Essays in the appendices of this early Deaf Culture conference include: Mrs. St. John (Louisa M.J.) Ackers's "Mental Development of theDeaf under the 'German' System"; Susanna E. Hull's "My Experiences of Vari ous Methods of Educating the Deaf-Born"; Arthur A. Kinsey's "On the Education of the Deaf"; B. St. J. Ackers's "Advantages to the Deaf of the 'German'System in After Life"; E. Symes Thompson's "On the Health of Deaf-Mutes"; David Buxton's "Speech and Lip-Reading for the Deaf: A Teacher's Testimony to the 'German' System. Ex-libris James Scott Hutton, who for many years was the principal at the Halifax Institute for the Deaf and Dumb, "a private,non-denominational school administered by a prestigious board of Protestan t men and partially funded by the Nova Scotia government. Except for a brief term as principal of a similar institution in Belfast (Northern Ireland) from 1878 to 1882, Hutton would remain in Halifax until his death in 1891."- from Janet Guildford's Dictionary of Canadian Biography entry for Hutton . This volume was purchased by Hutton in 1881, during that short tenure in Belfast. Front inner hinge cracked, lightly rubbed, nicked near head of spine, numerous instances of pencilled underlining and marginalia, as well as occasional smudging, overexuberant cutting job to many of advertising leaves at rear, else vg.
