60501 WODEHOUSE, P.G. GALDONE, Paul Joy in the Morning. Second American Printing in dustjacket
Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, N.Y., 1946,
WODEHOUSE, P.G. Joy in the Morning. Illustrations by Paul Galdone. Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1946. Second American Printing . Pp (6),[1]-281,(1). Illustrated. 8vo, reddish-brown cloth, green lettering and drawings to spine. McIlvaine A65a2. "Bertram, last of the Woosters, travelled down from London to "Wee Nooke" at the command of his peevish uncle Percy and, incidentally, to allow the inscrutable Jeeves the pleasure of angling in the nearby trout stream. The events that followed his arrival can onlybe described as the Steeple Bumpleigh Horror. Steeple Bumpleigh was a quie t English hamlet until Bertie and Jeeves burst upon the scene and became immediately involved in a broken wedding engagement, the theft of a policeman's uniform, a fancy dress ball, international finance, and general confusion. It was unfortunate, to say the least, that Florence Craye decided she would rather marry Bertie than her crew-man fiance, G. D'Arcy (Stilton) Cheesewright, who, besides being a jilted lover, was a member of the local constabulary. It was also said that Uncle Percy took such a dislike to Boko Fittleworth, one of Bertie's friends, and would not allow his engagement to "Nobby" Hopwood, his ward. Many other exasperating compli cations faced Bertie, and even Jeeves showed signs of weakening before he rallied for the tremendous climactic feats of diplomacy which brought Bertie's country visit to an end." (from the dj). Very good in poor, torn and tape-repaired, price-clipped dustjacket. As is. 30.00

Pp (8),ix-xii,(2),3-163,(1). 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. McIlvaine A101a. "Never before published in the United States, these outrageous talcs by the greatest humorist of the twentieth century are sure to delight not only countless devotees of P.G. Wodehouse but all those who enjoythe retresning feeling that comes from reading truly enjoyable fiction. "T he Eighteen-carat Kid" is a fast-paced novella. It tells the story of Ogden, the devil-may-care son of wealthy, American divorced parents who is pursued by kidnappers. The chase through the tranquil British public school setting holds the reader's attention with a brilliant mix of comic action and suspense. Equally enteruiining are tne other stories contained in this volume, all newly discovered and each fresh and funny. One of them, "William Tell Told Again," is the only story ever written for children by "the Master" —at once great fun to react and a genuine collector's item as well." (from the dj). 60503 WODEHOUSE, P.G. McPHAIL, Rodger Sir Agravaine. First Thus in dustjacket
Blandford Press, Poole, Dorset, 1984, ISBN:0713715103
WODEHOUSE, P.G. Sir Agravaine. Illustrated by Rodger McPhail. Poole, Dorset: Blandford Press, ((1984). First Thus. Pp (48). Illustrated in colour. Ob long 8vo, maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. First published by Methuen& Co. in 1914 as part of the volume The Man Upstairs. "Stories of King Art hur's Round Table usually sugeest that all the knights associated with thatfamous piece of furniture were strong, manJy and handsome. Not, according to P.G. Wodehouse, Sir Agravaine: "His muscles, though he had taken three correspondence courses in pnysical culture, remained distressingly flaccid. His eyes were pale and mild, his nose snub, and his chin receded sharply from his lower lip, as if Nature, designing him, had had to leave off in a hurry and finish the job anyhow. The upper teeth, protruding, completed the resemblance to a nervous rabbit." How this sad and lonely misfit found both fame and love is the subject of one of P.G. Wodehouse's best stories. A delightful tale, it abounds in the descriptive skill and stylistic fireworks which are Wodehouse hallmarks. This edition has been illustrated by Rodger McPhail, whose brilliant work has earned him a leading place among the younger generation of artists and illustrators. No-one who appreciates fine humorous writing or illustrating will be able to resist such a feast." (from the dj). Pp (4),[v]-x,(2),3-205,(9). 8vo, green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. McIlvaineA9a4. Originally publshed in 1907 by Cassell and Co., London. Jasen has re versed the order of names on the title page to put P.G. Wodehouse first. "Never before published in the United States, this early, autobiographical novel by P.G. Wodehouse aptly describes the perils of a writer's world in London circa 1900. The protagonistan author manquéattempts by any means necessary to establish himself in literary circles. But his subterfuges backfire, his amours come a cropper, and only an ingenious, beguiling denouement sav es his skin. A unique feature of the novel, which foreshadows the techniques of the mature Wodehouse, is his telling of the story from the perspectiveof many characters. Consequently, devoted fans of Plum now have an opportu nity to glimpse a genius stretching, nay perfecting, his narrative powers."(from the dj). Very good in nicked but unclipped dustjacket. 35.00

