(8),ix-xviii,1-254. 8vo, illustrated grey and red card covers with white and black lettering to front cover, white lettering to red spine. "Every Newfoundlander and Labradorian knows that Joey Smallwood was 'the Father ofthe Baby Bonus'. He told us so in his own inimitable style -- many, many, many, many times. But is that really how Newfoundland's mothers got their cheques? Or is it another Imperfect Moment from our past -- one where the story is simply wrong or incomplete? Did Adolf Hitler ever fight the Royal Newfoundland Regiment during the First World War? Why did William Coaker, champoion of Newfoundland's fishermen, thrown an inkwell across the House of Assembly at Alfred B. Morine? Did Newfoundland really try to sell Labrador to Canada? Were the 1948 Referendum ballots counted honestly, or did we become Canadians because of a fraud? Was Rockwell Kent a German spy? What is the true story of the loss of the SS Diana, a Newfoundland sealing vessel? And what did Edward, Prince of Wales -- later the Duke of Windsor -- really think about St. John's? Edward Roberts, long and passionately interested in Newfoundland history, wrote fifty 'Past Imperfect' newspaper columns to answer these and other questions from the mists of our past." - from rear. (8),[ix]-x,(2),[3]-261,(9). 8vo, red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. A volume in the Cultural Spaces series. "When Canadian authors win prestigious literary prizes, from the Governor Gereral's Literary Award to the Man Booker Prize, they are celebrated not only for their achievements, but also for contributing to this country's cultural capital. Discussions about culture, national identity, and citizenship are particularly complicatedwhen honorees such as Michael Ondaatje, Carol Shields, or Rohinton Mistry, immigrated to Canada as adults, or in the case of Yann Martel, who is iden tified both as Canadian and as rootlessly cosmopolitan. How have these writers' identities been recalibrated in order to claim them as 'representative' Canadians? 'Prizing Literature' is the first extended study of contemporary award-winning Canadian literature and the ways in which we celebrate itsauthors. Gillian Roberts uses theories of hospitality to examine how prize -winning authors are variously received and honoured depending on their citizenship and the extent to which they represent 'Canadian-ness'. 'Prizing Literature' sheds light on popular and media understandings of what it meansto be part of a multicultural nation." - from the dustjacket. Contents; 1. Prizing Canadian Literature; 2. Albion's escape from prison with the help of old Samuel Ad ams is but the beginning of the adventures which carry him to Haiti in search of Lydia, and to France and Tripoli, where, with Lydia, he participates in events which, though both shameful and triumphant, taught the world thatthe United States was a world power at last." -from the dj. ROBERTS, Kenneth G. and Philip SHACKLETON. The Canoe : A History of the Craft from Panama to the Arctic. Toronto: Macmillan of Canada, (1983). First Edition. Pp. (6),vii-viii,1-279,(1). Map endpapers. Illustrated. Triple column. Large oblong 8vo, brown leather with gilt lettering and decoration to front and spine. Cassell 1662, Toy 4691, Morris & Howland p.115. "The canoe has a firm place in the mythology of our continent. Its history stretches back into the unrecorded past, its construction has conferred status on the builder and has fascinated the bystander for centuries, its forms are many and varied -- as are its uses, which range from the practical to the ceremonial and totemic. Above all, there is an indefinable romance about the canoe, a sense of its place in the lives of countless generations and its role in the history of our land. It is in this sense of romance that inspired the authors -- both avid canoeists -- to begin to record the history of the canoe in North America. During years of exhaustive research and travel on three continents they became convinced that their original plan was too limiting to do justice to the scope of the subject. As a result, 'The Canoe' presents a comprehensive survey of the craft not only in all parts of North America, but also in Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Here are (among others) the early rafts and floats of the Caribbean, the great ocean-going dugouts of the North Pacific, the kayaks and the skin boats of the Arctic, and, of course, the birch bark canoes of the woodland regions -- and with them, vivid pictures of the societies that brought them into being. Eachsection of the book is lavishly illustrated with native art, paintings and drawings by early European explorers and travellers, and early and contemp orary photographs, all of which underline the rich history of the canoe, the methods of its construction, its symbolic and religious importance, and its practical applications." - from the dustjacket. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1991, ISBN:0521400147 1991 0521400147
ROBERTS, Michael. From Oxenstierna to Charles XII : Four Studies. Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, (1991). First Printing. Pp. (8),ix,(1),1-203,(9). 8vo, mauve cloth with gilt lettered red title block to spine.

"The spectacular career of Gustav Adolf by no means established Sweden as a great power. In the four years after his death such a development became increasingly improbable. At Westphalia in 1648 the improbable became a fact; but the momentum of Swedish imperial expansion did not culminate until 1658, when Charles X imposed peace upon a prostrate Denmark.

The core of this volume of four essays, by the doyen of historians of Sweden, lies in the two studies of the man who bestrode the summit. One, an examination of Charles X's domestic policies and constitutional significance; the other, a discussion of the objectives of his foreign policy. Both are matters of controversy, and these studies attempt to assess the debate. Flanking these essays are, on the one hand, a study of Oxenstierna's magnificent failure in Germany between 1633 and 1636; and on the other, an examination of the great controversy surrounding the death of Charles XII: a controversy which became perhaps the most baffling - and certainly the most protracted - that modern historiography can show." - from the dustjacket.

1. Oxenstierna in Germany, 1633-1636;
2. Charles X and his Council : 'dualism' or co-operation?;
3. Charles X and the Great Parenthesis : a reconsideration;
4. The Dubious Hand: the history of a controversy.

Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, 1945,
ROBERTS, Richard, Rt.Rev., D.D., D.Litt. For God and Freedom. Sackville, New Brunswick : Mount Allison University, (1945). No printer given. Pp (10), 1-45, (1), portriat frontispiece. 12mo, maroon cloth. The Josiah Woods Lectures, 1944. Three Lectures : Liberty and Society; Freedom and Fraternity; Revolution and Religion. "The war now raging marks the end of an era. It is not only the state system of Europe that is tottering to its fall, but the habit of life which has been built up through many generations. The modes of thought, the scale of values, the conventions of behaviour, seem to be gathered together and condemned in one resounding and bloody judgment. We shall carry very little of the old world into the new, and it will be better so." - p.7. Not so long ago, an English periodical had a good deal to say about "the spiritual treasures of a great civilization." But it did not pauseto tell its readers what those treasures were. Not long after, Mr. Bernard Shaw told us that in England one person in five dies in a poorhouse, or in a public hospital, or in a madhouse. At the same time nine- tenths of the wealth of England went into the pockets of one-tenth of the population. In a South W ales colliery village or on the East Side of New York, you will hear next to nothing about the treasures of civilization. This kind of dithyrambic clatter is confined to the well- to-do. You will hear notmng of it in the slum or in the homes of working folk. The real test of a civilizationdoes rest not upon general "spiritual treasures." but upon the kind of men and women which it produces, and the kind of life it provides for them. Th e crime of modern civilization is, as John Ruskin said long ago, that it makes evervthing but men." - pp.8-9. Very good. 15.00
