An observatory was erected at Castle Frederick in central Nova Scotia in 1765, initially to be used as a station for checking survey equipment. A few years later it was equipped with more specialised instruments and is now considered to possibly have been one of the earliest, optically equipped astronomicval observatories in the Western Hemisphere.