Pp (4),[v]-vi,(2),[3]-266. A few maps and illustrations in the text. 8vo, art-illustrated paper-covered boards. "Thisbook focuses on the ways in which military technology, political and socia l trends, and shifting frontiers shaped the emergence of new forms of public authority and civic life as embodied in the 'wall', an image at once intensely physical and deeply symbolic. It traces the evolution of towns acrossmuch of what is today France from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth centur y when the walls began to come down, opening up new, ultimately revolutionary possibilities for urban life. This long-term perspective on town fortifications - how they were built, the contests to control them, and how they shaped the lives of people both inside and outside them- in the end tell us much about the making of France." - from rear cover. Thomas Kennerly Wolfe Jr. (b. March 2, 1930, Richmond, Virginia – d. May 14, 2018, New York City) was an American author and journalist widely known for his association with New Journalism, a style of news writing and journalism developed in the 1960s and 1970s that incorporated literary techniques.

"Today everyone (tout le monde) is looking at the past fifty years of American architecture with a new pair of eyes. As Tom Wolfe writes in his introduction to From Bauhaus to Our House,"O Beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, has there ever been another place on earth where so many people of wealth and power have paid for and put up with so much architecture they detested as within thy blessed borders today? . . . Every child goes to school in a building that looks like a duplicating-machine replacement-parts wholesale distribution warehouse . . . Every new $900,000 summer house in the north woods of Michigan or on the shore of Long Island has so many pipe railings, ramps, hob-tread metal spiral stairways, sheets of industrial plate glass, banks of tungsten-halogen lamps, and white cylindrical shapes, it looks like an insecticide refinery." And every building more than ten stories high is "a glass box." Even the architects themselves now use the term with a snigger.

The contradiction between this bare, spare, impersonal, and highly abstract architecture and the civilization it serves provides the setting of From Bauhaus to Our House. This has been the American century-just as the seventeenth century was the British century-the epoch in which a young giant achieves tremendous military and economic power and flexes its muscles, bursting with energy and exuberance and wallowing, in excess. And what architecture does America have to show for it? An architecture whose tenets prohibit every manifestation of exuberance, power, or even high spirits, as the height of bad taste.

[...] Once again Wolfe shows how social and intellectual fashions have determined aesthetic form in our time and how willingly the creators have abandoned personal vision and originality in order to work à la mode." (from the dj).

