SELVADURAI, Shyam. Cinnamon Gardens : A novel. (Toronto): McClelland and Stewart, (1998). First Printing. Pp. (10),3-389,(3). 8vo, purple cloth with silver titles to spine. "Lush and beautiful, this story of intertwined livesvividly evokes the gracious world of 1920s' Ceylon (Sri Lanka) among the u pper classes of Colombo's wealthy suburb, Cinnamon Gardens, during a periodwhen the power of colonial rule is shifting. During the course of one year , Annalukshmi, a young schoolteacher, finds herself caught between her family's pressures to marry and her own desire for a more independent life; a life she sees reflected in her mentor, Miss Lawton, a progressive headmistress -- a life, she discovers, that is fraught with complexities and danger and with rules that cannot be broken. Then there is Balendran, the obedient son of a domineering patriarch, a feudal aristocrat and landowner. Balendran -- whose story is brilliantly counterpointed with that of his niece Annalukshmi -- leads a comfortable existence with his wife, Sonia, until he learns that Richard Howland is to arrive in Colombo for the Donoughmore Commission hearings. This uneasy reunion with a lover from the past throws Balendran into turmoil and re-ignites tensions with his father as it threatens everything on which Balendran has built his present life. As the narrative unfolds and deepens, we meet a varied cast of characters, including: Louisa, Annalukshmi's mother, who, in the face of a failed marraige, struggles to raise her daughters alone; Vijith Jayaweera, a poor clerk with connections inthe Labour Union; Arul, Balendran's exiled brother; and the delightfully h igh-strung and meddlesome Philomena Barnett." - from the dustjacket. Arjie Chelvaratnam is a Tamil boy growing up in an extended family in Colombo. It is through his eyes that the story unfolds and we meet a delightful, so metimes eccentric cast of characters. Arjie's journey from the luminous simplicity of childhood days into the more intricately shaded worlds of adults-- with its secrets, its injustices, and its capacity for violence -- is a memorable one, as time and time again the true longings of the human heart are held against the way things are." - from the rear cover. Anderson analyzes the results of surgeon-turned-author Richard Selzer's need for a creative release. Selzer's writing offered him the emotional outlet for the frustration and pain that he had to suppress as a surgeon. His written works offer us the opportunity to experience the development of one surgeon's capacity to love, to heal, to be healed, and to recognize compassion, the central element in a fully successful medical event.Historical prsence, artistic perception, and factual contraint converge in Selzer's writing to produce a representation of surgical science presented in completely human terms. The morning passed calmly enough; the ship in her quiet Sabbath trim; and nothing giving token of what was about to follow, save here and there a group anxiously scanning the horizon, or eagerly discussing the chances of a rich capture before nightfall. The forenoon wore slowly away, and five bells had just sounded when the cry of 'Sail, ho!" from the masthead put everyone on the qui vive, the excitement growing rapidly more and more intense as bit by bit the description of the stranger became more accurate and minute. She is a steamer -- and a large one! That sounded well, and the hopes of the sanguine rose higher and higher. Brigantine rigged -- and a side-wheel steamer! -- so far so good." - from pp. 1-2. A translation of Quel beau dimanche ! by Jorge Semprún Maura ( b.December 10, 1923, Madrid – d. June 7, 2011 in Paris) a Spanish writer in France. "Winter 1944. Sunday in Buchenwald. Prisoner 44904 stands admiring a towering beech and becomes momentarily lost in dreams and literary reminiscences. Here Goethe had walked ... But an SS officer suddenly brings 44904back to reality. Jorge Semprun, a Spaniard, fought the Nazis, was captured and sent to a concentration camp. In the 1950s he played a major role in t he anti-Franco struggle as a Communist Party organizer, only to be expelledin 1964 for daring to protest against the grotesque results of its ideolog ical distortions. He then turned his energies to literature and films. In What a Beautiful Sunday! Semprun brings all these identities together. It isBuchenwld reconsidered in the light of the Gulag, Marxism reconsidered in the light of fascism. It is one winter Sunday in Buchenwald in 1944, in which the white stillness is interrupted only by the column of smoke rising from the camp crematorium. That Sunday triggers memories of many a Sunday before, and as many after. Memory feeds on memory: of the Spanish Civil War, which had broken over Semprun's childhood and saved him from the crises of adolescence, of the sultry summer Sunday in the 1950's, when full of urgencyand purpose he drove from Paris to Geneva for a clandestine Communist meet ing. The revelation of Stalin's crimes and the publication of Solzhenitsyn's Gulag bring on the crisis of manhood and save him from himself. It is a long and painful withdrawal, for Communism had been the hope and inspirationof Semprun's youth. What a Beautiful Sunday! is the crystallization of the twentieth-century eXperience, a testament to violent and cunning times, an enduring work of literature." (from the dj). Whatever greatness these books possess is not accidental -- a freak of inspiration -- but the result of long years of thought and practice devoted to the illustrator's art. "This amazingly clear and non-technical book actually enables the reader to understand the basic principles behind the development of atomic energy — without any previous scientific or mathematical training. Stripped of unnecessary scientific terminology, and with more than 100 graphic illustrations, Atomics for the Millions gives a comprehensive picture of atomic energy and its future potentalities

