Hutchinson , London, 1982, ISBN:0091497302
RENDELL, Ruth. The Fever Tree and Other Stories. London : Hutchinson, (1982). First Edition. Pp (8),[9]-191,(1). 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Ruth Rendell brings to tier short stories the same high professionalism that has established her as one of the world's outstanding crime novelists. How well the medium suits ner was clearly demonstrated in The Fallen Curtain and Means of Evil, and in this third collection she has scaled freshheights of imagination and ingenuity. The eleven short stories, one of the m a novella. range through a variety of themes and motives. Murder is committed for reasons of fear, jealousy, cupidity, and out of sheer compulsion. The settings include an African game park, a sinister ruined cemetery, an East Anglian seaside resort, and the gloomy purlieus of Epping Forest. We are reminded variously of the perils of profanity, of not leaving well alone, and most emphatically that hell still hath no fury like a woman scorned! A ll in all, The Fever Tree makes for enthralling reading, and an uneasy night's sleep." (from the dj). Very good in unclipped dustjacket. Signed with inscription by the author to title page. 40.00

"Ravens are not particularly predatory birds, but neither are they soft and submissive. The collective noun for them is an "unkindness"...The raven is a symbol used by a feminist group whose attitude to the opposite sex is anything but soft and submissive. RENDELL, Ruth. The Speaker of Mandarin. London : Hutchinson, (1983). First Edition. Pp (12),13-[224]. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Mysteries were Chief Inspector Wexford's business, but it seemed extraorainary even to him that he a country policeman, had walked upon the Great Wall, set foot on the stone boat in the Summer Palace, and had touched the scarlet columns in the Temple of Heaven. The Chinese government wanted advice on crime prevention and detection, and Scotland Yard's Chief Superintendent Howard Fortune had assembled a team that included the best detection experts. Reg Wexford was not a man to waste the opportunity of a lifetime, after the conference was over, he decided to take two weeks and see more of the country. Once back at work again, by a curious coincidence a murder victim turned out to be a woman Wexford remembered well from his tour through China. And before the case was solved, he would unearth more fatal clues from that mysterious journey." (from the dj). Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 30.00

RENDELL, Ruth. A Judgement in Stone. London : Hutchinson of London, (1977).First Edition. Pp (6),7-[181],(1). 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spi ne. "There was Indeed - much more. The Coverdales were nice people, cultivated and articulate, practising the arts of gracious living in the elegant Georgian setting of Lowield Hall, somewhere in Suffolk and not far from the formidably inbred village of Greeving. Yet in those very attributes lay the seeds of their own destruction. Had they been less concerned to treat theirnew, highly efficient, but curiously unforthcoming housekeeper fromLondon as a fellow human being with feelings similar to their own, they might conceivably have been spared. For behind the neatly conventional twentieth-century exterior of Eunice Parchman there lived a sione-age woman, a creature of primitive instinct whose judgements were as hard and insensate as graniteitself. Eunice did not like people. The one friend she made in Greeving wa s a former prostitute turned religious zealot, and even here the friendshipwould prove no more than one of deadly convenience; a catalytic relationsh ip that found fulfilment in a second St Valentine's Day Massacre." "For a while, the mysterious world ot spipionage was Mungo Cameron's whole existence. He and his group, using their own secret code, worked as London Central. They investigated planning applications, invitations to functions, things borrowed and not returned ... Sixteen years ago John Creevey's sister was murdered. The police never found out who was responsible. It was something Creevey never quite recovered from. And now Creevey's wife had left him for another man. Nothing could console him until he intercepted a message that was never meant for him ...He would never know that he was dealing with a group of public schoolboys at Rossingham who had set up a spy network with a rival school. For a moment, by the purest chance, he had discovered a way to get his wife back, and a way perhaps to harm the man who seduced her." (from the dj). Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 25.00

Jonathan Cape, London, 1995, ISBN:0224037137
