He became a protegé of Voltaire a nd won fame in Paris; stole two of the loves of the Maréchal de Saxe; was imprisoned in the Bastille for refusing to betray the author of a lampoon; held several governmental appointments; fought the censorship of the Sorbonne, and won; wrote for the Encyclopaedists; was elected a member of the French Academy; wasthe friend of Madame de Pompadour, Madame de Tencin, Madame Geoffrin; and made an extremely happy marriage when he was fifty.
