Illustrated. 8vo, illustrated blue card covers, letered in blue and white. "Often described as talkative and forthright - a hard man to dislike - Louis R. Comeau has always, above all, been an advocate for the Acadaian community. Elected to the House of Commons in 1968, he was at the forefront of the shift that Bilingualism and Biculturalism brought to the status of French-language minorities in Canada in the 1970s. With the energy, foresight and skills to be an agent of change, he brought Unversité Sainte-Anne into the modern era, he transformed his grandfather's box factory, and he led Nova Scota Power from a public utility to a profitable enterprise. Yet, his biographical journey begins with the arrival of his ancestors in North America almost four hundred years ago." (from the back cover). Contents : 1. Acadian Roots Ten Generations Deep. 2. First Edition in dustjacket.

Latham, Sinclair Ross: An Annotated Bibliography A4, S padoni & Donnelly 2595. A novella by Sinclair Ross (b. January 22, 1908, near Shellbrook, near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan - d. February 29, 1996, Vancouver), distinguished Canadian author. "We begin at the end of a career. Doc Hunter is retiring and the townsfolk are gathered to say good-bye and tocelebrate the opening of the town's new hospital. It is here, in the steam ing atmosphere of the hospital patients' lounge, that the delusive triumphsand petty indiscretions of a lifetime meld together over drinks and best w ishes for the future. Upward, Saskatchewan, in 1948 is a typical town of the Canadian past (and present) -- difficult to leave, easy to disparage, nearly impossible to come back to. It is a town thriving on gossip, full of closely guarded secrets and precious dreams. In this major new novel, Sinclair Ross recreates the feelings and events of Upward and Doc Hunter with the thread of social dialogue and a stream of consciousness that runs swift anddeep over dreams and memories that cannot yield themselves up to public or even private utterance. And by the end, when the party is over, the reader leaves sharing Doc Hunter's clear, unsparing insight into these people, an insight tempered by compassion and leavened by humour, as the townsfolk st and revealed in all their aspects -- spiteful, splendid, petty, sordid, earthy, shrewd, generous... in short, extremely human." - from the dustjacket.Very good in nicked, unclipped dustjacket. 20.00

Ross (b. November 16, 191 2, Saint John, New Brunswick - d. November 1, 1995, Saint John, New Brunswick) was a Canadian actor, playwright and bestselling writer of more than 300 novels in a variety of genres. He was known for the speed of his writing and was by some estimates the most prolific Canadian author ever, though hedid not take up fiction until middle age. "Although the old-fashioned char m of Louisburg Square in Boston's Beacon Hill district allayed some of the fear felt by Bette Carelli, a stranger in a strange land, she soon found that the outward tranquility was misleading. Stertorous breathing and wheezing formed a harsh accompanimentent to a danse macabre which disturbed her dreams and in which red-hooded phantoms, book collectors and art lovers mingled in an incongruous array." ROSS, W. Gillies, (ed.). Arctic Whalers, Icy Seas : Narratives of the DavisStrait Whale Fishery. Toronto : Irwin Publishing, (1985). First Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xvi,(2),[3]-263. Double column. Illustrated. Oblong 4to, red cloth. Arctic Whalers, Icy Seas, is a presentation of dramatic first-hand narratives of Arctic Whaling Expeditions between 1824 and 1917. "Four three centuries before the First World War, whalemen from several countries battledArctic elements under terrible conditions in pursuit of Greenland whales. Here fifteen whalemen, mostly from Britsh ports, relate their own dramatic experiences in the Eastern Arctic between 1824 and 1917. Their tales take on epic proportions as they describe being hemmed in by pack ice and forced to winter over; tension between crew members; six months spent drifting hundreds of miles on an ice floe; outbreaks of scurvy, desertion and even cannibalism; attempts to establish settlements - and even play cricket - in thegrim Arctic environment. Whatever one feels about the commercial killing o f whales, it is impossible not to admire the skill, the fortitude and the courage of these men. Some of their narratives tell of fascinating early encounters with the Inuit, Eenoolooapik, who was taken to Scotland in 1839 andparaded before the aristocracy. W. Gillies Ross has skilfully edited these gripping first-hand accounts and written vivid, scene-setting introduction s for each chapter. is a first-class adventure story that will delight the general reader as well as anyone interested in whaling, maritime history, or Arctic exploration." - front dj flap. (Don Mills, Ont.): Longmans Canada Limited, (1968). Fi rst Paperback Printing. Pp. (6),1-145,(1). 