"It has been a peculiar pleasure to spend these past months recalling scenes and events connected with the St. John River. I have realized anew how much tne river is a part of me and how fortunate I am to have known it in the bygone era of the canoe, tne river steamer, and the log drive. Although one kind friend thought the previous book, The Saint John River, published by McClleand and Stewart in 1949, "just perfect", and although Hugh Maclennan made very considerable use of it for his cnapier on the St. John Riiver, I wasnot satisfied with it and have rewritten the entire book. Much has happene d on the river meanwhile. Also, in connection with my researches on the Loyalists and on the Steeves tamiiy history and genealogy, I have delved further into various types of records and have visited and revisited many parts of the river. I have made a special effort to get the book out in 1966 for those who wish, as part of the Centennial celebration, to extend their acquaintance with Canada. After pubiication of the previous book, a comment I particularly valued came from British Columbia: 'Thank you for making New Brunswick history come alive.' I hope this book will be able to make both thehistory and geography of New Brunswick come alive." - author's note. Minor bump to tail of spine, name, else vg. 30.00

WRIGHT, Esther Clark. The Saint John River. Toronto : McClelland & Stewart,(1949). First Edition. Pp (4),v,(1),[1]-254,+ 12 pp.plates. 8vo, tan cloth , red lettering to spine. Laugher p.614, Spadoni & Donnelly 1373. Esther Isabelle Clark Wright, née Clark, CM (b. May 14, 1895, Fredericton – d. June 17, 1990). "An account of the river and its people by an author with intimate knowledge of both. All the fascinating New Brunswick place-names, Nauwigewauk and Nerepis, Washademoak and Tobique, Becaguimec and Oromocto, come into this story. The New Brunswick family names, Estey and Estabrooks, Sherwood and Ketchum, Scovil and Secord, Miles and Giberson, and many more are there. israel Perley wants a beaver hat and Gershom Clark buries his first wife. Henry Nase stops for a glass of buttermilk and John Baker raises the American flag. Pierre Thoma consults his God and Alexander Fraser builds a pulp mill. Salmon leap at Hartt's Island Pool and a moose races a car on Broad Road. Every part of New Brunswick comes into the picture, for the Saint John and its branches reach out in many directions, and go beyond the province, into Maine and Quebec. But the canvas is broader yet and includes NovaScotia, of which New Brunswick was once a county, New England, New York, N ew Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North and South Carolina, from which theearly settlers came. The Atlantic ocean is part of the picture, its tides heightened by the Bay of Fundy, and those maritime countries, France, England, Scotland, and Ireland, whose people came and made themselves at home along the Saint John. Why are Fredericton's older houses built close to the street? Why do the falls reverse? Why does Saint John look that way? Why do New Brunswickers talk about counties? To these and many other questions this book gives the answers." - from the dustjacket. Chapters : The Saint JohnRiver: The Mouth of the Saint John; A City is Born; The City of the Loyali sts; The Ships of Saint John; The City and the River; The Kennebecasis; Up and Down the Kennebecasis; The River Leaves the City; The Belleisle; Queen's County; Gagetown and Its Realm; Washademoak and Grand Lake; Maugherville and Burton; St.Ann's Point; Fredericton's Rivers; The Elm and the Maple; The Blocks; Fredericton to Woodstock; The Garden of the Province; The Rival Kings; New Brunswick's half. "Between July and September, 1940, Britain evacua ted 2,664 children so that they might escape the horrors of war and a threat of invasion by German forces. Bombing had already begun and English cities were feeling the stress of nightly raids. Canada took a total of 1,532 ofthe evacuated children, Nova Scotia 149 of these. They all have vivid memo ries of crossing the Atlantic, witnessing ships being torpedoed and some being sunk. There is also the excitement of landing in Halifax and their first impressions of Nova Scotia. All came through the Port of Halifax and Pier21. They were selected by families from Yarmouth to Sydney. Most of them s tayed for five years but after returning to England, some came back to NovaScotia, to be with their host families, to further their education or to p ursue a career. A Karl Alberg Mystery.
"In the seaside village of Sechelt, Emma O’Brea prepares a dinner to celebrate six years of marriage: a union she has polished to gleaming perfection, along with her showcase home. The next morning her husband leaves for work, never to return. At the same time, in nearby Vancouver, a simple-minded stock boy named Eddie Addison defends his tattered pride against the unwitting slights of a college girl, unleashing his rage in an act that will have far-reaching consequences. RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg is facing his own losses. As he copes with the recent death of his father, his concerns about his elderly mother, and his own inexorable slide into middle age, he must make a decision about where his relationship with Cassandra Mitchell, his lover of eight years, is headed. Restless and in desperate need of distraction, Alberg uses his bereavement leave to probe the disappearance of Charlie O’Brea. As Alberg deals with Charlie O’Brea’s vanishing act, Eddie Addison’s very messy life spills over into Sechelt. It is Emma O’Brea who will bring both cases to a chilling conclusions several lives converge in an explosive climax of shocking, unforgettabl e violence." (from the dj).
