57409 VIDAL, Gore At Home : Essays 1982-1988. First Edition in dustjacket
Random House, New York, 1988,
VIDAL, Gore. At Home : Essays 1982-1988. New York : Random House, (1988). First Printing. 'Here is Vidal the essayist at the height of his powers- -iconoclastic, witty, sarcastic, engaging, as he tilts at shibboleths of radicals and conservatives alike. Included in this gathering of 24 essays from the past 6 years are controversial pieces that have created a ruckus, such as his plea that the U.S. should make common cause with the Soviet Union against the Sino-Japanese axis, and his critique of the American pro- Israel lobby. Vidal portrays Ronald Reagan as a very sincere sort of liar, and is equally withering on Nixon and Oliver North. In literary essays, he strikes gold in discussing Henry James as book reviewer, William Dean Howells' avant-garde realism, Anthony Burgess's embrace of God and sex, Paul Bowles's underrated short stories and expatriate Quaker writer Logan Pearsall Smith, among others. In more personal pieces, he reminisces on the early history ofaviation and gets culture shock in Mongolia. Reading Vidal is always an in vigorating experience.'- Publishers Weekly, 1988. Pp (12),11-314,(4). 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine, blindstamped Dutton logo to bottom corner of front board. "With this third novel, Gore Vidal omes into his own as an author of first-rateimportance, a mature writer of major scope, His qualities as a stylist, th e unique, subtle directness of his narrative prose, have already won him animportant following among younger writers, and a brilliant critical record . Into The City and the Pillar he brings new qualities; the dispassionate conviction, the breadth, the crusading spirit that make this study of male homosexuality something that is indeed both a vital social tract and a masterful story of personal tragedy. The development of his characters, his subtle analysis of them through their words and actions, take the place of doctrine in all of Gore Vidal's work. He guides tnem with a sureness of detail and an understanding of the most complex relationships. But the importance of this novel is more in its sustained dramatic qualities and the effectivebackground panorama, vvitn his restrained style and his combination of per sonal detachment with supernormal penetration, his writing shows the steadyprogress of a young American talent. The City and the Pillar is a notable book of high literary quality - a part, really, of the great study of the needs and limits of human affections that concerns many of today's serious writers." 57415 VIDAL, Gore LINCOLN, Abraham Lincoln.: A Novel.. First Edition in dustjacket
Random House, New York, 1984, ISBN:0394528956
VIDAL, Gore. Lincoln : A Novel. New York : Random House, (1984). First Trade Edition. Pp (10),[3]-657,(7). 8vo, brown cloth, gilt titles and red mettalic lines to front board and spine. "At dawn on a cold winter morning in 1861 Abraham Lincoln, President-elect of a disintegrating United States, alights from his train in Washingon, D.C., flanked by two bodyguards in plain clothes,. The future President is himself in disguise, for there is talk of a plot to murder him before his inauguration a few weeks hence. During the next four years there will be numerous plots to murder this man who has sworn to unite the nation that has split apart over slavery. From within his circle there will also be a profusion of schemes to succeed him as President. Meanwhile, Lee's armies are beating at the gates of the beleagured capital as Lincoln seeks a Union general equal to the dreadful conflict.Isolated in the ramshackle White House in the center of a pro-slavery city, Lincoln presides over a government that is itself fragmented. Even Lincoln's fellowRepublicans treat him with contempt, call him "Honest Ape," accuse him of weakness and vacillation, then of high-handedness and dictatorship. In thisprofoundly moving historical novel, a work of epic proportion and intense human sympathy - the triumphant cornerstone of Gore Vidal's American chronicle, which includes Burr, 1876, and Washington, D.C. - Lincoln is observed by his loved ones, his rivals, his future assassins. The result is a portrait of America's great President that is at once intimate and monumental, stark and complex, and that will become for this and future generations the living Lincoln of the war years.Vidal's Lincoln emerges as he is seen by hiswife, Mary, who adores him even as she is going mad; by the Machivellian S ecretary of State, Seward, who begins by scorning Lincoln and ends by worshipping him; by Lincoln's rival, Salmon P. Chase, and his beautiful daughter, Kate; by David Herold, the druggist's clerk at the center of the plot that will eventually take Lincoln's life; and by the twenty-three-year-old presidential secretary, John Hay, who comes to know Lincoln intimately during his four years in the White House and who realizes, as will the reader, that had there been no Lincoln, there would be no nation.Lincoln is a brilliantly realized, vividly imagined work of fiction in which most of the events and much of the dialogue are actual. The reader becomes, from the first pages, part of the tragic but also intimate action within the White House and the capital city intself. He sees the wartime leader as a living presence in the corridors of the White House - at night, "in a shirt bunched up in back like an ostrich," in despair over the vagaries of his generals and the approaching madness of his beloved wife, wracked by the death of his son, Willie, and in the somber moment of his triumph. Vidal's great achievement inthis novel is to render the tragic President in all his grandeur and yet i ntimately, so that the reader comes to know the legendary Lincoln as a fellow human being. Lincoln is the brilliant climax not only of Vidal's ongoingchronicle of the American past but also of his own extraordinary literary career." (from the dj). Pp (10),[ix]-xlii,[1]-648, frontispiece + 2 folding plates. Index. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "The author has in this work clearly marked the principal stages of Indian logic in the vast period of about two thousand years beginning from 640 B.C. and has traced how from Anviksiki - the science of debate, Indian logic developed into the science of knowledge - Pramanasastra and then into the science of dialectics - Prakarana of Tarkasastra. The treatment of the subject is both historical and critical. The author has traced some Greek influence on Indian logic. For instance he has shown how the five-membered syllogism of Aristotle found its way through Alexandria, Syria and other countries into Taxila and got amalgamated with Nyaya doctrine of inference. The book is one of thepioneer works on the subject. It has drawn on original sources exhaustivel y. VIGOR, P. H. tHE Soviet View of War, Peace and Neutrality. London and Boston : Routledge & Kegan Paul, (1975). First Edition. Pp (4),[v]-vi,(2),[1]-256. Index. 8vo, maroon cloth, silver lettering to spine. "“War, peace and neutrality are three tools which the Russians use for attaining their political objectives. In this study P.H. Vigor shows how they have evolved a clear-cut view, based on Marxism-Leninism, of the origins of war, the categoriesof war, the ways in which it can be made to serve the Marxist revolutionar y interest, and the circumstances in which it is profitable to use it. Whatare the factors making for victory in war? Even if you win a military vict ory, under what circumstances can you hope that it will secure for you the goals for which you fought? To what extent is strategy the tool of policy? These are some of the questions the book sets out to answer. As for peace, both Lenin and Khrushchev described it as a ‘temporary, unstable armistice between two wars'. In the Leninist view, peace is a too! for attaining political objectives just like war, while neutrality is essentially ridiculous:‘he who is not with me is against me’. Nevertheless, there are occasions w hen neturality is a concept acceptable to the Soviet leaders, and this study examines some instances of this." (from the dj). Contents : 1. Whose View? 2. The Soviet View of War : - An introductory summary of the Soviet attitude to war; - The relative expertise of Marx and Engels in matters concerning war; - Lenin's expertise in the matter of war; - The origin of war; - The value of war as a tool of revolution; - Marx's, Engels* and Lenin's viewson the evils of war; - Lenin's doctrine of the inevitability of war betwee n capitalism and communism, and its so-called 'refutation'; - The differentkinds of war in Marxist reckoning and the attitude of communists towards t hem; - The communist attitude to aggression and self-defence, and to 'offensive* and 'defensive' wars; - War is the continuation of policy by other means; - War is the tool of policy; - Strategy is the tool of policy; - The factors that make for victory in war; - The suppression of the vanquished; -The Soviet view of violence, and hence of the use for war; - The changes w rought in the theory by nuclear weapons; Conclusions; - A summary of the Soviet attitude to war as it stands today. 3. "With the publication of 'Graves without Crosses', an enthralling and internationally-acclaimed novel is made available to the English speaking world. First published in Estonian, it has been translated into six other languages, and has won two literary awards. When Estonia was invaded, first by the Russians and then by the Germans, during World War II, Taavi Raudoja fled to join the Estonian regiment in Finland. In 1944, however, he returned, along with many of his compatriots, to defend his homeland against the Soviet counter-offensive. Resistance was useless; the takeover was complete, and the young men who survived were either forced to flee or to take refuge in the woods. Taavi andhis wife, with their little son, attempt to escape to the West, but the venture ends disastrously. Eventually, after much misery, the couple join the freedom fighters in the forest near their village. From there they witness the horrors of the occupation: the theft of crops and livestock, the arrest of their friends and neighbours, the demoralization of the population. Day by day the hopelessness of the situation becomes clearer, until finally a harrowing decision must be made." - from the dustjacket. Very good inlightly edgeworn, unclipped dustjacket. Latvian dainas often feature pre-Christianthemes and legends, drone vocal styles and Baltic zithers (kokle). Dainas are very short, usually only one or two unrhymed stanzas, unrhymed and in afour-footed trochaic metre. Lyrically, dainas concern themselves with nati ve mythology but, in contrast to most similar forms, does not have any legendary heroes. Stories often revolve around pre-Christian deities like the sun goddess Saule, the moon god Meness and, most notably, the life of people, especially its three most important events - birth, wedding and death (including burial).” from Wikipedia. Oxford University Press, London, 1965,
