The answer is partly personal in that Lismer has been for some years a valued friend of mine, although we have been and still are lively disputants on many points. The larger reason is that I have frankly felt Lismer to be, in at least one sense, the most significant of the Group - in the very sense, indeed, in which he is popularly supposed to be weakest:namely that he has been a great teacher as well as one of Canada's most memorable painters. To me the nationalist evangel of Lismer, both as teacher and missioner in Canadianart, makes him a pre-eminent figure in the cultural self-discovery of Cana da which has become so notable following the Second World War. For forty years, lecturing and teaching in all parts of Canada and under incredibly varied an at times exhausting conditions, Lismer has been the prick anda goad of the Canadians, urging in and out of season the need to discover the essence ot the Canadian spirit and to translate it in original terms. " - from McLeish's foreword. John Alexander Buchanan McLeish. (b. Calgary, Alberta, December 6, 1913 - d. Dec. 6, 1995). Owner's name and inkstamp, else very good in dustjacket. 50.00