RENDELL, Ruth (ed.). The Reason Why : An Anthology of the Murderous Mind. London : Jonathan Cape, (1995). First Printing. Pp (6),vii-x,1-189,(1). Index. 8vo, green cloth, black lettering to spine. "In The Reason Why Ruth Rendell has seielected the best ot writings which enter into the minds of murderers - into the talk, imagination, dreams, boastings and remorse of people who have killed, in fiction and in fact. The anthology ranges through diverse literary traditions, drawing upon poetrv, prose and drama. Motivation ishere in its many guises, including political and financial gain, jealousy and fear, and on the strange ana new territory where altruismand mercy are driving forces to murder. The book begins at the family hearth, among murderous parents and children, siblings, husbands; wives, lovers, and goes on to explore the minds of those who kill in revenge, and who must escape from various threats - even trom their own psyches. Remorse is here, as is the psychopath of literature and of true crime, and Ruth Rendell's selection closes with the taking of ancther's life for no acceptable reason whatsoever. Exploring our own darkest side, this anthology is a literary feast, including the finest work of Sophocles, Shakespeare, Poe, Capote, Mailer, Marquez,Nabokov, Highsmith, P.D. James, John Banvilie, James Fenton, alongside man y surprises, including a strange meditation on a husband's revenge by Rachel de Queiroz, a treatitise on t the murderous mind by Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein on the manic-depressive murderer, and Tolstoy's little-known tale of the convict Aksenof who retuses to punish the man responsible tor his incarceration." Fernwood Publishing, Halifax & Winnipeg, 2008, ISBN:9781552662595
RENNIE, Rick. The Dirt : Industrial Disease and Conflict at St Lawrence, Newfoundland. Halifax & Winnipeg : Fernwood Publishing, (2008). First Edition. Pp [1]-150,(10). Illustrated. Map. 8vo, illustrated brown card covers. "In the cemeteries of St. Lawrence and several neighbouring towns on the south coast of Newfoundland lie the remains of some 200 workers, killed by the dust and radiation that permeated the area’s fluorspar mines. The Dirt chronicles the many forces that created this disaster and shaped the response to it, including the classic ‘jobs or health’ dilemma, the contentious process of determining the nature and extent of industrial disease and the desire of employers to ‘externalize’ the costs of production onto workers and communities. Central to the account is the persistent effort by workers, women in the community and other activists to gain recognition of health hazards in the mines, their effects on workers and to obtain adequate compensation for victims and their families." - from the back cover. 46413 RENNO, David. East Sussex Shipwrecks of the 19th Century : Pevensey - Hastings - Rye. First Edition in dustjacket
Book Guild Ltd,, Sussex, 1976, ISBN:1857766474
RENNO, David. East Sussex Shipwrecks of the 19th Century (Pevensey - Hastings - Rye). Sussex : The Book Guild Ltd, (2002). First Edition. Pp (4),v-ix,(1),1-288,(6). 4 photos, two sketch maps and an illustration from a drawingin the text. 8vo, brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Perhaps 175 wrecks investigated and recorded. "During the mid-19th century the British Board of Trade estimated that some 150,000 tons of shipping were being lost annually off the coasts of the British Isles. Adverse weather conditions combined with poor navigation and the practice of 'beaching' ships to unload theircargoes took a horendous toll of vessels and live, and the coast of Sussex was no exception. East Sussex Shipwrecks is the first authoratative record of lost shiping off the Sussex coast between Pevensey and Rye during thr 1 9th century. Over 180 wrecks are described from the Innocenza Protetta, which sank in Rye Bay in 1800 to the Good Intent, which struck rocks near St. Leonerds in November 1899. Each entry has a detailed information panel listing all known relavant features of the vessel: date of sinking, date of striking or wrecking, dimensions, destination, cargo and many other useful details. Where wrecks were sufficiently reported in the local press, a commentary describing the circumstances of the wreck is provided to highlight the human interest of these disasters. As well as being an invaluable referencework which will be welcomed by marine archaeologists, amatuer divers and m aritime scholars, the commentaries in East Sussex Shipwrecks are a tribute to the heroism of the East Sussex Coastguards, lifeboatmen and fishermen who regualry risked, and often lost, their lives in their tireless efforts tosave the crews of vessels in distress." from the dj. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,(2),[3]-172. 