage of Catherine the Great. Focusing on the Panin party, David Ransel trac es the career of its leader, Nikita Panin, from his diplomatic service in Sweden during the 1740S and 1750s to his role as senior minister during the first twenty years of Catherine's rule. The book treats such varied issues as the impact of Western thought on political reform in Russia; the dynamics of Catherine's coup d'etat in 1762; the reforms of her early years, including the Great Legislative Commission; the relation of foreign policy decisions to the maneuverings of court cliques; and finally Panin's role as governor of the heir Paul and his use of this position as a political weapon. Professor Ransel also explores the role of the new "public opinion makers" to clientele groups vying for power. He concludes with an analysis of the contradiction between the Panin group's reform aspirations and its role as a familial clientele whose traditional patronage relations conflicted with its ostensible program for introducing greater legal system and rationality into Russian governance." Their idea was to give hera scrub before taking her back to the mainland to hand her over to her owner.The place, as Titty said, seemed 'beautifully uninhabited', but, while the bgoat was being scrubbed, Titty, Roger and Dorothea, exploring ashore, fou nd themselves being stalked like deer. Dick, the ship's Naturalist, made a discovery the credit for which somebody else wouldm have liked. Captain Flint, in spite of his wish to get home, had to take an extra two days' holiday and those two days were filledn with stirring happenings for every singlemember of his crew. Duke University Press, Durha, 1985, ISBN:0822306476
RAPOPORT, Vitaly, and Yuri ALEXEEV. High Treason : Essays on the History ofthe Red Army, 1918-1938. Vladimir G. Treml, Editor. Bruce Adams, Co-Editor and Translator. Durham : Duke University Press, 1985. First Edition. Pp (6 ),[vii]-xvii,(3),[3]-436,(2). Index. 8vo, red cloth, black lettering to spine. "This highly unusual and fascinating account of the purges in the Red Army is the product of a collaboration between two Soviet dissidents in the 1970s. In a sense the work is a samizdat: Rapoport is an engineer now residing in the West, but Alexeev, who remains in the USSR, is pseudonymous. High Treason is an impassioned account, from a patriotic Russian viewpoint, ofthe Civil War, the party struggles of the 1920s, the purges of the thirtie s and their tragic consequences for the Red Army in the beginnings of WorldWar II. The work is valuable for the fresh view it brings to matters only incompletely known in the West. It offers significant new treatment of the formative days of the Red Army, as well as new information and interpretations of such matters as Stalin's role in the Polish campaign, early purges of military academicians and theoreticians, and the various roles of Stalin's henchmen throughout the entire period. Expert opinion on the authenticityof some of the historical assertions will in many cases be reserved since it is not possible to consult the sources. There is no "freedom of information act" to cite. But the authors had access to many documents, oral history, hearsay, and other fragments of information that eluded the censors, andfrom these they have constructed this denunciation ot the damage done by S talin, and his all-too-eager cronies, to the Soviet Army and people." (fromthe dj). Contents : Author's Preface. Editor's Introduction. Prologue: On the Eve of Catastrophe. 1. Assembly on Nikolskaia. 2. Discord in the Face of Danger. Part I.
