With a description of St.John's circa 1776 (pp.44-46) with remarksearly marrying, the 'tedious fog", mosquitos, and the debauched and violent Irish. (1755-1825) born in Currie and died in nearby Edinburgh. His narrative was first published in 1822 in Edinburgh by Blackwood and Cadell, and edited by John Howell (1788-1865/6). Laing has provided very useful background to the book and its writer in this edition. "Since a date in the vicinity of 1800, all books have undergone an increasing risk of being lost in the piling up of their fellows." -Laing on p.5. Sub-title continued : together with copious Notes & Comments on Ships, the Officers and Shipmates with whom hw served, the Customs and Traditions of the Sea and of the Inhabitants of Distant Lands both Savage and Civilized, their Religions, Culture, & Industries, etc., etc., etc. ...
