"The despatches of Sir Charles Hardy comence in New York, 3rd May 1757, and continue until the Spring of 1758. They cover the build-upof the fleet and of the army from New England and Nova Scotia, detailed de scriptions of ships and their complements and the general conditions prevailing at the time. [...] The despatches of Vice-Admiral Frances Holburne commence 29 September 1757, and continue to the end of the year. In July 1757,Vice-Admiral Holburne arrived in Halifax and took over naval command. Bu t he first week in August the expedition was ready but intelligence from a captured vessel indicated that Louisbourg has a garrison of over 7000 troops,and that the harbour was protected by 18 ships of the line and 5 frigates.