The story behind our entrance into 'Atomic Age" is as replete with clues, false leads, clever detective work as any popular "whodunit." Atomics for the Millions traces this development from its first beginnings in Greek theory, through the fact of fission, to a preview of the coming applications of radio- active materials to medicine, and the second industrial revolution. Special emphasis is placed on the highly intensified pace of the war years, and the tremendous achievement of that relatively small group of scientists who worked against time to end the war. The authors preview of the future goes far beyond anything that has thus far been presented along the lines of interplanetary travel, tagged atoms in medicine, hope for cancer, home and industrial power. The authors show concretely how scientific development is the work of the minds and labor of many men, and of how this one phase of science, atomic energy, has been built to its present state.

If we are to properly understand this atomic age in which we live, we must and should have some conception not merely of the specific events which led up to the discovery of atomic energy, but a general understanding of atomic energy itself. Through Atomics for the Millions, the reader will be in an excellent position to comprehend and interpret the striking developments that are appearing and will appear in this "Atomic Age." - from the jacket.

(4),v-x,1-314. 8vo, green cloth with gilt titles to spine. A volume in the Studies in Irish History, Second Series, number 4. Edited by T.W. Moody, J.C. Beckett, [and] T.D. Williams. "The Orange Lodges, originally a powerful agency for the defence of loyalist and protestant interests in Ireland, have flourished as fraternal societies in the British Army in nearly every part of the English-speaking world. Although founded by Irish protestant peasants, they soon attracted sections of the upper and middle classes who, at times, found Orangemen useful politically, but embarassing and difficult to control. This study deals with the founding of the movement in County Armagh just prior to the rebellion of 1798, and traces its history through the first forty years of its existence. In the course of these years, Orangemen sought to protect the protestant control of the Irish administrationand fought, in association with the British Ultra-Tories and the Duke of C umberland, a stubborn rear-guard action against Catholic emancipation. After the Reform Bill of 1832, efforts to make the Orangemen the centre for a rejuvenated conservatism led to charges of conspiracy, and the dissolution of the movement in 1836." - from the dj. Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, green cloth with gilt series device to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Volume 15 in The English Landscape Garden series: Examples of the important literature of the English landscape garden movement together with some earlier garden books. Edited with introductory notes by John Dixon Hunt. "John Serle was gardener to the poet Alexander Pope, whose garden and grotto at Twickenham were famous even before his death in 1744 (this was largely due to Pope';s own invocation and mythologizing of his country retreat in poetry of the 1730s). Serle is largely concerned with the grotto under Pope's house, ofwhich there is a plan and a detailed description of the geological and min eral speciments embedded in its walls; this grotto -- essentially a classical feature, alerting us to the strong traditional aspects of English Augustan gardening -- was considered an intregral feature of his garden by Pope, though it puzzles those who want to see hima s a central figure in the English landscape movement." - from the preface. Contents: John Serle's "A Planof Mr. Pope's Garden", "A Description of the Royal Gardens at Richmond", " A Description of the Gardens and Buildings at Kew", "A Short Account of thePrincipal Seats and Gardens in and about Richmond and Kew", and "The Conte st; Being Poetical Essays on the Queen's Grotto". 50393 SETH, Vikram From Heaven Lake : Travels through Sinkiang and Tibet. First British Edition in dustjacket
Chatto & Windus / The Hogarth Prerss, London, 1983, ISBN:0701127007
SETH, Vikram. From Heaven Lake : Travels through Sinkiang and Tibet. London: Chatto & Windus / The Hogarth Prerss, (1983). First British Edition. Pp (12),1-178,(2),+ 8 pp plates. 8vo, orange cloth, gilt lettering to spine. This is his second book, only preceeded by Mappings (1980, 1981), a book of poetry. " In the summer of 1981, Vikram Seth - an Indian postgraduate student at Nanjing University - decided to attempt the improbable and hitchhike home to Delhi by way of Tibet. He proved to be an observant and irrepressibly resourceful traveller; and his account of his battles with bureaucracy, climatic extremes and the amiable but agonising discomfort of the long-distance lorries that took him from the arid wastes of China's far west to the Potala Palace in Lhasa has the descriptive vividness, the anecdotal wealth, and the combination of narrative excitement and personal reflection that c haracterise travel writing at its best. Vikram Seth knew almost nothing about Tibet before deciding to try to get there, and so approached a part of the world that remains exceptionally remote and inaccessible with an engagingly fresh eye; out his ability to speak Chinese enabled him to persuade those whom he met on his travels - nomadic Muslims from Sinkiang, Tibetans still ambivalent towards rule from Peking, the supposedly uncommunicative Chinese themselves - to talk about themselves with remarkable candour: while his refusal to take no for an answer not only enabled him to get where he wanted to go, but to swim in the icy waters of Heaven Lake, and to witness theunusual rituals whereby the Tibetans dispose of their dead. He proves to b e a wonderfully stimulating and evocative companion; and From Heaven Lake is a travel book to put alongside those?of Bruce Chatwin and Paul Theroux." - from the dj. Contents : 1.