60553 WOLFE, Tom Bonfire of the Vanities. First Edition in dustjacket
Farrar, Straus & Giroux, New York, 1987,
WOLFE, Tom. The Bonfire of the Vanities. New York : Farrar Straus Giroux, (1987). First US Trade Edition. Pp (14),[3]-659,(1). 8vo [1560 x 240 mm], grey cloth spine lettered in silver and black, purple paper-covered boards with his signature in black. Thomas Kennerly Wolfe Jr. (b. March 2, 1930, Richmond, Virginia – d. May 14, 2018, ew York City) was an American author andjournalist widely known for his association with New Journalism, a style o f news writing and journalism developed in the 1960s and 1970s that incorporated literary techniques. "Sherman McCoy, the central figure of Tom Wolfe's first novel, is a young investment banker with a fourteen-room apartment in Manhattan. When he is involved in a freak accident in the Bronx, prosecutors, politicians, the press, the police, the clergy, and assorted hustlershigh and low close in on him, licking their chops and giving us a gargantu an helping of the human comedy of New York in the last years of the twentieth century, a city boiling over with racial and ethnic hostilities and burning with the itch to Grab It Now. Wolfe's gallery ranges from Wall Street, where people in their thirties feel like small-fry if they're not yet making a million per, to the real streets, where the aim is lower but the itch is just as virulent. We see this feverish landscape through the eyes of McCoy's wife and his mistress; the young prosecutor for whom the McCoy case would be he answer to a prayer; the ne'er-do-well British journalist who needssuch a case to save his career in America; the street-wise Irish lawyer wh o becomes McCoy's only ally; and Reverend Bacon of Harlem, a master manipulator of public opinion. Above all, we see what happens when the criminal justice system-gorged with "the chow," as the Bronx prosecutor calls the borough's usual black and Latin felons-considers the prospect of being banded aprime cut like Sherman McCoy of Park Avenue. The Bonfire of the Vanities i s a novel, but it is based on the same sort of detailed on-scene reporting as Wolfe's great nonfiction bestsellers, The Right Stuff, Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, and The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. And it is every bit as eye-opening in its achievements. 60555 WOLFE, Tom Painted Word. First Edition in dustjacket
Farrar Straus Giroux / FSG, New York, 1975,
WOLFE, Tom. The Painted Word. New York : Farrar, Straus & Giroux, (1975). First Printing. Pp (8),3-121,(1). Illustrated. 8vo. off-white cloth spine, blue pepr covered boards, gilt letering to spine. "The Painted Word charts the erratic course of the social history of Modern Art from its beginnings in revolution-a revolution against literary content in art-to its present state, in which it has become, quite unconsciously, a parody of itself, obsessedly devoted to the pronouncements of certain guru-critics, to the point of reductio ad absurdum, to the point where-turnabout being fair play-it hasbecome as literary, as academic, as mannered, as clubby, as the salon pain ting against which it first rebelled. Soon after Modern Art developed, it became fashionable. Society (le beau monde, Cultureburg) and art critics attached themselves to it like pilot fish; but then they grew, and grew, and grew, until-as Abstract Expressionism gave way to Pop, as Pop spawned Op, asOp fell before Minimal opposition, as what was Minimal became no more than Conceptual-Art began to serve fashion and theory. The shark vanished and l eft the pond to le beau monde and to the critics, custodians of the paintedWord. Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, Leo Steinberg-these are the big fish, Wolfe argues, not Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, or Jasper John s. The argument is utterly convincing . . . and wildly entertaining. Tom Wolfe is our premier social historian, and he is writing at the top of his form. Whether he is describing the Art Mating Ritual (in two parts, the Boho Dance and the Consummation) or taking the census of Cultureburg, he writes with an energy and irony all his own. His style has never been more dazzling, his wit has never been more keen. For everyone but his targets, the publication of The Painted Word is cause for celebration." (from the dj). "It was in the1960s and 1970s-those "purple decades"-that Tom Wolfe rose to fame as one of the late-twentieth-century pioneers of American literature. He became the foremost chronicler of the gaudiest period in American history, much of which is spread out before us in these selections from nine of his books. Wolfe's innovations in style, his feats as a reporter, and his insights into modern American life dominated a period of widespread experimentation in the writing of nonfiction. After the triumph in 1979 of The Right Stuff, his book on the Mercury astronauts, Wolfe received the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award for prose style; the American Book Award for nonfiction; and one of journalism's highest honors, the Columbia Journalism Award. Another long piece called "The Truest Sport: Jousting with Sam and Charlie" (also complete here) has become a classic work on aerial combat in Vietnam as experienced by the pilots themselves. His 1968 book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (two chapters of which appear in these pages), is recognized as the major book on the hippie movement of the 1960s." (from the dj). "A masterful biographer now offers a thrilling, definitive portrait of one of history's most legendary icons of adventure.

In 1860, sixteen-year-old Joshua Slocum escaped a hardscrabble childhood in Nova Scotia by signing on as an ordinary seaman to a merchant ship bound for Dublin. Despite having only a third-grade education, Slocum rose through the nautical ranks at a mercurial pace; just a decade later he was commander of his own ship. His subsequent journeys took him nearly everywhere: Liverpool, China, Japan, Cape Horn, the Dutch East Indies, Manila, Hong Kong, Saigon, Singapore, San Francisco, and Australia -- where he met and married his first wife, Virginia, who would sail along with him for the rest of her life, bearing and raising their children at sea. He commanded eight vessels and owned four, enduring hurricanes, shipwrecks, pirate attacks, cholera, smallpox, a mutiny, and the death of his wife and three of his children. Yet his ultimate adventure and crowning glory was still to come.

