Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1969,
GARVIE, A.F. Aeschylus' Supplices : Play and Trilogy . Cambridge: at the University Press, 1969. First Printing. Pp. [i]-vii,(1),1-279,(1). 8vo, browncloth with gilt lettered black title block to spine, top edge dyed brown. A critical survey on the Supplices, traditionally dubbed as an "immature work of Aeschylus's youth" traditionally. Garvie, through the thorough examination of fragments of Aeschylus's surviving writings (Pap.Oxy 2256, fragment 3), espouses the theory that the surviving Supplices are actually part ofa trilogy, and was actually compiled later in his career, likely to be chr onologically placed between Septem and the Oresteia, as a result of examining Aeschylus's stylistic tendencies, and the structure of the work and fragments as a whole. He concludes his survey by determining to what extent thehypothetical "lost plays" can be reconstructed, given the consistencies be tween the surviving fragments and the Supplices.