VILE, M.J.C. The Structure of American Federalism. (London): Oxford University Press, (1965). Second Impression. Pp. (6),[vii]-viii,(2),[1]-206. 8vo, navy blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "This study presents a re-examination of the working of the American federal system, and the implications of this for our understanding of the nature of federalism itself. Federalism in the United States is not merely one aspect of the governmental system of that country, but is the expression of an attitude towards government which pervades the whole structure. We must look at the federalism of the United States as a single integrated system of government, one in which the constitutional structure, and legislative, administrative and judicial activities, combine with the operation of the party system, and of pressure groups, to provide a single highly complex organization within which, it is contended, Federal and State governments are linked together in a mutually interdependent political relationship. An attempt is made here to present an integrated picture of American federalism in these terms, and to formulate a re-definition of the nature of federalism, which embraces the political, as well as the legal, aspects of thsi form of government." - from the dustjacket. It is a chronicle which embraces the famous and the eccentric upon both sides of the Atlantic - Alexander Graham Bell, Lawrence of Arabia, Gabriel d' Annunzio, Lionel de Rothschild, Betty Carstairs and the 'professionals' Gar Wood, Kaye Don and the Campbells.

Beginning with the steamboats of the 1870s, and the Harmsworth trophy in 1902, the story traces each stage of the development , from the first petrol launches of the 1890s to the takeover of jet from propeller propulsion in the 1950s. It follows the successes of the Napier, Dixie, Maple Leaf and Miss Detroit series , and of Garfield Wood with his Miss America, challenged by the Miss Englands of Sir Henry Segrave and Kaye Don. The next chapters follow the development of Bluebird and the world records of Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald from 1937 to 1967. The final chapter recounts Lee Taylor's career with the Hustler and ends with a prophetic look towards the future.

"The World Water Speed Record is not only a chronicle of speedboat development , it is also a profound look at an aspect of human nature; it reflects the motivations of the speed kings, and the sponsors, the designers and technicians and their fight against the elements and formidable obtacles that so often ended in tragedy." - from the dj.

VILLARI, Rosario. The Revolt of Naples. (Cambridge): Polity Press, (1993). Pp. (2),[i]-[xii],[1]-280. 8vo, black cloth cover with silver lettering to spine. "This classic work of early modern European history examines one of the major events in the years of 'revolution' in Europe in the 1640s: the revolt by the people of the Kingdom of Naples against the Spanish monarchy which ruled over them. Villari analyses the preconditions of the revolt, going back to its roots in the late 16th Century and discussing economic, social and political developments in the Kingdom. Villari retraces the course of these events, from the birth and growth of the reform movement to the crises in society and the State caused by the Kingdom's enormous contribution of financial and human resources towards Spanish particiaption in the Thirty Years War. He discusses the repercussions of the revolt beyond the frontiers of Naples, and assesses the ideas and sentiments which it aroused throughout Europe." -from the dj. Curator René Villeneuve opens this volume by exploring the formation of the Birks Collection in light of the history of silver in Canada and the collector's goals and achievements. He then undertakes the first major stylistic analysis of Quebec silver, going far beyond the compilation of new data to approach the subject from a fresh and intriguing perspective. Virginia B. "Sailing Eagle is devoted to one of the great maritime services of the modern world - the United States Coast Guard., this county's oldest armed service. Its officers still recieve their initial seafaring training in the classic manner, under sail, in the beautiful sailing barque Eagle, namesake of the earlier Coast Guard Eagles who performed valiantly under the American flag. "In May of 1954, Alan Villiers repaired aboard the Eagle and made the training cruise with the cadet officers to Santander, Spain; from there to Amsterdam; next Copenhagen. Then came the long grey road home, the road the Vikings knew so well - Iceland, Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland, the coasts of Maine. "The text of thisbook, briefer than Villiers' earlier books, is an interesting, essentially factual account, historical and descriptive, of the Coast Guard and its tr aining of men.