8vo, black hardcover, red lettering to spine. "Since the Quiet revolution of the 1960s, the question of Quebec's status with Confederation has held centre stage in theCanadian Unity debate. Comparatively little has been written about British Columbia, a province that has long seen itself on the periphery of the Can adian federation. The Politics of Resentment is the first book to examine the role that British Columbia has played in the evolving Canadian unity debate. Philiip Resnick explores what makes British Columbia stand apart as a region of Canada. He looks at the views of politicians, opinion-makers, andordinary British Columbians on their sense of estrangement from central Ca nada, on the challenges posed by Quebec nationalism, and on what they see as the futurre of Canadian unity. He concludes with an examination of the likely BC response in the event of a 'yes' vote in any future Quebec referendum on sovereignty". With notes, bibliography and index. "On 19th December 1942 outward bound convoy ONS 154 pushed westwards past Bloody Foreland and into the gale-lashed North Atlantic. The 45 ships, some carrying women and children, were escorted by the valia nt but inadequate Canadian Escort Group C.I. A week later, outside the limits of the UK-based aircraft patrol zone, the convoy entered the notorious Black Pit area where Wolf-Packs Spitz and Umgestum groups, consisting of 19 U-boats, had gathered to attack. In the early hours of 27th December four ships were torpedoed for the loss of one U-boat. Several hours later the fuelling ship Scottish Heather was torpedoed. She Survived. But the following day the surfaced U-boats succeeded in penetrating the convoy, and a furthernine ships were lost before the gallant Canadian escort could, once again, temporarily drive the attackers off. The last victim, on 30th December, wa s HMS Fidelity, the Special Duties ship with an extraordinary career - an equally extraordinary crew. Her captain was the redoubtable Captain 'Langlais', a Frenchman who had refused to surrender his ship to the Vichy Government and had offered her, together with her crew, to the British. And the first Gunnery Officer was the 'Buccaneer in Black Bloomers', Wren MademoiselleMadeleine Barclay, whose story is one of the many told in this vivid and w ell documented account." - from the dj. With a foreword by Mark Hanna. Dust jacket adds: "One of America's most famous foreign correspondents, pacing the decks of a slow freighter bound for the War Zone, retells the highlight assignments of his exciting career." "Of all the war corresondents who have achieved fame as a result of the present conflagration, Quentin Reynolds stands justabout at the top. Incredibly daring, ingenious and facile, Reynolds has ma nged to be in the thick of things from the very outset. 'Convoy' was written while Reynolds was on his way to England just prior to his trip into Russia. He went over on a slow freighter, part of one of the largest convoys that ever cross the Atlantic Ocean. Impatiently pacing the decks of this slowfreighter as it plowed its way through heavy seas, Reynolds reviewed in hi s mind some of the most exciting assignments of his hectic newspaper career. Finally he decided to collect some of these stories into book form -- andhere they are -- salty stories ranging from the deep-sea fishing grounds i n Florida to the Arizona Desert, from the ball park of the Brooklyn Dodgersto the haunts of the rum runners in the fantastic days of Prohibition." - from the dustjacket. 1943 acquisition note inked inside front cover, light sunning to head of spine, else very good in lightly spine-sunned, edgeworn dustjacket. 25.00

Praeger, Westport, Ct / London , 2001, ISBN:0275970728
REZUN, Miron. Europe's Nightmare : The Struggle for Kosovo. Westport, Ct / London : Praeger, (2001). First Printing. Pp [i]-xviii,(2),[1]-202,(4),+ 14pp plates. Map. Index. Black cloth, silver lettering to spine. "Bombing ca mpaigns and peacekeeping efforts have achieved a fragile and uncertain peace in Kosovo. NATO will need help from both the European Union and the United Nations, however, to create and maintain a lasting peace in the region. An expert in the affairs of the troubled region, Rezun travelled to the crisis zone to interview Kosovar refugees and foreign statesmen. He offers a sharp critique of the conflict, taking NATO and the entire Western Alliance to task and emphasizing the villainous behaviour of the Milosevic regime. One cannot consider what happened in Kosovo to be an isolated affair, Rezun contends. Based on the widest possible range of sources, including documentation in nearly every European language, this study will appeal to experts and laymen alike. Rezun refuses to take sides. In addition to his criticismsof foreign intervention, exaggerated statistics, and reverse ethnic cleans ing, he is merciless in his condemnation of the Serbs, in particular the corrupt influence of Milosevic and the late Arkan. In a writing style laced with irony, wit, and satire, he reveals the foibles of limited war and the errors committed by all parties. Yet his primary focus remains the sufferingof the men, women, and who filled the refueee camps and the devastated vil lages to which they have returned." - from the dj.