8vo, illustrsated red card covers with black spine, black lettering to front cover, red lettering to spine."When W.W.E. Ross died in 1966, he left behind him a great mass of unpubli shed manuscripts, three privately printed booklets of verse, and a major reputation. His reputation as a leading Canadian poet rested solely on a handful of poems that appeared in all the standard anthologies of Canadian poetry. But to those who knew him or were familiar ith the extent of his unpublished writings, W.W.E. Ross was not only a leading Canadian poet but 'the first modern Canadian poet'. For the first time the poems of W.W.E. Ross have been brought together and offered to the public. 'Shapes and Sounds: Poems of W.W.E. Ross' lies halfway between a selection and a collection. Raymond Souster and John Robert Colombo have edited this important volume by selecting the major poems from 'Laconics, 'Sonnets', and 'Experiment: 1923-1929', all of which have long been out of print, and from magazines, anthologies, and Ross's unpublished manuscripts. One hundred and twenty-two poems arecollected for the first time, including definitive versions of all the ant hologized poems." - from the blurb inside the front cover. Very good. Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, illustrated brown card covers with yellow and light brown letteringto front and spine. "In 1909, fur buyer William Oliver Kennedy Ross travel led overland from his home in Quebec City along the North Shore of the St. Lawrence into southern Labrador and across the Strait of Belle Isle to the west coast of Newfoundland. His main purpose was to purchase furs from local trappers and middlemen. During his travels, he occasionally bought other items from local people including heirlooms that today would be considered antiques. This journal represents a day-by-day narrative of his activities over a period of nearly three months and a distance of some 1600 kilometres. He departs Quebec City in mid-March, and by early June, he is ice-bound in the Bay of Islands in western Newfoundland waiting impatiently to cross the Gulf to Labrador and return home. Ross recorded the incidents he observed and the many people he encountered, revealing the workings of the early century fur trade industry." - from the rear cover. Very good. 10.00

ROSSBERG, Ehrhard A. and Helmut E. KORTA. Teleprinter Switching. (Translated from the German by Johannes G. Thieme and Hans M. Seyringer). With 208 illustrations and 8 tables. Princeton, NJ:" D. Van Nostrand Company, Inc., (1960). First US Printing. Pp. (4),[5]-351,(1). Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, green cloth with white lettering to front board and spine. Originally published in German under the title "Fernschreib-Vermittlungstechnik". "this book presents a synopsis of the present-day state of telegraph switching. In the early stages of its development, this segment of communications was closely tied in with the related field of telephone exchange engineering, making extensive use of the latter's constructional parts and circuit elements and borrowing many of its operating principles, such as the selection schemes, from the parent art. Nevertheless, as time went on, the functional differences -- communication of written intelligence instead of oral conversation -- and entirely novel applications dictated substantial deviations from telephone circuitry and system configuration. All these needs compelled the designer of telegraph switching systems to seek new approaches and eventually brought into being a self-contained branch of communications of ever increasing importance." - from the preface. Contents: 1. Introduction;2. Teleprinter switching systems with provisions for direct subscriber-to- subscriber connections (circuit switching systems); 3. Teleprinter switching systems without provisions for direct subscriber-to-subscriber connections (message switching systems); 4. Telex rates and rate metering (customer billing); 5. Equipment and facilities for care and maintenance of teleprinter exchanges and for traffic analysis; 6. Guiding rules and viewpoints for planning and projecting teleprinter switching systems; 7. Index. 8vo, white card covers, lettered in black and white. Piccola Biblioteca Einaudi 89. (from the back cover). Contents : Prefazione di Leo Valiani. An account of the notorious 1968 solo non-stop around-the-world race, recounting the experiences of Donald Crowhurst, Robin Knox-Johnston, and Bernard Moitessier, among others. "During the late summer and fall of 1968, nine men, each in a small sailing vessel set out on what was to be a solo nonstop round-the-world sailboat race. One finished, one perished in circumstances both mysterious and dramatic.Hal Roth, himself a deep-water sailor and the author of books about his ow n voyages, has gathered together the whole story of the nine and their adventures. In a masterful display of narrative skill, he involves the reader in each story. We experience the agony of Donald Crowhurst. who was emotionally and physically unprepared for the voyage and who, in desperation, made a decision that destroyed him. We are with Robin Knox-.Iohnstnn holding together a slowly disintegrating boat, fighting through storms and calms, ableto live alone for months, and finallv staggering back into Plymouth, the w inner and only finisher. We live with the nearly mysterious Bernard Moitessier, a superb sailor who, when nearly three-quarters around the world, suddenly turned around and returned to French Polynesia, where