In 1895 Slocum set sail from Gloucester, Massachusetts -- by himself -- in the Spray, a small sloop of thirty-seven feet. More than three years and forty-six thousand miles later, he became the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo, a feat that wouldn't be replicated until 1925. His account of that voyage, 'Sailing Alone Around the World', soon made him internationally famous. He met President Theodore Roosevelt on several occasions and became a presence on the lecture circuit, selling his sea-saga books whenever and wherever he could. But scandal soon followed, and a decade later, with his finances failing, he set off alone once more - and was never seen again.

Geoffrey Wolff captures this singular life and its flamboyant times - from the Golden Age of Sail to a shockingly different new century - in vivid, fascinating detail." - from the dustjacket.

William Wolkovich-Valkavicius, W. Groton, MA, 1981,
WOLKOVICH-VALKAVICIUS, William. Immigrants and Yankees in Nashoba Valley, Massachusetts : Interethnic and Interreligious Conflict and Accommodation ofIrish, French-Canadians, Poles, Lithuanians and Italians. (W. Groton, MA : Published by William Wolkovich-Valkavicius, 1981). First Printing. Pp (18) ,xv-xix,(1),[1]-240,(2). Illustrated. Map. 8vo, grey cloth, maroon lettering to spine. "Immigrants and Yankees records the fate of Irish, French-Canadians, Poles, Lithuanians, and Italians who infiltrated an old colonial bastion of Massachusetts from the 1840s. Here is a narrative about two highly unlike cultures in collision and adjustment. William Wolkovich describes theinter ethnic and inter religious dynamics of major immigrating groups weav ing into the fabric of Groton, Ayer, Shirley, Littleton, Pepperell, Townsend, and Ashby from 1845 to 1945. The author reviews the Puritan mind, which so colored the behavior of succeeding generations, and faithfully documentsthe attitude toward immigrants, in particular the Catholic newcomers who b ore a culture quite different from the heritage of the prevailing host society. Each vignette is richly annotated by contemporary newspaper accounts, which provides a fascinating insight into the "shirt-sleeve" life of the emunder scrutiny. The book is divided into three main parts. Part One afford s an intimate view of the Protestant milieu in the Nashoba Valley. These pages detail instances of human frailty, inconsistency, and deviation from the original Puritan ideals and mores and reveal how the Yankees sought to uphold those tenets in their practical daily living. Part Two identifies the conflict between foreigners and Anglo-Americans. It explores the origin of the incoming Catholics, their settlements and labors, and examines the prejudice they met because of their ethnicity. What's more, it analyzes the newcomers as they tried to practice their faith in inhospitable surroundings and chronicles their troubles as they sought to establish Catholic parishes.Part Three portrays the accommodation. It expresses, through a litany of e pisodes, the many ways in which Protestants and Catholics attempted to cooperate and the eventual easing of tensions between them. It also sets down some of the problems and adjustments that the immigrants came up against within their own households and the diocese of Boston. A series of appendixes on the seven Catholic parishes in the Valley, and a full bibliography complete this volume." (from the dj). Contents : Outline; Introduction. Australian Government Publishing Service, Canberra, 1989,
WOMEN'S BUREAU, Department of Employment, Education and Training. New Brooms: Restructuring and Training Issues for Women in the Service Sector. Foreword by Robyn MCKAY. Canberra: Australian Government Publishing Service, (1989). Pp. [i]-vii,(1),[1]-296. 8vo, illustrated maroon card covers. "The structural changes taking place in service secotor employment call for a considered and constructive response from a number of industry players with independent and complementary roles. This monograph is intended to provide information to unions, employers, and government bodies at all levels who have an interest in the service sector. More broadly, the monograph is intended to be of assistance to women. We have called it New Brooms because it is about the impact of new technology and new forms of work organisation on traditionally female employment. But it goes further - it is also about steps which have to be taken to make new technology and new forms of work organisation work for rather than against women. New Brooms is the beginning of women's gaining power over what they do in their paid work. The industries addressed in the monograph are banking, insurance and computing; retail; hospitality; and the come and community care sub-sector of community services."-from the foreword.
