1 MORRIS, Paul C. STACKPOLE, Edouard A., foreword. American Sailing Coasters of the North Atlantic. 1st in dj.
1973,
MORRIS, Paul C. American Sailing Coasters of the North Atlantic; with a foreword by Edouard A. Stackpole. Chardon, Ohio: Bloch and Osborn, (1973). First Edition. Pp 224. Illustrated, folding plan at rear. 4to, blue cloth. A seminal work on the history of the American coastwise trade. This lively, popular narrative examines the origins of the trade in the pre-Revolutionary period, and follows its trajectory through to its demise in the twentieth century. There are sections on vessel construction, on typical owners, on crews and on representative trades. The book is especially strong in its treatment of late- developed four-, five-, six- and seven-masted schooners. In addition to the line drawings interspersed throughout the text, there is a photographic section showing vessels ranging from pretty Nova Scotian two-masters to the awful spectacle of the Thomas W. Lawson in ballast, under sail. Includes a glossary, bibliography, and index. Vg in dj. 75.00