he lived for eleven years. They are all here. It is a thrilling account of what has become one of the classic true adventures of our time. " from the dj. This is his storyof one man against the sea. It is an intensely personal account of failure and triumph in his strugle against gales, flat calms, mountainous seas, ge ar failure, injury and illness, and always the drive to go fast, to win while realizing that dead sailors do not finish. It was a test of self againstgreat natural forces. By radio the competitors shared their experiences an d feelings, and there grew an intimate, mutual-support comradeship against shared dangers. One died mysteriously in the Southern Ocean (his yacht was found undamaged). Eight others were forced out. Their stories are told herethrough the story of one -- a celebrated writer who was one of them. It is an intense reading experience reminiscent of Francis Chichester's 'Gypsy M oth'." - from the dj. "David Kepesh is white-haired and over sixty, an eminent TV culture critic and star lecturer at a New York college, when he meets Consuela Castillo, a decorous, well-mannered student of twenty-four, the daughter of wealthy Cuban exiles, who promptly puts his life into erotic disorder. Since the sexual revoltuion of the 1960s, when he left hiswife and child, Kepesh has experimented with living what he calls an 'eman cipated manhood', beyond the reach of family or a mate. Over the years he has refined that exuberant decade of protest and license into an orderly life in which he is both unimpeded in the world of eros and studiously devotedto his aesthetic pursuits. But the youth and beauty of Consuela, 'a master piece of volupte', undo him completely, and a maddening sexual possessiveness transports him to the depths of deforming jealousy. The careree erotic adventure evolves, over eight years, into a story of grim loss." - from the dustjacket. Very good in price-clipped dustjacket. 25.00

"Everything is over for Simon Axler, the protagon ist of Philip Roth's startling new book. One of the leading American stage actors of his generation, now in his sities, he has lost his magic, his talent, and his assurance. His Falstaff and Peer Gynt and Vanya, all his greatroles, 'are melted into air, into thin air'. When he goes onstage he feels like a lunatic and looks like an idiot. His confidence in his powers has d rained away; he imagines people laughing at him; he can no longer pretend to be someone else. 'Something fundamental has vanished'. His wife has gone, his audience has left him, his agent can't persuade him to make a comeback . Into this shattering acount of inexplicable and terrifying self-evacuation bursts a counterplot of unusual erotic desire, a consolation for a berefet life so risky and aberrant that it points not toward comfort and gratification but to a yet darker and more shocking end." - from the dustjacket. American Edition. Pp (13),12-19 0. Illustrated. Index. 4to, green cloth, yellow lettering to spine. "The Rothschild family, renowned as bankers, have had a huge impact on Western social and political history over nearly two centuries. Less well-known is their influence on the landscape, for many members of the family have been passionate and knowledgeable gardeners, skillfully creating magnificent parklands and gardens throughout England, Europe, and elsewhere. [...] Enthusiastic and flamboyant, the Rothschilds have always been fond of showy bedding displays and elaborate topiary, but they have also enjoyed producing fruit and vegetables. Baron Edmond delighted guests at his households in Paris andBoulogne by inviting them to pick fresh fruit - ripe red or black cherries , or greengage plums - straight from dwarf trees brought into the dining room! More than just a book about beautiful gardens and estates, this is a combination of glorious photographs, extraordinary anecdotes, vast fortunes, and magnificent gardens. Archival pictures of many of the gardens and the characters involved accompany Miriam Rothschild's intimate, amusing look at the competitiveness and drive for perfection that has typified her family'sbehavior in gardening, as well as in business." Illustrated. 8vo, illustrated blue and black glossy paper covered boards, white lettering to front and spine. "Human activity is undeniably affecting the rates of change of many parts of the global system. How this global change devlops into the future is vitally important, but modelling these changes requires a complex, integrated assessment of a wide range of disciplines in science and social science. This book describes the structure, assumptions, philosophy, and results of an advanced global integrated assessment model: TARGETS (Tool to Assess Regional and Global Environmental and health Targetsfor Sustainability). For a selective number of future directions, determin ed by different perspectives on how the world system functions and is managed, the model charts global implications in terms of population and health, enery, land and water-use and biogeochemical cycles. By indicating to what extent these directions involve certain levels of risks, a circumspect app raisal is made as to whether the chosen future direction is sustainable or unsustainable." -from the rear cover.
